Book Cuxton Halling and Snodland 1851 1871

Download or read book Cuxton Halling and Snodland 1851 1871 written by Rosemary A. Lea and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cuxton, Halling and Snodland are three villages on the West bank of the Lower Medway. Geographically and geologically they would appear to have had much in common, but during the period 1851 to 1871 the population of Halling and Snodland rose at a greater rate than was usual for England and Wales while the population of Cuxton rose slowly until 1861 and then declined. The 1851, 1861 and 1871 census enumerators books were used, as the main source, to compare and analyse the population of these three villages. The analyses made were mostly by heads of household and by lodgers and compared the distributions of population, patterns of occupations, mobility and age structure. There was an upsurge of industrial activity along the Lower Medway during this twenty year period and the villages were affected by this in different ways and by different degrees. Cuxton continued to be a traditional agricultural village under the aegis of their landowner Lord Darnley and of their Rector while Halling and Snodland became more independent on their industry and the industralists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Inside Deaf Culture relates deaf people's search for a voice of their own, and their proud self-discovery and self-description as a flourishing culture. Padden and Humphries show how the nineteenth-century schools for the deaf, with their denigration of sign language and their insistence on oralist teaching, shaped the lives of deaf people for generations to come. They describe how deaf culture and art thrived in mid-twentieth century deaf clubs and deaf theatre, and profile controversial contemporary technologies." Cf. Publisher's description.

Book excerpt: Alan MacFarlane has studied the parishes of Earls Colne in Essex and Kirkby Lonsdale in Cumbria, as well as other parishes, and has undertaken anthropological fieldwork in a contemporary community in Nepal. In collaboration with Sarah Harrison and Charles Jardine he has devised a method of collecting, breaking down and then reintegrating historical records in a way which makes it possible to answer some of the sociological, demographic, anthropological, geographical and other questions which interest many people. For the amateur historian or genealogist who wants to know about a village or family, the method makes it possible to find out almost everything that survives in historical documents concerning each person who lived in a village, each plot of land and house.

Book The Kent Sussex Weald

Download or read book The Kent Sussex Weald written by Peter Brandon and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Wealds of Kent, Surrey and Sussex had detractors over almost all their history but are now regarded as embodying England at its most characteristically delightful. The author explores how places such as Ashdown Forest and wooded west Kent, which were long disliked and even feared, have come to be perceived as jewels of landscape for leisure and recreation. He also traces the unremitting labour of generations of the region's small farmers to clear and settle a great expanse of wild country that has resulted in one of the most notable pieces of man's handiwork in Europe, and which has persisted to an astonishing degree relatively unchanged over a course of some eight centuries or more. This human story began as a saga of man against forest and continued as one of the interaction of man with trees - cared for to provide shipbuilding timber and fuel; to sustain the region's handicrafts; saved from the forester's axe to provide sporting pleasures and planted in pineta, arboreta and 'wild gardens' by Victorian and Edwardian 'nouveaux riches'. This book will enrich the enjoyment of those who reside in the Weald or live in sight of it and is essential reading for those whose interest in it is as landowner, farmer, ecologist, planner, conservationist, councillor or local historian.
