Book History of the Huguenot Emigration to America

Download or read book History of the Huguenot Emigration to America written by Charles W. Baird and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This extensively-researched two-volume series offers a detailed account of "the coming of the persecuted Protestants of France to the New World, and their establishment, particularly in the seaboard provinces [New England] now comprehended within the United States....The volumes now submitted to the public treat first of these antecedent movements, and then take up the narrative of the events that led to the more considerable and more effective emigration, in the latter years of the seventeenth century." This very readable narrative history is rich with details about persons, places and events. Much of the information preserved on these pages was gleaned from unpublished documents found in the United States, France and England: "Manuscripts in the possession of the descendants of refugees; memorials, petitions, wills, and other papers on file in public offices;" as well as numerous church records and other original documents. Volume I includes: Attempted Settlements in Brazil and Florida, Under the Edict: Acadia and Canada, New Netherland, The Antilles, Approach of the Revocation, and The Revocation: Flight from La Rochelle and Aunis. Illustrations, maps, and an appendix enhance the text. An index to full-names, places and subjects for both volumes is contained in Volume II.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection explores a broad range of topics approaching environmental ethics from many different angles. A common thread running through the volume is the analysis of ethical principles as the backbone of practical policies and law for the benefit of the environment, and ultimately for the benefit of its inhabitants. The contributors are all at the forefront of their respective fields and fall into two essential categories: well-established scholars in the field of environmental ethics; and a group of newer voices that have followed what might be characterized as the first wave of environmental ethics scholarship.

Book Nine Ulster Lives

Download or read book Nine Ulster Lives written by Gerard O'Brien and published by Ulster Historical Foundation. This book was released on 1992 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The significant contributions to the development of modern society made by Ulster men and women are often overlooked in current assessments of the province and its people. This book aims to redress the balance somewhat by providing an appreciation of the lives of nine people of Ulster origin who deserve to be remembered both for their personal achievements and for their public importance. The lives included have emerged from a variety of backgrounds and span a period of some four centuries. Some carried with them a warm appreciation of their origins, and a few returned either to visit or remain in Ulster as their lvies drew to a close. Others sustained the Ulster side of their identity quietly, even unsuspectingly. If the latter are harder to detect, their discovery for the reader will be all the more rewarding. Of the eight men and one woman - scientists, soldiers, politicians, clergyman, artist, scholar - few have been remembered, except perhaps by obituarists, as being of Ulster origin. The importance of their roots is best conveyed by the telling in these pages of their individual and compelling stories.
