Jankélévitch explica la moral como el horizonte que define la acción de los humanos, argumentando que la pregunta esencial de ¿Quién soy? siempre será seguida por la pregunta ¿Qué debo hacer? La moralidad es comprendida como una segunda naturaleza, ya sea que contribuya a una mejora de las convenciones tradicionales de la sociedad o a un rechazo de ellas. Este planteamiento y otros son desarrollados por Jakélévitch en este curso de filosofía, impartido en 1962 y transcrito por uno de sus estudiantes.
