Download or read book Daily Mental Practice written by William Chandon and published by . This book was released on 2019-09-26 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most athletes understand the need for physical practice. Reasonable athletes wouldn't expect to improve their performances without the right kinds of consistent practice. However, the idea of mental practice is much less understood and effectively practiced. Even if athletes are self-aware enough to know that they are limiting or sabotaging their performances, they often don't know how to fix the problem. If they knew how to fix themselves, they would. This book gives you a powerful way of working on your mental approach to athletic performance. The essence of a strong mental approach or" mental game" is when we correctly manage our thinking, emotions , and physical body in ways that work the best for us as individuals. We do that by regularly working on improving our mental game. We mentally practice. Now you have a simple and effective way of mentally practicing. You have a way of discovering and correcting the ways in which you are limiting or sabotaging yourself. You can start to mentally practice in as little as 15 minutes per day. This book is for athletes who are serious about fulfilling their potential. Development of a strong mental game takes practice and persistence. Development of a strong mental game is similar in scope to the development of physical skills in sports. Think of this book as working out. You're working out your mind and training yourself to perform your best. This book contains individual mental practices which are organized by the calendar. Each month has a unique topic. Each day has a unique mental practice. You can use the mental practices according to their date or you can use them by topic and what applies to you right now. The chapter topics are: January: Being in the Zone February: Vision Quest March: Being Mentally Tough April: Being Confident May: Being a Champion June: Welcoming Challenges July: Training Well August: Being a Free Spirit September: Being Healthy October: Developing August: November: Leading December: Planning for Success The goals of mental practice are to learn how to perform consistently at your highest levels. To do that you'll learn how to use "power thoughts" in your daily mental practices. A power thought is a short sentence that we use to engage our imagination and help us focus as we mentally practice, physically practice and as we compete. See how good you can be.

Download or read book Healthy lives healthy people written by Great Britain: Department of Health and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2010-11-30 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Government recognises that many lifestyle-driven health problems are at alarming levels: obesity; high rates of sexually transmitted infections; a relatively large population of drug users; rising levels of harm from alcohol; 80,000 deaths a year from smoking; poor mental health; health inequalities between rich and poor. This white paper outlines the Government's proposals to protect the population from serious health threats; help people live longer, healthier and more fulfilling lives; and improve the health of the poorest. It aims to empower individuals to make healthy choices and give communities and local government the freedom, responsibility and funding to innovate and develop ways of improving public health in their area. The paper responds to Sir Michael Marmot's strategic review of health inequalities in England post 2010 - "Fair society, healthy lives" (available at http://www.marmotreview.org/AssetLibrary/pdfs/Reports/FairSocietyHealthyLives.pdf) and adopts its life course framework for tackling the wider social determinants of health. A new dedicated public health service - Public Health England - will be created to ensure excellence, expertise and responsiveness, particularly on health protection where a national response is vital. The paper gives a timetable showing how the proposals will be implemented and an annex sets out a vision of the role of the Director of Public Health. The Department is also publishing a fuller story on the health of England in "Our health and wellbeing today" (http://www.dh.gov.uk/prod_consum_dh/groups/dh_digitalassets/@dh/@en/@ps/documents/digitalasset/dh_122238.pdf), detailing the challenges and opportunities, and in 2011 will issue documents on major public health issues.

Book Mental Practice Clinical and Experimental Research in Imagery and Action Observation

Download or read book Mental Practice Clinical and Experimental Research in Imagery and Action Observation written by Magdalena Ietswaart and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2016-05-18 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is now strong evidence demonstrating that the brain simulates action and other functions. Such action simulation can be evoked through conscious mental rehearsal of movement or imagery, but also through passive action observation watching movements in others. Furthermore, there is evidence to suggest that mental rehearsal of movement, or mental practice, can produce improvements normally attributed to practising actual movements. It is currently assumed that such improvements are due to neural activation associated with action simulation. However the neuroscience of mental practice efficacy is still poorly understood. The aim of this research topic is to clarify the underlying mechanisms of mental practice, bringing evidence from cognitive neuroscience, experimental neuropsychology, sport and movement science, and clinical neurology. It also attempts to address confusion regarding the concepts of imagery and observation, which has hampered the progression of mental practice research both scientifically and applied. As well as reviews, theoretical, and position articles, this research topic includes original neuroimaging, experimental, and patient research addressing, among others, the following issues. Neuroimaging studies provide strong evidence for action simulation, but the link to behavioural change and functional outcome is weak. What is the evidence that mental practice efficacy is driven by neuroplasticity processes evoked by action simulation? This research topic includes contributions on neural correlates and behaviour with regards to imagery and action observation. Much of the mental practice efficacy evidence comes from longstanding research within sport science. However, what does mental practice entail in these contexts, and to what extent is it compatible with the cognitive neuroscience perspective of action simulation? This research topic will include contributions that consider both evidence and concepts with regards to imagery and action observation, in an attempt to build an interdisciplinary consensus on the nature and application of mental practice. Mental practice is perceived as a promising motor rehabilitation technique, but critically there is lack of clarity or consensus on what mental practice treatment should entail. It is also not clear what are the most appropriate outcomes to measure imagery ability and cognitive or behavioural change following mental practice. A further important issue that needs consideration as part of this research topic is dosage, as it is currently unclear how much mental practice is appropriate and whether this depends on patient variables such as age, cognitive functioning, motor function, or pathophysiology.

Book excerpt: World-renowned neuroscientist and author of Healthy Brain, Happy Life explains how to harness the power of anxiety into unexpected gifts. We are living in the age of anxiety, a situation that often makes us feel as if we are locked into an endless cycle of stress, sleeplessness, and worry. But what if we had a way to leverage our anxiety to help us solve problems and fortify our wellbeing? What if, instead of seeing anxiety as a curse, we could recognize it for the unique gift that it is? Dr. Wendy Suzuki has discovered a paradigm-shifting truth about anxiety: yes, it is uncomfortable, but it is also essential for our survival. In fact, anxiety is a key component of our ability to live optimally. Every emotion we experience has an evolutionary purpose, and anxiety is designed to draw our attention to vulnerability. If we simply approach it as something to avoid, get rid of, or dampen, we actually miss an opportunity to improve our lives. Listening to our anxieties from a place of curiosity, and without fear, can actually guide us onto a path that leads to joy. Drawing on her own intimate struggles and based on cutting-edge research, Dr. Suzuki has developed an inspiring guidebook for managing unwarranted anxiety and turning it into a powerful asset. In the tradition of Quiet and Thinking, Fast and Slow, Good Anxiety has the power to permanently change how we understand anxiety and, more importantly, how we can use it to improve our lives for the better.
