Download or read book Casablanca written by Paul Puschmann and published by ACCO. This book was released on 2011 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A century ago, the modern metropolis of Casablanca, which today houses some three million inhabitants, was a small and unimportant coastal settlement. At that time, the Medina of Dar el Beida -- as Moroccans often call the city -- had only about 25,000 inhabitants. However, the arrival of the French changed Casablanca's destiny forever. Foreign investment and the construction of a large artificial ocean port transformed Dar el Beida swiftly into the new economic heart of Morocco. Like many other cities in the developing world, Dar el Beida attracted many times more migrants than it had jobs to offer. Consequently, unemployment increased and slums sprang up across the city. These ominous developments, however, did not stop hundreds of thousands of new immigrants arriving over the last century. As such, social disaster became inevitable. The author of this book explores the causes and consequences of persistent massive rural-to-urban migration to Dar el Beida during the twentieth century.
Download or read book Into the White written by Greg Houwer and published by ACCO. This book was released on 2010 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Into the white" lays bare a hidden overall logic in Kafka's work. Kafka's fictitious characters, instead of restoring an initial balance - as it is the case in most fiction -, do everything they can to maintain the imbalance. The book shows that this should be linked to Kafka's own relationship to his calling as a writer. Although 'called', Kafka always felt that he could never really 'enter the gate of his vocation': he could only wait before the open but unapproachable entrance. Writing carried a promise for Kafka that was unfulfillable. Hence, by keeping open the imbalance of its fictitious characters, Kafka's prose tries to sustain the promise.

Download or read book A Cultural History of Marriage in the Age of Empires written by Paul Puschmann and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-11-18 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the age of empires (1800–1900), marriage was a key transition in the life course worldwide, a rite of passage everywhere with major cultural significance. This volume presents an overview of the period with essays on Courtship and Ritual; Religion, State and Law; Kinship and Social Networks; the Family Economy; Love and Sex; the Breaking of Vows; and Representations of Marriage. Using this framework, this volume explores global trends in marriage. In nineteenth-century Western Europe, marriage was increasingly regarded as the only way to reach happiness and self-fulfilment. In the United States former slaves obtained the right to marry, leading to a convergence in marriage patterns between the black and white populations. In Latin America, marriage remained less common, but marriage rates were nevertheless on the rise. In African and Asian societies, European colonial powers tried to change indigenous marriage customs like polygamy and arranged marriages, but had limited success. Across the globe, in a time of turbulent political and economic change, marriage and the family remained crucial institutions, the linchpins of society that they had been for centuries.

Download or read book Urban Geography written by Michael Pacione and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 716 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text is an introduction to the study of towns and cities. The book synthesizes a wealth of material to provide a comprehensive introduction for students of urban geography, drawing on a rich blend of theoretical and empirical information, to advance their knowledge of the city. For the first time in the history of humankind, urban dwellers outnumber rural residents and this trend is destined to continue. Urban places, towns and cities are of fundamental importance: for the distribution of population within countries; in the organization of economic production, distribution and exchange; in the structuring of social reproduction and cultural life; and in the allocation and exercise of power. Even those living beyond the administrative or functional boundaries of a town or city, will have their lifestyle influenced to some degree by a nearby or distant city.
Download or read book Paths of Integration written by Leo Lucassen and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do some migrants integrate quickly, while others become long-term minorities? What is the role of the state in the settlement process? To what extent are experiences in the past different from the present? Are the recent migrants really integrating in another way than those in the past? Is Islam indeed an obstacle to integration? These are some of the burning questions, which dominate the current politicized debate on immigration in Western Europe. In this book, leading historians and social scientists analyze and compare a variety of settlement processes in past and present migration to Western Europe. Identifying general factors in the process of adaptation of new immigrants, the contributors trace social changes effected by recent European immigration, and the parallels with the great American migration of the 1880s-1920s. The history of migration to Western Europe and the way these migrants found their place in the receiving societies, is not only essential to understand the way nations deal with newcomers in the present, but also constitutes a highly interesting laboratory for different paths of integration now and then. By analyzing and comparing a wealth of settlement processes both in the past and in the present this book is both a bold interdisciplinary endeavor, and at the same time the first attempt to identify general factors underlying the way migrants adapt to their new surroundings, as well as how societies change under the influence of immigration. The chapters in the book both look at specific groups in various periods, but also analyses the structure of the state, churches unions and other important organized actors in Western European nation states. Moreover, the results are embedded in the more theoretical American literature on the comparison of old and new migrants. All chapters have an explicit comparative perspective, either by comparing different groups or different periods, whereas the general conclusion ties together the various outcomes in a systematic way, highlighting the main answers to the central questions about the various outcomes of settlement processes. --Publisher.
Download or read book Rural urban Migration in Developing Countries written by Somik V. Lall and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2006 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The migration of labor from rural to urban areas is an important part of the urbanization process in developing countries. Even though it has been the focus of abundant research over the past five decades, some key policy questions have not found clear answers yet. To what extent is internal migration a desirable phenomenon and under what circumstances? Should governments intervene and, if so, with what types of interventions? What should be their policy objectives? To shed light on these important issues, the authors survey the existing theoretical models and their conflicting policy implications and discuss the policies that may be justified based on recent relevant empirical studies. A key limitation is that much of the empirical literature does not provide structural tests of the theoretical models, but only provides partial findings that can support or invalidate intuitions and in that sense, support or invalidate the policy implications of the models. The authors' broad assessment of the literature is that migration can be beneficial or at least be turned into a beneficial phenomenon so that in general migration restrictions are not desirable. They also identify some data issues and research topics which merit further investigation. "--World Bank web site.
Download or read book G ographie et d veloppement Tome 2 written by Céline Yolande Koffie-Bikpo and published by Editions L'Harmattan. This book was released on 2018-10-19 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Download or read book D veloppement local gouvernance territoriale written by Amadou Diop and published by KARTHALA Editions. This book was released on 2008 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Download or read book Revue de la politique urbaine nationale du Maroc written by OECD and published by OECD Publishing. This book was released on 2024-09-11 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
