Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “An extremely valuable original source on Texas history that heretofore has not been available to scholars or the reading public.” —Donald E. Chipman, Professor of History, University of North Texas Texas was already slipping from the grasp of Mexico when Manuel Mier y Terán made his tour of inspection in 1828. American settlers were pouring across the vaguely defined border between Mexico's northernmost province and the United States, along with a host of Indian nations driven off their lands by American expansionism. Terán’s mission was to assess the political situation in Texas while establishing its boundary with the United States. Highly qualified for these tasks as a soldier, scientist, and intellectual, he wrote perhaps the most perceptive account of Texas' people, politics, natural resources, and future prospects during the critical decade of the 1820s. This book contains the full text of Terán’s diary—which has never before been published—edited and annotated by Jack Jackson and translated into English by John Wheat. The introduction and epilogue place the diary in historical context, revealing the significant role that Terán played in setting Mexican policy for Texas between 1828 and 1832.

Book excerpt: Throughout our denomination’s nearly 130-year history, twenty-one general overseers have been selected by its ministers as the denomination’s premier leaders—from A. J. Tomlinson, the first, until Raymond F. Culpepper, whose term ended in 2012. Except for the first three, Dr. Douglas LeRoy has known each of them personally. That places him in a unique position to tell the stories of these officials and reflect on their leadership. He also allows each leader to speak for himself through a sermon selected from his writings. This has been a labor of love for Doug LeRoy, performed over a period of years. He has done well! Let us now learn from our leaders. I am convinced this book will increase our understanding, help us avoid pitfalls, multiply our effectiveness, enhance our endurance, and inspire us. I commend it to your reading. —Mark L. Williams General Overseer, Church of God January 2014

Book The Purpose Driven Church

Download or read book The Purpose Driven Church written by Rick Warren and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2007-09-04 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The issue is church health, not church growth—if your church is healthy, growth will occur naturally. So how do we make healthy churches, driven by purpose? In order for any church to thrive, it must be built around the five New Testament purposes given to the church by Jesus Christ. In this classic of Christian church stability, pastor and bestselling author of The Purpose Driven Life Rick Warren unpacks this proven five-part strategy that will enable your church to grow: Warmer through fellowship. Deeper through discipleship. Stronger through worship. Broader through ministry. Larger through evangelism. Every church is driven by something. Tradition, finances, programs, personalities, events, seekers, and even buildings can each be the controlling force in a church. But Warren will show you how to concentrate on building people and let God build the church. In other words, healthy, consistent growth is the result of balancing the five biblical purposes of the church. And The Purpose Driven Church will show you how to do that. “The Purpose Driven Church has brought focus and direction to more pastors and church leaders than you can count. What a gift!”—John Ortberg, bestselling author.

Book The Mestizo a Community of the Spirit

Download or read book The Mestizo a Community of the Spirit written by Oscar Garcia-Johnson and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work models a creative exercise in ecclesiology based on a Latino/a practical theology of the Spirit, which designs theological discourse based on its encounter with the Spirit in human culture. Hence, it is a theology appreciative of and attentive to the multiple matrices and intersections of the Spirit with cultures. Garc'a-Johnson offeres an appreciative and critical analysis of the uses of culture among Latino/a theologians, followed by the proposal for a postmodern Spirit-friendly cultural paradigm based on the narratives of the cross and the Pentecost. He develops a practical theology for a Latino/a postmodern ecclesiology based on three native Latino/a theological concepts: mestizaje, accompaniment, and ma–ana eschatology. The resulting ecclesial construct-The Mestizo/a Community of Ma–ana-reflects a transforming ma–ana vision and models the visible cruciform community in which the transforming praxis and historical transcendence of the Christ-Spirit works from within. The work sets forth practical guidelines for implementation of the ecclesial construct in the urban context of devastated communities and offers suggestions for further development in Latino/a theology.

Book Nation at Play

  • Publisher : Columbia University Press

Download or read book Nation at Play written by Ronojoy Sen and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2015-10-27 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reaching as far back as ancient times, Ronojoy Sen pairs a novel history of India's engagement with sport and a probing analysis of its cultural and political development under monarchy and colonialism, and as an independent nation. Some sports that originated in India have fallen out of favor, while others, such as cricket, have been adopted and made wholly India's own. Sen's innovative project casts sport less as a natural expression of human competition than as an instructive practice reflecting a unique play with power, morality, aesthetics, identity, and money. Sen follows the transformation of sport from an elite, kingly pastime to a national obsession tied to colonialism, nationalism, and free market liberalization. He pays special attention to two modern phenomena: the dominance of cricket in the Indian consciousness and the chronic failure of a billion-strong nation to compete successfully in international sporting competitions, such as the Olympics. Innovatively incorporating examples from popular media and other unconventional sources, Sen not only captures the political nature of sport in India but also reveals the patterns of patronage, clientage, and institutionalization that have bound this diverse nation together for centuries.

It could be a financial disaster, a health issue, a broken relationship, or the loss of a loved one. Dr. Tony Evans, bestselling author and pastor of Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship, understands life's hardships firsthand. In a span of less than two years, he lost his brother, sister, brother-in-law, two nieces, father, and wife. At the same time, both of his daughters received cancer diagnoses. In the wake of all this pain, Dr. Evans had to put into practice, at the deepest levels, the truths he has preached about God for more than forty years. God's Word doesn't promise us a life free from pain and trouble. It promises us something else—Someone else. Someone who will walk with us through all of life's trials and troubles. There is hope for the hurting: His name is Jesus.
