Book Costs of Farm Machinery in Crop Production in Northwestern Ohio by Size of Farm Classic Reprint

Download or read book Costs of Farm Machinery in Crop Production in Northwestern Ohio by Size of Farm Classic Reprint written by James Vermeer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-12 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Costs of Farm Machinery in Crop Production in Northwestern Ohio, by Size of Farm The farms studied were limited to full-time farms on which crop sales provided the major source of gross farm income. Corn, soybeans, and small grains were the major crops, occupying from 85 to 90 percent of the cropland. The proportion of farms growing hay increased as size of farm increased. More than 90 percent of the small farms were owner-operated, whereas part or all of the land was rented on 80 percent of the large farms. Total machinery costs per acre of use include fixed and variable costs of implement and tractor and a charge for the tractor driver's labor. These costs on the large farms averaged only two-thirds as high as on the small farms and about four-fifths as high as on the medium-sized farms. Lower costs per acre on large farms resulted chiefly from the larger acreage covered per machine annually, and use of newer, more efficient, and larger machines. The combination of these factors significantly-reduced charges for depreciation, interest, Operator labor, and fuel per acre of use. This book was released on 2017-11-20 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study of the Cost of Horse and Tractor Power on Illinois Farms That many farmers can cut their operating costs without changing their type of power is indicated by the wide variation found in operating costs among farms similar in size and produc tive organization and operated with the same type of power. On the other hand it is doubtless true that many farmers have profited by changing their power organization and that still others would profit by doing so. Because of its distinctive place on com -belt farms, the general purpose tractor is considered separately from the standard tractor in all analyses of tractor power made in this study. Book The Farm Cost Situation

Download or read book The Farm Cost Situation written by United States Department Of Agriculture and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-07 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Farm Cost Situation: November 1963 The relation of operating expense to gross income varies considerably by types of farms in various locations throughout the country. Operating ex penses generally comprise a lower percentage of gross income on extensive types of farms such as cattle ranches in the Intermountain region of the West and the winter wheat farms of the Southern Plains, on which hired labor is a relatively small input and large acreages of land are required. In recent years, operating expenses have comprised about 40 percent of gross income on those farms. Oper ating expenses usually take the highest percentage of gross income on fruit and vegetable farms, poultry farms, dairy farms, and feeder livestock operations. On poultry farms in New Jersey, for example, the ratio of operating expenses to gross income averaged 89 percent over the 1958 - 62 period. Book Farm Equipment Prices Margins and Related Marketing Costs Classic Reprint

Download or read book Farm Equipment Prices Margins and Related Marketing Costs Classic Reprint written by Leland Southard and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-11 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Farm Equipment Prices, Margins, and Related Marketing Costs Prices paid for farm equipment have been increasing faster than for all farm production items. During 1972 - 77, farm equipment prices rose 83 percent, while prices for all production items rose 65 percent (table Moreover, farm equipment prices increased twice as much as the general price level as measured by the gnp implicit price deflator (fig. The rapid rise in farm equipment prices followed sharp increases in farm prices and incomes in 1973 and 1974. Farm prices for all agricultural products rose 54 percent during 1972 - 74, but have declined slightly since that time, while farm equipment prices continued to rise. Largely as the result of rising prices, farm equipment expenditures rose from billion in 1972 to billion in 1977. These expenditures have averaged 10 percent of total production costs. For farm operations such as wheat farming, however, equipment ownership charges account for about one-third of total production costs. Book The Determination of Farming Costs Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Determination of Farming Costs Classic Reprint written by Charles Stewart Orwin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-14 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Determination of Farming Costs Nor is the question under discussion at the moment the consideration of whether such method, or some modification of it, can be adopted for ordinary farm accounts. The ques tion of farm accounts in practice is a matter of marginal utility. In industry it has been the experience of factory managers that it is economical to introduce methods of con trol which, in themselves, appear to add to the cost of pro duction, and many of those who have made it their business to study the problem of agricultural production are of the opinion that this will be, one day, the experience of farm managers likewise. There is, however, a degree of exactness, required in cost determinations which may be so troublesome, and so expensive of time and labour when judged by the general standard of the business organization of the average farm, that it would not be profitable for the ordinary farmer. But' this possibility does not affect the importance of having, in a number of cases, an exhaustive and scientific analysis of farming costs, and if this can be done in a number of typical farms the results will have a value as supplying standards of comparison. In this work the Institute for Research in Agricultural Economics is still at the beginning, and it has not yet reached the stage at which generalizations can be made. Book Farm Implements and Farm Machinery

Download or read book Farm Implements and Farm Machinery written by John J. Thomas and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-08 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Farm Implements and Farm Machinery: And the Principles of Their Construction and Use; With Simple and Practical Explanations of the Laws of Motion and Force as Applied on the Farm Nothing shows the advancement of modern agriculture in a more striking light than the rapid improvement in farm implements. It has enabled the farmer within the last fifty years to effect several times the work with an equal force of horses and men. Plows turn up the soil deeper, more evenly and perfectly, and with greater ease of draught; hoes and spades have become lighter and more efficient; grain, instead of being beaten out by the slow and laborious work of the flail, is now showered in torrents from the thrashing-machine; horse-rakes aecom plish singly the work of many men using the Old hand rake; horse-forks convey hay to the barn or stack with ease and rapidity; twelve acres Of ripe grain are neatly cut in one day with a two-horse reaper; grain drills and planting machines, avoiding the tiresome drudgery of hand labor, distribute the seed for the future crop with even ness and precision. The owner of a seventy-thousand-acre farm in Illinois carries on nearly all his work by labor-saving machinery. He drives posts by horse - power; breaks his ground with Comstock's rotary spader; mews, rakes, loads, unloads, and stacks his hay by horse-power; cultivates his corn with two-horse, seated or sulky cultivators; ditches low ground, sows and plants by machinery; so that his labor ers ride in the performance of their tasks without exhaust ing their strength with needless walking over extended fields. This is ofi'ered as evidence that_. Mr Rennie' e principles of agriculture are founded on a profit gaining basis; it also proves that a knowledge of these scientific principles is necessary to the success of any farmer. The author recognized this fact. And his purport in writing this book has been to thoroughly explain in simple language the principles of science as applied to farming. All the ideas set forth in the book may be readily carried out; no impracticable theories are advanced. The article on Alfalfa clover is especially valuable, and should be carefuhy studied by every reader of this book. -the sections on the Restoring and Maintaining of Soil Fertility, the Destruction of Noxious Weeds, the Conservation of Soil Moisture, Shallow Plowing and Crop Rotation are also of special importance.
