Book Chemical Exchange Between the Atmosphere and Polar Snow

Download or read book Chemical Exchange Between the Atmosphere and Polar Snow written by Eric W. Wolff and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 667 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polar ice cores have provided tremendous advances in our knowledge of past climate change. They also contain an archive of geochemical data, which can certainly delineate some of the forcing factors that govern climate change. However, our ability to interpret these data is severely curtailed by lack of knowledge of the processes governing the transfer of chemical species from the air to the snow. This book outlines the potential and problems of ice core chemistry and discusses the processes involved in air-snow transfer. It gives the state of current knowledge and an agenda for future research.

Book Global Changes in the Perspective of the Past

Download or read book Global Changes in the Perspective of the Past written by J. A. Eddy and published by . This book was released on 1993-10-19 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global Changes in the Perspective of the Past Edited by J. A. Eddy and H. Oeschger To identify the marks of humans on the planet we must know the natural background on which they were imposed. To determine their importance we need to know the range of variability of the natural system. To be able to predict the ultimate impact of human intervention on the Earth system it is necessary to understand how the system works, including the chemical interactions that link the living and nonliving parts. Such answers will come, in part if not completely, from what is known of past changes on the Earth, derived from the history and written records held in natural archives, e.g. tree rings, ice, ocean and lake sediments, coral deposits, and in the strata of soils and rock. On this basis, leading experts from the broad spectrum of science met in Berlin to discuss the use of paleoclimatic data for analyzing climatic processes and for modeling the future evolution of climate. It is hoped that this volume, which contains the background papers and summary group reports of the workshop, will illuminate some of the burning questions yet unanswered in the field of paleostudies and accelerate the pace of progress in this field. It should be of interest to climatologists, atmospheric scientists, biogeochemists, oceanographers, ecologists, glaciologists, and numerical modelers. Goal of this Dahlem Workshop: to discuss the use of paleoclimatic data for analyzing climatic processes and for modeling the future evolution of the climate.

Book Surface Processes and Landforms

Download or read book Surface Processes and Landforms written by Don J. Easterbrook and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book includes both basic material for students without a great deal of background in geology as well as more advanced topics. With coverage that reaches beyond the study of surface processes, it contains discussions on the evolution of landforms and interpretation of their origin. The Second Edition reflects the increasing relevance of geomorphology to environmental concerns and the additional emphasis this has placed on more applied aspects of the field. Also considered is the revolution of the discipline brought on by many rapidly-evolving tools, such as computers, sophisticated electronic measuring devices, lasers, mass spectrometers, new methods of dating landforms and deposits, and others.

Book Neurodegenerative Disorders

Download or read book Neurodegenerative Disorders written by D. L. Price and published by . This book was released on 1991-12-20 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dahlem Workshop Reports Life Sciences Research Report 51 Neurodegenerative Disorders Mechanisms and Prospects for Therapy Edited by D.L. Price, H. Thoenen and A.J. Aguayo Neurological disorders, particularly the neurodegenerative diseases involving the central nervous system, are characterized by dysfunction and death of specific populations of nerve cells. Cellular and molecular neurobiological strategies have begun to clarify the mechanisms of neuronal degeneration and have led to the design of new approaches to prevent cell degeneration, promote cell survival, and restore the functions of diseased nerve cells. This book provides new information concerning these processes. Background papers review exciting new developments concerning: (a) the mechanisms of neuronal degeneration caused by genetic factors, excitotoxins, and calcium; (b) the molecular pathology leading to abnormalities in Alzheimer’s disease and the spongiform encephalopathies or prion diseases; (c) the biological substrates of cell differentiation, axon guidance, and target recognition during development, repair, and recovery; and (d) the potential therapeutic efficacies of growth factors and grafted cells in re-establishing circuits essential for the restoration of function. The group discussions and background papers in this Dahlem Workshop Report communicate both the excitement and enthusiasm of the participants facing the scientific challenges that are part of this important area of neurobiological research. This volume will be of special interest to professionals in the fields of molecular/cell biology, genetics, neuroanatomy, neurochemistry, developmental neurobiology, and neuropathology as well as clinicians working in neurology and psychiatry. Goal of this Dahlem Workshop: to understand the molecular and cellular mechanisms of neurological disease and to explore new approaches to treatment.

Book Etiology of Dementia of Alzheimer s Type

Download or read book Etiology of Dementia of Alzheimer s Type written by A. S. Henderson and published by . This book was released on 1988-12-26 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dahlem Workshop Reports Etiology of Dementia of Alzheimer’s Type A. S. Henderson J. H. Henderson Editors Alzheimer’s disease represents one of the largest categories of chronic disability in the elderly throughout the world. This book is a timely and needed publication, exploring current research and the emerging prospects for discovering the causes of dementia of Alzheimer’s type. In the traditions of Dahlem Konferenzen, experts from epidemiology, neurophysiology, neuropsychology, neuropathology, neurochemistry, clinical psychiatry, clinical neurology and molecular biology shared their knowledge, their research findings and their thoughts on directions for future work. In particular, they decided what the most important questions for scientific progress in this field are. The selection of papers come from eminent and respected scientists and clinicians. The discussion reports, each from a multidisciplinary group, focus on specific topics: epidemiology and environmental factors, symptomatology, genetic and molecular biology, and the relation between dementing diseases of aging and the ‘normal’ process of aging. This book provides a wealth of material that encourages optimism for the future of research in these areas.

Book Glaciers and Environmental Change

Download or read book Glaciers and Environmental Change written by Atle Nesje and published by Hodder Arnold. This book was released on 2000 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Glaciers and Environmental Change provides a thorough and updated account of glaciers and ice sheets as monitors and indicators of environmental change. It examines the record of environmental change within glaciers and ice sheets, and that of past environments left by retreating glaciers. These themes are examined in general, within the context of environmental change, but the main focus of the text is on global climate change. Methods of using palaeoenvironmental records are assessed and the implications for future environmental change are discussed.
