Book Dad Jokes from Late in the Patriarchy

Download or read book Dad Jokes from Late in the Patriarchy written by Amorak Huey and published by . This book was released on 2021-05-15 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dad Jokes from Late in the Patriarchy, the fourth collection from award-winning poet Amorak Huey, is an unflinching, humorous meditation on American masculinity and fatherhood. Drawing on fictional characters, cultural figures, and personal stories, Huey deftly weaves an intergenerational tale about coming of age as a boy in the twentieth century and becoming a father in the twenty-first. In a collection built around the narrative structure of a joke, the poems' speakers reflect on the complex intersections of childhood, war, love, pop culture, and parenting. These speakers seek to define themselves via role models both personal and cultural, as societal and religious myths mingle with larger-than-life icons such as Arnold Schwarzenegger, Ariana Grande, and Davy Crockett. From Southwestern deserts to the flatlands of Indiana to the post-9/11 landscape of New York, Dad Jokes from Late in the Patriarchy deconstructs the enduring notion of American patriarchy and explores the delineations between collective and individual memory. Playful and profound, nostalgic but not naïve, these poems trace a masterful journey of personal discovery and fatherly love.

Partly a mythologized biography of heavy metal guitarist Slash, partly a fictionalized story of the complex relationship between Slash and his longtime bandmate Axl Rose, these poems dive into unanswerable questions. What does it mean to be larger than life? What matters more: the music you make or whether someone is listening? What is the difference between who you are and who you become?

Book The Metta Way the Western Path of Lovingkindness

Download or read book The Metta Way the Western Path of Lovingkindness written by George Hondruk and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2024-02-21 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offering a recap of the tumultuous times and events citizens have lived through since Korea, The Metta Way: the Western Path of Lovingkindness, by author George Hondruk, shares how we can arrive together at a new spiritual framework for life on this planet, through an enlightened democracy and the Metta-Seva Way. Hondruk narrates the story of his life and times, woven within the seminal events of the Cold War, Civil Rights, his sexual naivete and confusion about what manhood should be, the war in Indochina, the peace movement, his retreat to normalcy, his stirring of spirit, the opioid epidemic, and the major figures of those times with whom he interacted. He tells how he discovered the Metta-Seva Way, a better way of living with lovingkindness as the base thought and emotion, with selfless service following naturally. Hondruk identifies it as our successful species survival tool. The Metta Way: the Western Path of Lovingkindness delivers the message that equality comes through diversity and inclusion and is both the history and destination of democracy, America, and all of us.

Book Michael Paul Rogin

Download or read book Michael Paul Rogin written by Alyson Cole and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-02-18 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michael Paul Rogin’s scholarship profoundly altered the scope, content, and disposition of political theory. He reconstituted the field by opening it to an array of texts, performances, and methods previously considered beyond the purview of the discipline. His work addressed the relationship between dimensions of politics typically split apart – institutional power and cultural forms, material interests and symbolic meanings, class projects and identity politics, the public and the private. Rogin’s scholarship enlarges our sense of the borders and genres defining political theory as a field and enriches our capacity to think critically and creatively about the political. The editors have focused on three categories of substantive innovation: Demonology and Countersubversion Rogin used the concepts “countersubversive tradition” and “political demonology” to theorize how constitutive exclusions and charged images of otherness generated imagined national community. He exposed not only the dynamics of suppressing and delegitimizing political opposition, but also how politics itself is devalued and displaced. The Psychic Life of Liberal Society Rogin addressed the essential contradiction in liberalism as both an ideology and a regime – how a polity professing equality, liberty, and pluralist toleration engages in genocide, slavery, and imperial war. Political Mediation: Institutions and Culture Rogin demonstrated how cultural forms – pervasive myths, literary and cinematic works – mediate political life, and how political institutions mediate cultural energies and aspirations.

Book excerpt: “A powerful meditation on what it means to be trapped and what it takes to break free.” —Publishers Weekly STARRED Review A gripping memoir about coming of age in the stay-at-home daughter movement and the quest to piece together a future on your own terms. Raised in the Christian patriarchy movement, Cait West was homeschooled and could only wear clothes her father deemed modest. She was five years old the first time she was told her swimsuit was too revealing, to go change. There would be no college in her future, no career. She was a stay-at-home daughter and would move out only when her father allowed her to become a wife. She was trained to serve men, and her life would never be her own. Until she escaped. In Rift, Cait West tells a harrowing story of chaos and control hidden beneath the facade of a happy family. Weaving together lyrical meditations on the geology of the places her family lived with her story of spiritual and emotional manipulation as a stay-at-home daughter, Cait creates a stirring portrait of one young woman’s growing awareness that she is experiencing abuse. With the ground shifting beneath her feet, Cait mustered the courage to break free from all she’d ever known and choose a future of her own making. Rift is a story of survival. It’s also a story about what happens after you survive. With compassion and clarity, Cait explores the complex legacy of patriarchal religious trauma in her life, including the ways she has also been complicit in systems of oppression. A remarkable literary debut, Rift offers an essential personal perspective on the fraught legacy of purity culture and recent reckonings with abuse in Christian communities.
