Download or read book After Eunuchs written by Howard Chiang and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2018-08-07 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For much of Chinese history, the eunuch stood out as an exceptional figure at the margins of gender categories. Amid the disintegration of the Qing Empire, men and women in China began to understand their differences in the language of modern science. In After Eunuchs, Howard Chiang traces the genealogy of sexual knowledge from the demise of eunuchism to the emergence of transsexuality, showing the centrality of new epistemic structures to the formation of Chinese modernity. From anticastration discourses in the late Qing era to sex-reassignment surgeries in Taiwan in the 1950s and queer movements in the 1980s and 1990s, After Eunuchs explores the ways the introduction of Western biomedical sciences transformed normative meanings of gender, sexuality, and the body in China. Chiang investigates how competing definitions of sex circulated in science, medicine, vernacular culture, and the periodical press, bringing to light a rich and vibrant discourse of sex change in the first half of the twentieth century. He focuses on the stories of gender and sexual minorities as well as a large supporting cast of doctors, scientists, philosophers, educators, reformers, journalists, and tabloid writers, as they debated the questions of political sovereignty, national belonging, cultural authenticity, scientific modernity, human difference, and the power and authority of truths about sex. Theoretically sophisticated and far-reaching, After Eunuchs is an innovative contribution to the history and philosophy of science and queer and Sinophone studies.

Download or read book Science for the Empire written by Hiromi Mizuno and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2008-11-12 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fascinating study examines the discourse of science in Japan from the 1920s to the 1940s in relation to nationalism and imperialism. How did Japan, with Shinto creation mythology at the absolute core of its national identity, come to promote the advancement of science and technology? Using what logic did wartime Japanese embrace both the rationality that denied and the nationalism that promoted this mythology? Focusing on three groups of science promoters—technocrats, Marxists, and popular science proponents—this work demonstrates how each group made sense of apparent contradictions by articulating its politics through different definitions of science and visions of a scientific Japan. The contested, complex political endeavor of talking about and promoting science produced what the author calls "scientific nationalism," a powerful current of nationalism that has been overlooked by scholars of Japan, nationalism, and modernity.

Book A Communicative Framework for Introductory Japanese Language Curricula

Download or read book A Communicative Framework for Introductory Japanese Language Curricula written by Washington State Japanese Language Curriculum Guidelines Committee and published by Natl Foreign Lg Resource Ctr. This book was released on 2000 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teaching Japanese as a second language is relatively new in the United States. The learning experience of the Japanese language learner is typically quite different from the learner of a European foreign language. It is also more challenging for the teacher, because the support and experience base for teaching Japanese is not nearly as rich or established as that for teaching Spanish or French. This book is an attempt by Japanese language teachers in Washington State to remedy this gap by specifying standards of instructional content and student performance that are comprehensive, explicit, and achievable. This book itself is not a curriculum--it is more of a framework. It should be read as a resource document--as a tool for building curricula that will allow students to achieve functional communication skills in Japanese. These guidelines are intended to assist individual teachers and professional associations throughout the United States in designing curricula. Chapter titles include the following: "Principles and Strategies"; "Topics, Functions, and Concepts"; "A Framework for Assessment"; "Authenticity, Context, and Culture"; "Written Language"; "On the Role of Explanation and Transcription"; and Teacher Preparation and Training." (Appendices cover topic areas, communicative functions, concepts, and contain a glossary.) (KFT)

History of Universities XXXIV/1 contains the customary mix of learned articles which makes this publication an indispensable tool for the historian of higher education. This volume offers a global history of research education in the ninteenth and twentieth centuries. This volume compares the training of scholars in different disciplines and countries across the globe in a century that laid the foundation for modern academia. The articles in this volume examine the different training "instruments" and methods for text-based disciplines (history and philology), laboratory sciences (such as chemistry), theoretical sciences (mathematics, for instance), fieldwork disciplines (linguistics and paleontology), and clinical science (medicine). They consider countries or societies in Europe, North America, South and East Asia, and Latin America, and analyze the roles of the state, nationalism and internationalism that shaped the institutions and policies for research education. Some of these articles are comparative, while the others are in-depth case studies of individual disciplines in specific countries at different stages of scientific developments. The introduction and conclusion of this volume bring together the important themes that run across the article and make necessary supplements to present a synthetic picture of the global history of research education.
