Book Labor and Aesthetics in European Contemporary Dance

Download or read book Labor and Aesthetics in European Contemporary Dance written by Annelies Van Assche and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-06-13 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This transdisciplinary study scientifically reports the way the established contemporary dance sector in Europe operates from a micro-perspective. It provides a dance scholarly and sociological interpretation of its mechanisms by coupling qualitative data (interview material, observations, logbooks, and dance performances) to theoretical insights. The book uncovers the sometimes contradicting mechanisms related to the precarious project-oriented labor and art market that determine the working and living conditions of contemporary dance artists in Europe’s dance capitals Brussels and Berlin. In addition, it examines how these working and living conditions affect the work process and outcome. From a sociological perspective, the book engages with the relevant contemporary social issue of precarity and this within the much-at-risk professional group of contemporary dance artists. In this regard, the research brings novelty within the subject area, particularly by employing a unique methodological approach. Although the research is initially set up in a specific geographical context and within a specific research population, the book offers insights into issues that affect our neoliberal society at large. The research findings show potential to make a relevant contribution with regards to precarity within dance studies and performance studies, but also labor studies and cultural sociology.

Book Essential Guide to Calving

Download or read book Essential Guide to Calving written by Heather Smith Thomas and published by Storey Publishing. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every cattle farmer — from the keeper of a family milk cow to the rancher overseeing a large herd — will gain confidence and control by becoming more knowledgeable about calving. Healthy pregnancies, safe births, and thriving calves are critical to every cattle operation, and in remote farm locations, the veterinarian is not always readily available. Even if the vet is nearby, the farm's finances will be healthier if the farmer can oversee most of the calving process. Heather Smith Thomas, an expert on livestock with decades of firsthand experience, covers every routine situation likely to arise before, during, and after calving. And when the calving process is out of the ordinary, Thomas guides the farmer through pregnancy problems, difficult deliveries, recognizing when to call in a vet, and postpartum complications. Her thorough coverage of what to expect in every situation gives farmers the knowledge they need to care personally for their cows. The second half of the book is dedicated to ensuring that every calf gets off to a healthy start. Thomas helps farmers work with cows reluctant to nurse, substitute mothers, and frail calves. A complete chapter on calfhood illnesses explains warning signs and offers tips on prevention and treatment. As people return to farming in growing numbers, the demand for safe, humane livestock knowledge continues to increase. Farmers will turn to this reliable volume again and again as they welcome each new calf.

Book Living Arts Detroit Wolf Trap

Download or read book Living Arts Detroit Wolf Trap written by Roberta Lucas and published by Front Edge Publishing. This book was released on 2016-12-15 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is full of true stories about performing artists at Living Arts, a small nonprofit in Detroit, Michigan, who formed a national affiliate of the Wolf Trap Institute for Early Learning through the Arts. That’s the early childhood outreach of the Wolf Trap Foundation, which is part of the world-renowned Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts. In Detroit, this team of artists—dancers, actors, musicians, storytellers, puppeteers and more—developed training experiences with Wolf Trap’s guidance. Now, these teaching artists are bringing lessons to children aged 3 months to 5 years, many of them in low-income neighborhoods with few other opportunities to experience the arts. The Wolf Trap teaching artists also are training classroom teachers and opening doors for family involvement workshops as well. The stories in this book capture the excitement of those interactions. As you will learn in these pages, research is stacking up to demonstrate the dramatic contribution arts education can make in early childhood development—as well as specific skills in STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) subjects. In these pages, you will meet all 12 of the 2016 teaching artists at Living Arts’ Detroit Wolf Trap affiliate. Each tells an inspiring—and often surprising—story about interactions with children and adults. By the end of the book, readers will have learned lots of creative ideas from these professionals. Readers also are left with further opportunities. The book includes videos of the artists at work, tips for establishing or expanding your own nonprofit and ways to connect with this Wolf Trap program. The book is intended for individual reading or group discussion with friends, parents, educators and community leaders anywhere across the U.S.

Book An Unsuspecting Trap

    Book Details:
  • Author : George E. Buttner
  • Publisher : Tate Publishing
  • Release : 2007-07
  • ISBN : 1602472580
  • Pages : 344 pages

Download or read book An Unsuspecting Trap written by George E. Buttner and published by Tate Publishing. This book was released on 2007-07 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "An Unsuspecting Trap" is a compelling and candid account of the author's struggles with alcoholism and his exploration of the events that led him down a path of self-destruction. At his mother's funeral, George flashes back to the abuse, abandonment, and early frustrations that impoverished his personal growth and kept him imprisoned by his past for most of his adult life. The disparagement and lack of guidance that characterized his early years led to his truancy, low self-worth, a dramatic near-death experience in the Navy, and a long and agonizing bout with alcoholism. However, this story is not about one child being battered or even the drunkenness that followed, but rather the human heart. Not knowing why, but knowing just the same, it is about a child's resourceful spirit searching for its place in the sun. It is about freeing whatever is good from the wreckage of my broken dreams. Wishing for some of them to come true, it is about a chance at having a hopeful future, of being restored to full humanity, and yes, most of all, it is about the necessary conviction that in sharing these things with others, life will have peaceful promise for our children in the shrinking fast changing world we know today.

Book Break and Flow

  • Author : Charlie D. Hankin
  • Publisher : University of Virginia Press
  • Release : 2023-07-26
  • ISBN : 0813949831
  • Pages : 377 pages

Download or read book Break and Flow written by Charlie D. Hankin and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2023-07-26 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hip hop is a global form of creative expression. In Cuba, Brazil, and Haiti, rappers refuse the boundaries of hip hop’s US genesis, claiming the art form as a means to empower themselves and their communities in the face of postcolonial racial and class violence. Despite the geographic and linguistic borders that separate these artists, Charlie Hankin finds in their music and lyrics a common understanding of hip hop’s capacity to intervene in the public sphere and a shared poetics of neighborhood, nation, and transatlantic yearnings. Situated at the critical intersection of sound studies and Afro-diasporic poetics, Break and Flow draws on years of ethnographic fieldwork and collaboration, as well as an archive of hundreds of songs by more than sixty hip hop artists. Hankin illuminates how new media is used to produce and distribute knowledge in the Global South, refining our understanding of poetry and popular music at the turn of the millennium.
