Book Introduction to the Numerical Modeling of Groundwater and Geothermal Systems

Download or read book Introduction to the Numerical Modeling of Groundwater and Geothermal Systems written by Jochen Bundschuh and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2010-07-05 with total page 1373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an introduction to the scientific fundamentals of groundwater and geothermal systems. In a simple and didactic manner the different water and energy problems existing in deformable porous rocks are explained as well as the corresponding theories and the mathematical and numerical tools that lead to modeling and solving them. This approach provides the reader with a thorough understanding of the basic physical laws of thermoporoelastic rocks, the partial differential equations representing these laws and the principal numerical methods, which allow finding approximate solutions of the corresponding mathematical models. The book also presents the form in which specific useful models can be generated and solved. The text is introductory in the sense that it explains basic themes of the systems mentioned in three areas: engineering, physics and mathematics. All the laws and equations introduced in this book are formulated carefully based on fundamental physical principles. This way, the reader will understand the key importance of mathematics applied to all the subjects. Simple models are emphasized and solved with numerous examples. For more sophisticated and advanced models the numerical techniques are described and developed carefully. This book will serve as a synoptic compendium of the fundamentals of fluid, solute and heat transport, applicable to all types of subsurface systems, ranging from shallow aquifers down to deep geothermal reservoirs. The book will prove to be a useful textbook to senior undergraduate and graduate students, postgraduates, professional geologists and geophysicists, engineers, mathematicians and others working in the vital areas of groundwater and geothermal resources.

Book Reservoirs for Irrigation Water Power and Domestic Water Supply

Download or read book Reservoirs for Irrigation Water Power and Domestic Water Supply written by James Dix Schuyler and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-27 with total page 648 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reservoirs for Irrigation, Water-Power and Domestic Water-Supply: With an Account of Various Types of Dams and the Methods, Plans and Cost of Their Construction The kindly reception given to the first edition of this book, which appeared in 1901, and which has been in sufficient demand to necessitate a return of the forms to the press several times to supply the unanticipated call for it, has been so flattering to the author that he has been encouraged to accept the urgent advice of his publishers and many friends among the engineering profession, and attempt such a revision of the work as will bring it more nearly up to date. In the past ten or twelve years, since the first compilation of data on the construction of dams in western America was undertaken, the world in general appears to have entered upon a new era of dam and reservoir creation, and there has been such a remarkable degree of activity displayed in the conservation and utilization of water, that it may be quite reasonable to state that more dams have been built in the decade that has just passed than during any fifty years of previous history. This is true not only of the United States but also of Europe and other countries. The present appears to be an age of dam construction, and there has developed an eager demand for information regarding the actual works accomplished, their dimensions, character, plan, materials, methods of construction and cost. The author has been gratified to find his book in the hands of engineers in every part of the globe he has visited, which may be accepted as an attestation of the fact that there is a wide field for such a work. He has therefore felt it to be a duty to make it more complete, and more worthy of the interest taken in it. Much new matter has been added and some of the old has been taken out as obsolete and of little present value. The chapter on Hydraulic-fill Dams has been greatly extended by descriptions of later constructions, and two new chapters have been added, descriptive of reinforced concrete dams, the latest claimant to public attention, and of structural steel dams, which have increased in numbers and size. Book Hydrological Dimensioning and Operation of Reservoirs

Download or read book Hydrological Dimensioning and Operation of Reservoirs written by I.V. Nagy and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Storage reservoirs represent one of the most effective tools for eliminating, or at least for minimizing, discrepancies in the time and space variations of water resources distribution and requirements. In fact, the different - often contradictory - and increasing demands on water resources utilization and control usually can be fulfilled only by building multi-purpose reservoir systems. In this way, the available water resources can be exploited and/or managed in a more rational way. Typically, the construction of a dam across a river valley causes water to accumulate in a reservoir behind the dam; the volume of water accumulated in the reservoir will depend, in part, on the dimensions of the dam. The size of the dam will normally affect the capital expenditure in a very significant way. Indeed the construction of large water resource control systems - such as dams - generally involves rather huge manpower and material outlays. Consequently, the elaboration of effectual methods of approach that can be used in establishing the optimal reservoir parameters is of great practical significance. For instance, in the design and operation oflarge multi-reservoir systems, simple simulation and/or optimization models that can identify potentially cost effective and efficient system design are highly desirable. But it should be recognized that the problem of finding optimal capacities for multi-reservoir systems often becomes computationally complex because of the large number of feasible configurations that usually need to be analyzed.

Book Extending the Life of Reservoirs

Download or read book Extending the Life of Reservoirs written by George W. Annandale and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2016-09-29 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by two of the world’s leading experts on sediment management, 'Extending the Life of Reservoirs' provides guidance on adopting sediment management practices for hydropower and water supply dam projects. It explains how ensuring long-term resilience of critical infrastructure requires early and constant attention to reservoir sedimentation processes, which can reduce the storage capacity of reservoirs and damage hydro mechanical equipment. The report provides concrete guidance on safeguarding against these effects and preserving the many important services of hydropower and dam projects, including water supply, irrigation, and renewable electricity. In particular, it stresses the importance of integrating sediment management into the early planning phases of projects. 'Extending the Life of Reservoirs' is designed to assist those evaluating dam and hydropower proposals. While for the primary audience includes policy makers, lending agencies, and general practitioners, the level of detail provided in the report should appeal to a wide array of stakeholder groups. The content is neither overly technical nor overly simplistic, and aims to provide practical and useful information. Importantly, this report provides a new perspective on the importance of sediment management that is not found in prior work. It stresses the value of sediment management measures as a robust adaptation measure to support sustainable hydropower. The techniques described in the report make sense regardless of future climate changes, but in many cases have even more value when uncertainty over future hydrological patterns is taken into account.

Book Hydraulic Engineering of Dams

Download or read book Hydraulic Engineering of Dams written by Willi H. Hager and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-11-05 with total page 1081 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hydraulic engineering of dams and their appurtenant structures counts among the essential tasks to successfully design safe water-retaining reservoirs for hydroelectric power generation, flood retention, and irrigation and water supply demands. In view of climate change, especially dams and reservoirs, among other water infrastructure, will and have to play an even more important role than in the past as part of necessary mitigation and adaptation measures to satisfy vital needs in water supply, renewable energy and food worldwide as expressed in the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations. This book deals with the major hydraulic aspects of dam engineering considering recent developments in research and construction, namely overflow, conveyance and dissipations structures of spillways, river diversion facilities during construction, bottom and low-level outlets as well as intake structures. Furthermore, the book covers reservoir sedimentation, impulse waves and dambreak waves, which are relevant topics in view of sustainable and safe operation of reservoirs. The book is richly illustrated with photographs, highlighting the various appurtenant structures of dams addressed in the book chapters, as well as figures and diagrams showing important relations among the governing parameters of a certain phenomenon. An extensive literature review along with an updated bibliography complete this book.
