Suddenly the police and the university are caught up in a deadly game of cat-and-mouse as they try to stop the killer before another innocent victim dies. Shanicha was born bad. She was born with no compassion, no remorse … completely heartless. The celebrated classicist Robin Lane Fox draws on a lifetime’s knowledge of the ancient world, and on his own travels, answering this question by pursuing it through the age of Homer. His acclaimed history explores how the intrepid seafarers of eighth-century Greece sailed around the Mediterranean, encountering strange new sights—volcanic mountains, vaporous springs, huge prehistoric bones—and weaving them into the myths of gods, monsters and heroes that would become the cornerstone of Western civilization.

Book I II Kings

    Book Details:
  • Author : John Gray
  • Publisher : Westminster John Knox Press
  • Release : 1970
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 850 pages

Download or read book I II Kings written by John Gray and published by Westminster John Knox Press. This book was released on 1970 with total page 850 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A number of factors in recent years have made a new full-scale commentary on Kings a 'must" for scholars and theologians. One of the most important of these is the discovery and publication of the Qumran manuscripts. These in their variants, certain of which support readings in Lucians' recension of the Septuagint, compel a new respect for that text, which because of its tendency to smooth out difficulties had been viewed with considerable suspicion. Moreover, the discovery of the cuneiform texts of Mari and of Ras Shamra has stimulated philological study and borne rich fruit in a fuller understanding of Hebrew. Many suspicious passages in the Masoretic text are now emended in the light of this new knowledge, and many other passages that require no emendation are now more correctly understood. The author takes particular account of the theological interests of Kings as he lays emphasis upon such institutions as prophecy, the king who is the representative of the people before God, and the divine covenant with Israel and the Davidic house. He relates the histories of the surrounding nations, for example, to that of Egypt, which was then on the decline, and to Assyria and Babylon, which were then weak. He correlates them with the narratives of other canonical and noncanonical books. He compares his conclusions with those of other notable scholars, e.g. Von Rad and Noth, who have treated closely associated themes. In his introduction he discusses the authorship and sources of Kings, the probable date of composition (compilation and redaction), the problems of the text, and the chronology of the narrative -- about 400 years, from the death of David to the fall of Jerusalem.

Book The Legend of Shara

  • Author : Srinivas Bharadwaj
  • Publisher : Notion Press
  • Release : 2022-07-12
  • ISBN : 1648506186
  • Pages : 182 pages

Download or read book The Legend of Shara written by Srinivas Bharadwaj and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2022-07-12 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Legend of Shara records the story of a deity from the third millennium BC. It explains how multiple religions, like Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, came to absorb a story well-understood by many followers of Hinduism. We explore the Hindu origins of the early Torah and its deep Puranic roots along with the historical backdrop that produced the Patriarchs, the stories of David, and finally, Exodus. How closely are these stories tied to Puranic equivalents, and why do they follow the same structure and function that we see in Hindu MahaPuranas like the Matsya Purana? From its origins in the Rig Veda, we trace the flow of the legend of Shara along with the rest of its Puranic backdrop into the Hurrian lands. From here, we explore the journey into Judah and its return with the rise of Judaism in the Middle East.
