Book excerpt: Interest in the study of geometry is currently enjoying a resurgence-understandably so, as the study of curves was once the playground of some very great mathematicians. However, many of the subject's more exciting aspects require a somewhat advanced mathematics background. For the "fun stuff" to be accessible, we need to offer students an introduction with modest prerequisites, one that stimulates their interest and focuses on problem solving. Integrating parametric, algebraic, and projective curves into a single text, Geometry of Curves offers students a unique approach that provides a mathematical structure for solving problems, not just a catalog of theorems. The author begins with the basics, then takes students on a fascinating journey from conics, higher algebraic and transcendental curves, through the properties of parametric curves, the classification of limaçons, envelopes, and finally to projective curves, their relationship to algebraic curves, and their application to asymptotes and boundedness. The uniqueness of this treatment lies in its integration of the different types of curves, its use of analytic methods, and its generous number of examples, exercises, and illustrations. The result is a practical text, almost entirely self-contained, that not only imparts a deeper understanding of the theory, but inspires a heightened appreciation of geometry and interest in more advanced studies.

Book Automated Deduction in Equational Logic and Cubic Curves

Download or read book Automated Deduction in Equational Logic and Cubic Curves written by William McCune and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1996-06-12 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is the result of the cooperation of a mathematician working in universal algebra and geometry, and a computer scientist working in automated deduction, who succeeded in employing the theorem prover Otter for proving first order theorems from mathematics and then intensified their joint effort. Mathematicians will find many new results from equational logic, universal algebra, and algebraic geometry and benefit from the state-of-the-art outline of the capabilities of automated deduction techniques. Computer scientists will find a large and varied source of theorems and problems that will be useful in designing and evaluation automated theorem proving systems and strategies.

This book was released on 2012-08-16 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 4th FTRA International Conference on Information Technology Convergence and Services (ITCS-12) will be held in Gwangju, Korea on September 6 - 8, 2012. The ITCS-12 will be the most comprehensive conference focused on the various aspects of advances in information technology convergence, applications, and services. The ITCS-12 will provide an opportunity for academic and industry professionals to discuss the latest issues and progress in the area of ITCS. In addition, the conference will publish high quality papers which are closely related to the various theories, modeling, and practical applications in ITCS. Furthermore, we expect that the conference and its publications will be a trigger for further related research and technology improvements in this important subject. The ITCS-12 is the next event in a series of highly successful International Conference on Information Technology Convergence and Services(ITCS-11), previously held in Gwangju, Korea on October, 2011.

Book Information Security and Privacy

Download or read book Information Security and Privacy written by Colin Boyd and published by Springer. This book was released on 2009-06-22 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2009 Australasian Conference on Information Security and Privacy was the 14th in an annual series that started in 1996. Over the years ACISP has grown froma relativelysmall conferencewith a largeproportionof paperscoming from Australia into a truly international conference with an established reputation. ACISP 2009 was held at Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, d- ing July 1–3, 2009. This year there were 106 paper submissions and from those 30 papers were accepted for presentation, but one was subsequently withdrawn. Authors of - cepted papers came from 17 countries and 4 continents, illustrating the inter- tional ?avorof ACISP. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to all authors who submitted papers to ACISP 2009. The contributed papers were supplemented by two invited talks from e- nent researchers in information security. Basie von Solms (University of Joh- nesburg), currently President of IFIP, raised the question of how well dressed is the information security king. L. Jean Camp (Indiana University) talked about how to harden the network from the friend within. We are grateful to both of them for sharing their extensive knowledge and setting challenging questions for the ACISP 2009 delegates. We were fortunate to have an energetic team of experts who formed the Program Committee. Their names may be found overleaf, and we thank them warmly for their considerable e?orts. This team was helped by an even larger number of individuals who reviewedpapers in their particularareasof expertise.
