Book Fatigue of Materials

Download or read book Fatigue of Materials written by S. Suresh and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1998-10-29 with total page 708 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by a leading researcher in the field, this revised and updated second edition of a highly successful book provides an authoritative, comprehensive and unified treatment of the mechanics and micromechanisms of fatigue in metals, non-metals and composites. The author discusses the principles of cyclic deformation, crack initiation and crack growth by fatigue, covering both microscopic and continuum aspects. The book begins with discussions of cyclic deformation and fatigue crack initiation in monocrystalline and polycrystalline ductile alloys as well as in brittle and semi-/non-crystalline solids. Total life and damage-tolerant approaches are then introduced in metals, non-metals and composites followed by more advanced topics. The book includes an extensive bibliography and a problem set for each chapter, together with worked-out example problems and case studies. This will be an important reference for anyone studying fracture and fatigue in materials science and engineering, mechanical, civil, nuclear and aerospace engineering, and biomechanics.

Book Fatigue Damage Crack Growth and Life Prediction

Download or read book Fatigue Damage Crack Growth and Life Prediction written by F. Ellyin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue failure is a multi-stage process. It begins with the initiation of cracks, and with continued cyclic loading the cracks propagate, finally leading to the rupture of a component or specimen. The demarcation between the above stages is not well-defined. Depending upon the scale of interest, the variation may span three orders of magnitude. For example, to a material scientist an initiated crack may be of the order of a micron, whereas for an engineer it can be of the order of a millimetre. It is not surprising therefore to see that investigation of the fatigue process has followed different paths depending upon the scale of phenomenon under investigation. Interest in the study of fatigue failure increased with the advent of industrial ization. Because of the urgent need to design against fatigue failure, early investiga tors focused on prototype testing and proposed failure criteria similar to design formulae. Thus, a methodology developed whereby the fatigue theories were proposed based on experimental observations, albeit at times with limited scope. This type of phenomenological approach progressed rapidly during the past four decades as closed-loop testing machines became available.

Book Cyclic Deformation and Fatigue of Metals

Download or read book Cyclic Deformation and Fatigue of Metals written by M. Bílý and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An integral review is given in this book on the fatigue phenomenon covering the fundamentals of fatigue damage initiation, relevant factors influencing fatigue crack propagation and fatigue life, random load analysis, and simulation for theoretical and experimental fatigue life assessment. The entire chain of problems related to fatigue of metals and structural components is covered. Specifically, it describes the low-cycle plastic properties and statistically interprets the material stress reaction, examining original results of investigations on inelastic deformations under high cycle cyclic loading and correlating them with a number of use parameters. The limit states of bodies with primary defects and their resistance to fatigue crack propagation are discussed. Measurements, analysis and real-time modelling of operating loads for experimental fatigue life verification are reviewed as well as introducing some new fatigue damage accumulation hypotheses based on dissipated energy. Various operating and environmental factors of the fatigue life are analyzed, including temperature, metal structures, corrosive environment, stress-strain amplitudes and their changes, random load (strain) properties, stress gradient frequency, mean level, etc. The work is intended for all those involved in research and development in the metal, machine and structure fields.

Book Advances in Research on the Strength and Fracture of Materials

Download or read book Advances in Research on the Strength and Fracture of Materials written by D. M. R. Taplin and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 747 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Research on the Strength and Fracture of Materials: Volume 2Bs—Fatigue contains the proceedings of the Fourth International Conference on Fracture, held at the University of Waterloo, Canada, in June 1977. The papers review the state of the art with respect to fracture in a wide range of materials such as metals and alloys. This volume is comprised of 85 chapters and opens by discussing the metallographic aspects of fatigue in pearlitic structures and the dislocation diffusion mechanism of fatigue crack formation. The reader is then introduced to localized plastic deformation and fracture in slip bands during fatigue loading of age hardening aluminum alloys; the microstructure of fatigue fracture surfaces in titanium; mechanisms of liquid metal embrittlement, stress corrosion cracking, and corrosion-fatigue; and the fatigue behavior of macroscopic slag inclusions in steam turbo-generator rotor steels. A model for fatigue crack initiation in polycrystalline solids is also described. This monograph will be a useful resource for metallurgists, materials scientists, and structural and mechanical engineers.
