Book Biology and Evolution of the Mollusca Volume 1

Download or read book Biology and Evolution of the Mollusca Volume 1 written by Winston Frank Ponder and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-11-18 with total page 1524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Molluscs comprise the second largest phylum of animals (after arthropods), occurring in virtually all habitats. Some are commercially important, a few are pests and some carry diseases, while many non-marine molluscs are threatened by human impacts which have resulted in more extinctions than all tetrapod vertebrates combined. This book and its companion volume provide the first comprehensive account of the Mollusca in decades. Illustrated with hundreds of colour figures, it reviews molluscan biology, genomics, anatomy, physiology, fossil history, phylogeny and classification. This volume includes general chapters drawn from extensive and diverse literature on the anatomy and physiology of their structure, movement, reproduction, feeding, digestion, excretion, respiration, nervous system and sense organs. Other chapters review the natural history (including ecology) of molluscs, their interactions with humans, and assess research on the group. Key features of both volumes: up to date treatment with an extensive bibliography; thoroughly examines the current understanding of molluscan anatomy, physiology and development; reviews fossil history and phylogenetics; overviews ecology and economic values; and summarises research activity and suggests future directions for investigation. Winston F Ponder was a Principal Research Scientist at The Australian Museum in Sydney where he is currently a Research Fellow. He has published extensively over the last 55 years on the systematics, evolution, biology and conservation of marine and freshwater molluscs, as well as supervised post graduate students and run university courses. David R. Lindberg is former Chair of the Department of Integrative Biology, Director of the Museum of Paleontology, and Chair of the Berkeley Natural History Museums, all at the University of California. He has conducted research on the evolutionary history of marine organisms and their habitats on the rocky shores of the Pacific Rim for more than 40 years. The numerous elegant and interpretive illustrations were produced by Juliet Ponder.

Book The Masterpiece of Nature

Download or read book The Masterpiece of Nature written by Graham Bell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-11-28 with total page 634 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1982, The Masterpiece of Nature examines sex as representative of the most important challenge to the modern theory of evolution. The book suggests that sex evolved, not as the result of normal Darwinian processes of natural selection, but through competition between populations or species - a hypothesis elsewhere almost universally discredited. The book also discusses the nature of sex and its consequences for the individual and for the population, as well as various other theories of sex. Since the value of these theories is held to reside wholly in their ability to predict the patterns of sexuality observed in nature, the book seeks to provide an extensive review of the circumstances in which sexuality is attenuated or lost throughout the animal kingdom, and these facts are then used to weigh up the merits of the rival theories. This book will be of interest to researchers in the area of genetics, ecology and evolutionary biology.

Download or read book Physiology of Mollusca written by Karl M. Wilbur and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physiology of Mollusca, Volume I focuses on the physiology of mollusks, as well as respiration, reproduction, embryogenesis, gastrulation, and shell formation and regeneration. The selection first offers information on the classification and structure of the Mollusca and the physiological aspects of the ecology of intertidal mollusks. Topics include respiration and excretion of shore mollusks, physiological variations in intertidal mollusks, Amphineura and Monoplacophora, Cephalopoda, Scaphopoda, and Gastropoda. The publication then evaluates the physiological aspects of ecology in nonmarine mollusks and reproduction of mollusks. The book touches on the development of mollusks and the culture of marine bivalve larvae. Discussions focus on gastrulation, embryogenesis, cleavage, and culture under laboratory conditions and in ponds and outdoor tanks. The manuscript then explains shell formation and regeneration, osmotic and ionic regulation, and muscle and neuromuscular physiology. The selection is highly recommended for readers interested in the physiology of mollusks.

Book Reproduction of Marine Invertebrates V4

Download or read book Reproduction of Marine Invertebrates V4 written by Arthur Giese and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reproduction of Marine Invetebrates, Volume IV Molluscs: Gastropods and Cephalopods describes the wide range of structural complexity and diverse modes of reproduction of gastropods and cephalopods. Each chapter discusses the asexual reproduction, sexual reproduction capacity, and developmental stages of different group of gastropods and cephalopods, including prosobranchia, opisthobranchia, pulmonata, nautiloidea, decapoda, and octopoda. Gastropods are among the most conspicuous sea animals, and species of limpets, snails, and slugs are found in all marine habitats. Cephalopods are active and important marine predators, ranging from archaic nautiloids to more recent pelagic decapods and benthic octopods, which are often considered to be one of the apexes of invertebrate evolution. They are all gonochoric and reproduce only by sexual means. All have intricate courtship behavior and derived developmental patterns. Marine biologists and researchers, scientists, and developmental biologists will find this book invaluable.
