Book A Cyclic Undrained Simple Shear Testing Method for Soils

Download or read book A Cyclic Undrained Simple Shear Testing Method for Soils written by F. Tatsuoka and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An undrained simple shear testing method for soils using a torsional shear apparatus is described, in which a hollow cylindrical specimen is sheared under plane strain conditions without deforming and rotating all horizontal planes. In this testing method, the simple shear deformation mode is achieved only by several mechanical means without using an automated pressure control system. Typical results of cyclic undrained simple shear tests using uniform cyclic shear stresses on one-dimensionally consolidated saturated sand are presented. A similar undrained testing method with the same inner and outer lateral confining pressures, in which the simple shear condition is satisfied only in an approximated way, is also described. The test results show that the deviation of the stress-strain behavior in the approximate testing method from that under the exact simple shear condition increases as the shear strain increases. However, it was also found that for the purpose of evaluating cyclic undrained simple shear strength values defined by the amplitude of cyclic shear strain, the use of this approximate testing method is justified.

Book A New Cyclic Simple Shear Test Procedure with Multidirectional Loading

Download or read book A New Cyclic Simple Shear Test Procedure with Multidirectional Loading written by Viet Hung Le and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This article presents a new procedure for cyclic simple shear tests with a change in the loading direction. For the experimental investigation of sand under drained condition, a conventional simple shear test device (unidirectional simple shear) was used. After modification of the specimen cell, the cell can rotate during the test, enabling the load direction to be changed. The construction of this modified version and its test procedure are explained in detail. This modification and test procedure can also be used for different simple shear devices of the same type. Furthermore, a test series involving Berlin sand was conducted with the direction of cyclic loading being changed once during each test. The test results indicate that a change in the cyclic direction has a significant influence on the accumulated deformation of sand.

Book Design of Piles Under Cyclic Loading

Download or read book Design of Piles Under Cyclic Loading written by Alain Puech and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2017-11-29 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent developments in the fields of energy, transport and industrial engineering have led to the emergence of new types of structures and infrastructures subject to variable stresses, for which the usual methods for designing pile foundations are now inadequate. The recommendations presented in this book will help to partly fill this technical gap by proposing a methodological approach and calculation methods to take account of the effects of cyclic loads in the design of foundations on piles. These are based on both laboratory and full scale experiments, and on modeling carried out within the framework of the national SOLCYP project.

Book A Simple Approach to Performing Large Strain Cyclic Simple Shear Tests Methodology and Experimental Results

Download or read book A Simple Approach to Performing Large Strain Cyclic Simple Shear Tests Methodology and Experimental Results written by Waqas Muhammad and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A simple and efficient methodology has been proposed for characterizing the large strain cyclic simple shear behavior of engineering materials. The proposed methodology includes the use of a modified test specimen coupled with a digital image correlation system to measure the evolution of shear strains during cyclic simple shear deformation. The effectiveness and simplicity of the proposed testing procedure for cyclic simple shear testing lie in the fact that it does not require any custom test apparatus or fixtures to conduct cyclic simple shear tests. The proposed test sample for cyclic simple shear testing makes use of conventional tensile machine with standard grips to conduct the tests. Furthermore, the coupling of the digital image correlation system allows for full-field surface strain mapping, enabling measurement of shear strain evolution throughout the cyclic shear deformation, avoiding any complications associated with shear strain measurements using conventional extensometry techniques. The proposed methodology is successfully applied to characterize the large strain cyclic simple shear behavior of extruded aluminum alloy AA6063 in both T4 and T6 tempered conditions. The obtained cyclic simple shear results are further discussed in light of microstructure evolution during cyclic simple shear deformation.

Book Cyclic Simple Shear Testing of Granular Materials

Download or read book Cyclic Simple Shear Testing of Granular Materials written by P. Shaw and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developments to a pneumatically operated simple shear apparatus for dry granular materials allowing application of cyclic shear and normal stresses are described. Boundary transducers were of only limited success for stress measurement so a prediction method for complete description of the stress state was used. Tests on uniform crushed limestone of 1.5- and 3-mm nominal sizes showed that increased volumetric strains were developed under cyclic normal stress and bidirectional shearing. Shear strains were not much influenced by cyclic application of the normal stress.

Book Earthquake resistant Design Of Masonry Buildings

Download or read book Earthquake resistant Design Of Masonry Buildings written by Miha Tomazevic and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1999-07-05 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last few decades, a considerable amount of experimental and analytical research on the seismic behaviour of masonry walls and buildings has been carried out. The investigations resulted in the development of methods for seismic analysis and design, as well as new technologies and construction systems. After many centuries of traditional use and decades of allowable stress design, clear concepts for limit state verification of masonry buildings under earthquake loading have recently been introduced in codes of practice.Although this book is not a review of the state-of-the-art of masonry structures in earthquake zones, an attempt has been made to balance the discussion on recent code requirements, state-of-the-art methods of earthquake-resistant design and the author's research work, in order to render the book useful for a broader application in design practice. An attempt has also been made to present, in a condensed but easy to understand way, all the information needed for earthquake-resistant design of masonry buildings constructed using traditional systems. The basic concepts of limit state verification are presented and equations for seismic resistance verification of masonry walls of all types of construction, (unreinforced, confined and reinforced) as well as masonry-infilled reinforced concrete frames, are addressed. A method for seismic resistance verification, compatible with recent code requirements, is also discussed. In all cases, experimental results are used to explain the proposed methods and equations. An important part of this book is dedicated to the discussion of the problems of repair, retrofit and rehabilitation of existing masonry buildings, including historical structures in urban centres. Methods of strengthening masonry walls as well as improving the structural integrity of existing buildings are described in detail. Wherever possible, experimental evidence regarding the effectiveness of the proposed strengthening methods is given.
