Book excerpt: Ce travail de thèse s'inscrit dans le cadre du projet SPIRAL (Système de Production d'Ions Radioactifs Accélérés en Ligne) dont la mise en service débutera en septembre 2001 au GANIL (Grand Accélérateur National d'Ions Lourds) de Caen. Cette thèse a essentiellement porté sur le développement de systèmes de production d'ions radioactifs (ensemble cible source) par l'étude approfondie de chaque étape de la production par la méthode ISOL (Isotopic Separation On Line) : la production par fragmentation de la cible et/ou du projectile, la diffusion hors du matériau cible, l'effusion jusqu'à la source d'ionisation et enfin l'ionisation des atomes radioactifs. Une étude bibliographique et des simulations thermiques ont permis d'optimiser au mieux les matériaux et la forme des cibles de production et de diffusion. Une première cible a été optimisée et fiabilisée pour la production de gaz rares radioactifs (Argon, Néon...). Une deuxième cible dédiée à la production d'Héliums radioactifs a entièrement été conçue (du cahier des charges jusqu'aux tests "hors ligne" et "en ligne"). Enfin, un troisième ensemble cible source a été défini pour la production d'alcalins radioactifs monochargés. Les intensités de faisceaux secondaires prévues pour SPIRAL y sont présentées. Une étude détaillée sur les efficacités de diffusion effusion pour ces différentes cibles a montré que l'utilisation d'un carbone dont la microstructure est fine (grain de 1 micron m) améliore la diffusion ainsi que l'importance de l'épaisseur des lamelles dans l'effusion des isotopes de courts temps de vie.

Ce programme vise d'une façons générale à déterminer les conditions optimales pour produire d'intenses faisceaux d'isotopes riches en neutrons. Cette thèse traite des multiples aspects techniques liés à la production d'isotopes radioactifs séparés en ligne (ISOL). Elle porte principalement sur le développement de l'ensemble cible-source qui est l'élément clé pour les projets comme SPIRAL-2 ou EURISOL.La première partie présente les différentes méthodes utilisant la fission comme réaction exploitée en ligne ainsi que leur comparaison: fission thermique, fission induite par des neutrons rapides et photofission. L'expérience faite au CERN a permis de valider la photofission comme mode prometteur pour la production d'ions radioactifs, c'est pour cela que l'IPN d'Orsay a décidé de construire un Accélérateur Linéaire d'électrons auprès du Tandem d'Orsay (ALTO).La deuxième partie de cette thèse a porté sur le développement de cibles d'uranium. Des techniques d'analyse comme la diffraction X et la Microscopie Electronique à Balayage ont été utilisées. Elles ont permis de déterminer les caractéristiques chimiques et structurales de cibles de carbure d'uranium portées à différentes températures de chauffage. Après la production, le processus d'ionisation est étudié. Deux types de sources ont été mises en œuvre : La première est une source à ionisation de surface et la deuxième est une source basée sur l'ionisation résonante par laser. Ces deux types de sources seront utilisées pour le projet ALTO.

Ce travail de thèse a porté sur plusieurs techniques différentes basées sur la méthode ISOL. La première est la production de faisceaux d'ions radioactifs à partir d'un ensemble cible-source de SPIRAL (cible + source ECR). Les taux de production des faisceaux de néon radioactif ont été déterminés sur le banc de tests SIRa et les prévisions pour SPIRAL ont été établies. La faisabilité de la production de faisceaux d'éléments radioactifs condensables à partir d'un tel ensemble cible-source, en utilisant un transport sous une forme moléculaire volatile entre la cible et la source, a été démontré expérimentalement en produisant des faisceaux d'oxygène radioactif via la molécule CO. La deuxième technique est la production de faisceaux d'alcalins radioactifs à partir de l'ensemble cible-source MONILITHE (cible + source à cavité chaude). Les efficacités de production des faisceaux de lithium et de sodium radioactifs ont été déterminées. Une nouvelle méthodologie, la " méthode globale ", a été développée dans le cadre de cette thèse, afin de déduire les propriétés de diffusion, d'effusion et d'ionisation de ces deux éléments à partir de cet ensemble. Elle a montré que l'évolution des propriétés de diffusion entre les différents alcalins a un comportement similaire à celle entre les différents gaz rares. La troisième est la technique IGISOL (cible + guide d'ions). Le code MI-GI-CHEMIN a été conçu afin de reproduire le mouvement des ions dans un guide d'ions, rempli d'hélium et d'une concentration donnée d'impuretés, incluant des champs électriques et magnétiques. Un premier prototype IGISOL est en cours de réalisation au GANIL.

Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive and pedagogical account of the various methods used in the quantum theory of finite systems, including molecular, atomic, nuclear, and particle phenomena. Covering both background material and advanced topics and including nearly 200 problems, Quantum Theory of Finite Systems has been designed to serve primarily as a text and will also prove useful as a reference in research. The first of the book's four parts introduces the basic mathematical apparatus: second quantization, canonical transformations, Wick theorems and the resulting diagram expansions, and oscillator models. The second part presents mean field approximations and the recently developed path integral methods for the quantization of collective modes. Part three develops perturbation theory in terms of both time-dependent Feynman diagrams and time-independent Goldstone diagrams. A fourth part discusses variational methods based on correlated wavefunctions, including spin correlations. The approximation schemes are formulated for fermions and bosons at eigher zero or non-zero temperature. Although the formalism developed applies to both finite and infinite systems, the book stresses those aspects of the theory that are specific to the description of finite systems. Thus special attention is given to mean field approximations, the ensuing broken symmetries, and the associated collective motions such as rotations. Conversely, some specific features of systems with infinite numbers of degrees of freedom (such as the thermodynamic limit, critical phenomena, and the elimination of ultraviolet divergencies) are deliberately omitted. Jean-Paul Blaizot and Georges Ripka are associated with the Centre d'Etudes Nucleaires de Saclay.

Book excerpt: This book celebrates the relaunch of the African Pollen Database, presents state-of-the-art of modern and ancient pollen data from sub-Saharan Africa, and promotes Open Access science. Pollen grains are powerful tools for the study of past vegetation dynamics because they preserve well within sedimentary deposits and have a huge diversity in ornamentation that allows different taxa to be determined. The reconstruction of past vegetation from the examination of ancient pollen records thus can be used to characterize the nature of past landscapes (e.g. abundance of forests vs. grasslands), provide insights into changes in biodiversity, and gain empirical evidence of vegetation response to climatic change and human activity. In this, the 35th Volume of "Palaeoecology of Africa", we bring together new data and extensive synthetic reviews to provide novel insights into the relationships between human evolution, human activity, climate change and vegetation dynamics during the Quaternary, the last 2.6 million years. Current and ongoing climate and land-use change is exerting pressure on modern vegetation formations and threatening the livelihoods and wellbeing of many peoples in Africa. In this book the focus is on the Quaternary because it is during this geological period that the modern vegetation formations developed into their current configurations against a backdrop of high magnitude global climate change (glacial-interglacial cycles), human evolution, and a growing human land-use footprint. In this book the latest information is presented and collated from around the African continent to parameterize past vegetation states, identify the drivers of vegetation change, and assess the vegetation resilience to change. To achieve this research from two broad themes are covered: (i) the present is the key to the past (i.e. studies which improve our understanding of modern environments so that we can better interpret evidence from the past), and (ii) the past is the key to the future (i.e. studies which unlock information on how and why vegetation changed in the past so one can better anticipate trajectories of future change). This Open Access book will provide a strong foundation for future research exploring past ecological, environmental and climatic change within Africa and the surrounding islands. The book is organized regionally (covering western, eastern, central, and southern Africa) and it contains specialized articles focused on particular topics (such as modern pollen-vegetation relationships and fire as a driver of vegetation change), as well as regional and pan-African syntheses drawing together decades of research to assess key scientific questions (including the role of climate in driving vegetation change and the role of vegetation change in human evolution). These articles will be useful to students and teachers from high school to the highest level of university who are interested in the origins and dynamics of vegetation in Africa. Furthermore, it is also meant to provide societally relevant information that can act as an inspiration for the development of sustainable management practices for the future.
