Download or read book HIGH CURRENT LONG PULSE GYROTRON BACKWARD WAVE OSCILLATOR EXPERIMENTS written by THOMAS ALLEN SPENCER and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: the existence of the gyro-backward-wave, as well as show the magnetic tunability of the gyrotron-backward-wave. In the solid beam case (1-2 kA), about 300-800 kW of extracted microwave power was detected in the waveguide detection system, implying that approximately 3-8 MW (efficiency $\sim$1-2%) of power is generated from the gyro-BWO device. The pulselengths for the solid beam case were from 300-600 ns (essentially the total flat-top voltage pulselength) over a frequency range of 4.5-6 GHz. The

Book Cyclotron Resonance Interaction at Millimeter Wavelengths

Download or read book Cyclotron Resonance Interaction at Millimeter Wavelengths written by K. K. Chow and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cyclotron resonance interaction between a electron beam and a circuit wave to produce backward wave oscillation in an unloaded waveguide in the S-band was investigated, and the development of a prototype oscillator tube to work in the 6-4.5 mm range was also completed. This prototype tube was so constructed that it could be placed in a narrow air gap of an iron-core electr magnet which provided the necessary field for electron cyclotron motion. However, it did not have the desired performance. Modifications made on the prototype tube and tube performance after modification are described. A different design is also reported. The main difficulty encountered in improving tube performance was the inability to control electron injection properly. Even at the conclusion o the experimental work described here, the control was not entirely satisfactory, though net electronic gain from the tube was obtainable. A secondary difficulty was the lack of space in which to place the tube components; however, this was later solved. (Author).

Book A Small signal Analysis of the Electron Cyclotron Backward wave Oscillator

Download or read book A Small signal Analysis of the Electron Cyclotron Backward wave Oscillator written by K. K. Chow and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A small signal analysis is presented of the electron cyclotron BWO. The method used is the normal-mode expansion type of analysis. The electromagnetic field existing in the circuit in the presence of RF current is expanded as a double infinite series of normal modes, out of which only one mode is in approximate dc synchronism with the beam and contributes to cumulative interaction. The RF current is computed from the equation of electron motion under the dc and RF fields. Combination of the circuit equation with the RF current equation leads to the solution of the propagation constants of the waves. This contains 6 roots; 2 of them, being very far from synchronism, are not considered for the normal operation of this tube. The remaining 4 consist of 3 backward waves and 1 forward circuit wave; of the 3 backward waves, 2 are recognized as being originated from the backward fast cyclotron wave, and 1 is from the backward circuit wave. Start-oscillation conditions can be calculated from a knowledge of these propagation constants. (Author).

Book Introduction to the Physics of Gyrotrons

Download or read book Introduction to the Physics of Gyrotrons written by Gregory S. Nusinovich and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2020-03-03 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As unique sources of coherent high-power, microwave, and millimeter-wave radiation, gyrotrons are an essential part of the hunt for controlled fusion. Presently, gyrotrons are actively used for electron cyclotron resonance plasma heating and current drive in various controlled fusion reactors. These sources have been under development in many countries for more than forty years. In spite of their widespread use, however, there is as yet no single book to introduce non-specialists to this vital field. Now Gregory S. Nusinovich, an early pioneer of the gyrotron and widely regarded today as the world's leading authority on the subject, explains the fundamental physical principles upon which gyrotrons and related devices operate. Nusinovich first sets forth some "rules of thumb" that allow readers to understand gyrotron operation in simple terms. He then explores the fundamentals of the general theory of gyrotrons and offers an overview of the various types of gyro-devices, including gyromonotrons, gyroklystrons, gyro-traveling-wave tubes, and gyrotwystrons. He explains not only the theory, linear and nonlinear, but also the practical challenges that users of such devices face. This book will be of interest to undergraduate and graduate students as well as to those who develop gyrotrons or who use them in various applications. It should also appeal to plasma physicists interested in charged-particle dynamics, as well as to applied physicists needing to know more about micro- and millimeter-wave technologies.
