Book The Legend of Zippy Chippy

Download or read book The Legend of Zippy Chippy written by William Thomas and published by McClelland & Stewart. This book was released on 2016-04-05 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From acclaimed humorist William Thomas comes the funny yet poignant story of a thoroughbred racehorse that lost 100 races in a row -- but, in everyone's eyes, became the ultimate winner. On April 20, 1991, at Capritaur Farms in Upstate New York, Zippy Chippy strolled into the world. He was born from American horse racing royalty -- Compliance (his father was Kentucky Derby-winner Northern Dancer; his great-grandfather Native Dancer, the Preakness and Belmont Stakes winner) and Listen Lady (great-granddaughter of Native Dancer). Even before his birth, the hopes (not to mention the bill for his planned production) for Zippy Chippy were high. His pedigree was horse racing gold: Northern Dancer, Man o' War, Count Fleet, Bold Ruler, War Admiral, and Buckpasser were all ancestors. His success and glory seemed inevitable. But moments after his birth, Zippy Chippy struggled to his feet, took two steps forward . . . and stopped dead in his tracks. He looked around, took in his surroundings, maybe indulged in a little daydream, then promptly lay down for a nap in the straw. And thus began Zippy Chippy's storied racing career. Vince Lombardi, one of the greatest NFL coaches of all time, famously said, "Winning isn't everything, it's the only thing." These words have become the battle cry of athletes, coaches, and teams everywhere, but over the years, sports have taken on a literal interpretation of Lombardi's mantra. Match-fixing, doping, sabotage, cocky and mean sportsmanship, all in the name of winning, have infiltrated and scandalized games, teams, reputations, and newspaper headlines. Yet, since his first moments in the world, Zippy Chippy ignored Lombardi and turned his nose at the concept of winning-at-all-costs. In fact, he decided to not win at all, losing, over the course of his career, 100 consecutive races, at some of the greatest tracks in the country: Belmont Park, Aqueduct, Finger Lakes, and Suffolk Downs among them. And he did so with his owner, Felix Monserrate, by his side -- a man who refused to sell Zippy, or even retire him, simply because he couldn't come in first. Soon, Zippy's cheering squad grew to include people who, enchanted by his story, would travel from all over North America to watch him lose but then happily gallop back to his stable. To them, Zippy Chippy was just like them; someone who wasn't an athlete with a million-dollar contract, or someone with movie star looks -- he was a creature who struggled, who lost, and who failed even the lowest of expectations. But, somehow, he found a way to enjoy himself and eagerly return for the next race. Told with laugh-out-loud wit and a lot of heart, The Legend of Zippy Chippy is the story of the losing-est racehorse in North American history -- a perpetual loser who would become the winning thoroughbred in professional horse racing to steal peoples' hearts.

He searches for the cause of the famous curse, and came to see the curse as a burden but also as a blessing.

Book The Last Chicago Cubs Dynasty

Download or read book The Last Chicago Cubs Dynasty written by Hal Bock and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2016-04-14 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last time the Chicago Cubs played in the World Series, World War II had just ended. The last time they won a World Series, World War I had not yet begun. But from 1906-1910 the Cubs not only played in the World Series four of the five years, they won two World Championships, as well. It was a time when the Cubs ruled baseball, and no one could have imagined the roller coaster adventures that were ahead for this grand old franchise. In The Last Chicago Cubs Dynasty: Before the Curse, Hal Bock tells the story of this legendary team, the characters who were central to its success, and the misfortunes which have plagued the team ever since. Stars such as pitcher Mordecai “Three Finger” Brown and the double-play combination of Tinker to Evers to Chance are profiled, as are opponents who caused the Cubs unending headaches, like superstar pitcher Christy Mathewson and immortal shortstop Honus Wagner. A chronology and cast of characters set the stage for the reader before Bock delves into the early history of the Cubs and the assembly of what would become a dynasty. With talent to spare and just a little bit of luck going their way, the Chicago Cubs were unstoppable. But when an angry fan issued a curse on the team during the 1945 World Series, some believe it marked the beginning of the end for this storied franchise. Featuring 100-year-old images from historic baseball cards, profiles of Hall of Fame legends, and a foreword by Cubs supporter and TV star Joe Mantegna, The Last Chicago Cubs Dynasty will appeal to all baseball fans, but especially to those always-passionate Cubs enthusiasts from around the nation.

Book The Curse Ends The Story of the 2016 Chicago Cubs

Download or read book The Curse Ends The Story of the 2016 Chicago Cubs written by Jeff Attinella and published by It Had To Be Told Publishing, LLC.. This book was released on 2017-09-28 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing up, I was all about sports - football, soccer, baseball, you name it. If it wasn’t sports related, I wasn’t interested. My love for sports is a passion that has shaped my entire life. I am fortunate to play soccer for a living, but it’s bigger than that. My most cherished childhood memories are centered around watching a big game; my relationship with my wife sparked by a mutual love for Penn State football, and my passion for Tampa Bay sports keeps me close to home, even though we’ve moved all over the country. I owe so much of my life to sports. The idea to tell these stories came about after the birth of my daughter, Remy. I wanted to create a vehicle that I could share my love of sports with her, in a way that would hopefully build a bond we’d share forever. Reading together provides a way for parents and their children to share in special moments, but I want these stories to do even more. I want to reach the kids like me, the ones more likely to grab a ball than a book. It is so important for a growing mind to fall in love with reading and I hope these stories can bridge a love for sports with a newfound passion for reading. Mike Pascale (mikepascale.com) is a storyboardist, artist, writer, comic book creator (Bru-Hed), and former award-winning ad agency copywriter/senior art director. Between storyboarding films and drawing this children’s book, he writes and draws the world’s longest-running football webcomic, “Game BUZZ!,” every week at gamebuzzcomic.com. A Californian born and raised in metro Detroit, he had a lot to learn about the Cubs, and found all of it fascinating, frustrating, fun, funny, interesting and incredible. He only hopes he was able to entertain Cubs fans and do justice to their team’s titanic tale—and that we don’t wait another century for their next well-deserved WS win! GO CUBBIES!

Download or read book The Cubs Win It All written by Stanley Phillips and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-11-23 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Cubs Win It All!" - is a revision, which enhances and replaces the original amusing tale presented in the novel "Murphy: Billy Goat Curse." In "The Cubs Win It All!" I again take a fantasy approach in explaining how the curse is actually lifted during the fifth game of the 2016 World Series allowing the Cubs go on to become Baseball's World Champions. "The Cubs Win It All!" Finally the wait is over...after 108 years the Chicago Cubs have been crowned World Series Champs. What fans around the world do not understand is that this event was never supposed to take place. This only comes about because the curse which was placed upon the team decades ago was miraculously lifted during the fifth game of the series. The scourge in question was simply named; "The Billy Goat Curse" which when unraveled becomes a series of misunderstandings, grudges, and blindness. Although there are some who believe they know the truth, the individual who was truly scorned was not Billy Sianis, but it was Murphy the Goat. Thus, this is the reason behind the creation of this story. The Cubs Win IT All! "The Cubs Win It All!" is a fun packed fantasy for all ages born out of the frustrations of Chicago Cubs fans had over the fact their beloved team had not won a World Series since 1908. There are many who feel the main reason for the drought was due to the Billy Goat Curse which came to life in 1945. The so-called curse came to be on October 6, 1945, when Billy Sianis, a well-known Chicago saloon owner brought his pet goat Murphy to the fourth game of that year's World Series. When asked to remove his goat from Wrigley Field, he was insulted. Upon leaving, he uttered the now infamous words, "Them Cubs, they ain't gonna win no more." When Frain's army of ushers heard those words, they contributed the curse to Sianis. However, Murphy was the one who actually put the curse on the Cubs. Seeing he was the one who was insulted, it was only natural. Unbeknownst to the Cubs fans, the only way to break the curse was for someone from the Cubs organization to apologize to Murphy personally. Of course, as of 2016, the biggest problem with that happening is Murphy has been dead for many years. However, in the spirit of "Fair Play," Murphy the Goat, armed with the gift of speech, is forced to return to Earth to lift the curse. Murphy being very persistent, and annoying, has a stipulation. He will lift the curse only if and when he gets his apology. But, Murphy isn't the only one with a stipulation. No one is going to allow him back in to his reward until he lifts the curse. In need of earthly assistance, Murphy goes to the Billy Goat Tavern in Chicago in October, 2016. It is here Murphy is to meet a troubled young man named Daniel Talbert who is supposed to assist him in this endeavor. When they meet Daniel has his own problems. Thus, from the start he has no intention of having a talking goat around especially as the two continue to butt heads. However, his biggest problem is his wife Sara believes he has lost his marbles. Eventually, Murphy and Daniel come to the realization they must change their ways, and join forces in order to arrive at the happy conclusion for all concern. The basic idea of the novel was originally presented in the novel "Murphy: Billy Goat Curse." All it takes to actually make the dream come true is to have the curse lifted. In "The Cubs Win it All!, that is just what happens during the fifth game of the 2016 World Series.

Book Scorecasting

Download or read book Scorecasting written by Tobias Moskowitz and published by Crown. This book was released on 2012-01-17 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Scorecasting, University of Chicago behavioral economist Tobias Moskowitz teams up with veteran Sports Illustrated writer L. Jon Wertheim to overturn some of the most cherished truisms of sports, and reveal the hidden forces that shape how basketball, baseball, football, and hockey games are played, won and lost. Drawing from Moskowitz's original research, as well as studies from fellow economists such as bestselling author Richard Thaler, the authors look at: the influence home-field advantage has on the outcomes of games in all sports and why it exists; the surprising truth about the universally accepted axiom that defense wins championships; the subtle biases that umpires exhibit in calling balls and strikes in key situations; the unintended consequences of referees' tendencies in every sport to "swallow the whistle," and more. Among the insights that Scorecasting reveals: • Why Tiger Woods is prone to the same mistake in high-pressure putting situations that you and I are • Why professional teams routinely overvalue draft picks • The myth of momentum or the "hot hand" in sports, and why so many fans, coaches, and broadcasters fervently subscribe to it • Why NFL coaches rarely go for a first down on fourth-down situations--even when their reluctance to do so reduces their chances of winning. In an engaging narrative that takes us from the putting greens of Augusta to the grid iron of a small parochial high school in Arkansas, Scorecasting will forever change how you view the game, whatever your favorite sport might be.

Book excerpt: The groundbreaking novel from the Pulitzer Prize–winning author of American Pastoral that originally propelled its author to literary stardom: told in a continuous monologue from patient to psychoanalyst, this masterpiece draws us into the turbulent mind of one lust-ridden young Jewish bachelor named Alexander Portnoy. "Deliciously funny...absurd and exuberant, wild and uproarious...a brilliantly vivid reading experience." —The New York Times Book Review "Touching as well as hilariously lewd.... Roth is vibrantly talented." —New York Review of Books Portnoy's Complaint n. [after Alexander Portnoy (1933- )] A disorder in which strongly-felt ethical and altruistic impulses are perpetually warring with extreme sexual longings, often of a perverse nature. Spielvogel says: 'Acts of exhibitionism, voyeurism, fetishism, auto-eroticism and oral coitus are plentiful; as a consequence of the patient's "morality," however, neither fantasy nor act issues in genuine sexual gratification, but rather in overriding feelings of shame and the dread of retribution, particularly in the form of castration.' (Spielvogel, O. "The Puzzled Penis," Internationale Zeitschrift für Psychoanalyse, Vol. XXIV, p. 909.) It is believed by Spielvogel that many of the symptoms can be traced to the bonds obtaining in the mother-child relationship.

Book The Complete Poetry of James Hearst

Download or read book The Complete Poetry of James Hearst written by James Hearst and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part of the regionalist movement that included Grant Wood, Paul Engle, Hamlin Garland, and Jay G. Sigmund, James Hearst helped create what Iowa novelist Ruth Suckow called a poetry of place. A lifelong Iowa farner, Hearst began writing poetry at age nineteen and eventually wrote thirteen books of poems, a novel, short stories, cantatas, and essays, which gained him a devoted following Many of his poems were published in the regionalist periodicals of the time, including the Midland, and by the great regional presses, including Carroll Coleman's Prairie Press. Drawing on his experiences as a farmer, Hearst wrote with a distinct voice of rural life and its joys and conflicts, of his own battles with physical and emotional pain (he was partially paralyzed in a farm accident), and of his own place in the world. His clear eye offered a vision of the midwestern agrarian life that was sympathetic but not sentimental - a people and an art rooted in place.
