Book Characterization of Fatigue Damage in a Metal Matrix Composite SCS 6 TI 15 3 at Elevated Temperature

Download or read book Characterization of Fatigue Damage in a Metal Matrix Composite SCS 6 TI 15 3 at Elevated Temperature written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fatigue characteristics of a unidirectional titanium based metal matrix composite site (MMC) were investigated at elevated temperature (427 deg C). A hybrid strain controlled loading made was used to subject the 0 deg and 90 deg laminas to fatigue. Along with the fatigue tests, microscopy and analytical modeling were also conducted. This combination of activities led to defining the initiation and progression of damage and deformation in the MMC. When loading was parallel to the fiber direction, the fatigue behavior was initially dominated by creep deformation of the matrix. Then, depending on the maximum strain, specimen failure was the result either fiber fractures or matrix cracking. In contrast, when loading was perpendicular to the fiber direction, the fatigue response was first dominated by the initiation of fiber-matrix interface damage. Then, if the maximum strain was above .35%, the dominant damage mechanism was matrix cracking. Below this strain level, the damage was a mixture of matrix microcracks and the progression of fiber-matrix interface damage. The analysis for this fiber orientation included unique methods to model the interface damage. This hybrid approach involving experiments, microscopy, and analytical modeling provided better understanding of the fatigue behavior of the MCC.

Book Investigation of Damage Mechanisms in A Cross Ply Metal Matrix Composite Under Thermo Mechanical Loading

Download or read book Investigation of Damage Mechanisms in A Cross Ply Metal Matrix Composite Under Thermo Mechanical Loading written by Joel J. Schubbe and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metal matrix composites (MMCs) are rapidly becoming strong candidates for high temperature and high stiffness structural applications such as the Advanced Tactical Fighter (ATF). This study systematically investigated the failure modes and associated damage in a cross-ply, (0/90)2s SCS6/Ti-15-3 metal matrix composite under in-phase and out-of-phase thermomechanic fatigue. Initiation and progression of fatigue damage were recorded and correlated to changes in Young's Modulus of the composite material. Experimental results show an internal stabilization of reaction zone size but degradation and separation from constituent materials under extended cyclic thermal loading. Critical to damage were transverse cracks initiating in the 90 degrees plies, growing and coalescing from fiber/matrix interfaces internal to the specimen, progressing outward through the 0 degree plies before failure. Maximum mechanical strain at failure was determined to be approximately 0.0075 mm/mm. A correlation was made relating maximum matrix stress to failure life, resulting in a fatigue threshold limit of 280 MPa. An attempt was made to correlate the degradation in Young's Modulus (Damage=1-E/Eo) with the applied life cycles from different TMF tests.

Book Evolution of Notch Tip Damage in Metal Matrix Composites During Static Loading

Download or read book Evolution of Notch Tip Damage in Metal Matrix Composites During Static Loading written by JG. Bakuckas and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The evolution of notch-tip damage during static loading in center-notched unidirectional boron/aluminum and silicon carbide/titanium composites was characterized through a two-prong investigation involving experiments and analysis. The effects of heat treatment on the failure process in boron/aluminum were addressed. In the experimental phase, the notch-tip damage initiation and progression was monitored and recorded in real time through a high-magnification (x 150) closed-circuit television system, acoustic emission, and load-deformation responses. Fracture surface morphologies were examined via a scanning electron microscope in order to identify the microfailure mechanisms.

Book An Advanced Test Technique to Quantify Thermomechanical Fatigue Damage Accumulation in Composite Materials

Download or read book An Advanced Test Technique to Quantify Thermomechanical Fatigue Damage Accumulation in Composite Materials written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-08-10 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A mechanical test technique was developed to assist in quantifying the accumulation of damage in composite materials during thermomechanical fatigue (TMF) cycling. This was accomplished by incorporating definitive elastic mechanical property measurements into an ongoing load-controlled TMF test without disturbing the test specimen or significantly altering the test conditions. The technique allows two fundamental composite properties consisting of the isothermal elastic static moduli and the macroscopic coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) to be measured and collected as functions of the TMF cycles. The specific implementation was incorporated into the commonly employed idealized in-phase and out-of-phase TMF cycles. However, the techniques discussed could be easily implemented into any form of load-controlled TMF mission cycle. By quantifying the degradations of these properties, tremendous insights are gained concerning the progression of macroscopic composite damage and often times the progression of damage within a given constituent. This information should also be useful for the characterization and essential for the verification of analytical damage modeling methodologies. Several examples utilizing this test technique are given for three different fiber lay-ups of titanium metal matrix composites. Castelli, Michael G.
