Featuring comic-style illustrations by Zeke Peña! When you think of Stephen Curry, one word comes to mind: greatness. From shooting three-pointers with laser precision to his clutch ability to hit buzzer-beaters time and again, he has established himself as one of the best players in pro basketball. But greatness was never a guarantee for Steph. The son of a talented NBA player, he dreamed of one day playing professionally just like his dad. Yet Steph, who was always smaller and weaker than the competition, was told over and over that he would never be talented enough to be a college star or NBA player--let alone the MVP of the entire league. Through tenacity and hard work, he proved them all wrong and went on to dismantle the record books. With the high energy of a TV commentator, and featuring dynamic comic-style illustrations, this engaging biography tells the story of an NBA All-Star and the path he took to achieve his dreams. * "Wetzel knows how to organize the facts and tell a good story. . . an unusually informative and enjoyable sports biography for young readers." —Booklist (starred review) A Junior Library Guild selection!

Book excerpt: The #1 national bestseller and inside story of Steph Curry, the greatest shooter basketball has ever seen. Golden is the first book to provide an all-access look at Steph Curry and the team that has fueled Dub Nation—by longtime Warriors beat reporter and Bay Area News Group sports columnist Marcus Thompson, the go-to expert on all things Golden State. A lifelong Warriors fan turned insider Thompson is uniquely qualified to tell the definitive story of a singular talent, pulling back the curtain on the crazy work ethic and on-court intensity that make Curry great—and the emphasis on family and faith that keeps him grounded. Combining the competitive grit and fun-loving spirit of his mother with the mild demeanor, easy charm, and sharp shooting of his father, former NBA player Dell Curry, Steph Curry derives support and strength from his close-knit kin and his commitment to Christianity. This hard-working, wholesome image however is both a blessing and curse in a League of big personalities. Thompson unravels the complicated underpinnings of the Steph Curry hate with a nuanced analysis of how class and complexion come into play when a child with an NBA pedigree becomes the face of a sport traditionally honed on inner-city black top and dominated by the less privileged. With unprecedented access, Thompson draws from exclusive interviews with Steph Curry, his family, his teammates, Coach Steve Kerr, and the Warriors owners to bring readers inside the locker room and courtside with this remarkable athlete and man.

Download or read book Stephen Curry written by Richard Berrington and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-05-02 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wardell Stephen "Steph" Curry born to Dell and Sonya Curry, on the 14th of March, 1988 is an American professional player who plays for the Golden State warriors of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He is 6ft 3inches (1.91) tall, weighing 190lb (86kg). Steph Curry, a point guard for the Golden State Warriors, is considered as one of the greatest shooter in NBA history. It is worthy of note that Steph's Dad played in the NBA for 16 years, but having a parent that plays in the NBA does not necessarily guarantee one would become one at some point, as in the case with Marcus Jordan. Most scouts in college dismissed Curry because of his small stature; he had to work really hard to be selected for college basketball. Steph had a great high school career. However, most of the other great NBA players of today had an even better high school career. Most other NBA stars win state for their high school singlehandedly. Steph led his team to state, but never won a state championship. Steph still had a good enough high school career to go to a division one college. His father went to Virginia Tech, so naturally Steph wanted to follow in his father's footsteps and also go to Virginia Tech. However, Virginia Tech did not offer Steph a scholarship. Steph was offered scholarships to Davidson, VCU, and Winthrop. Steph chose to go to Davidson. Curry played college basketball for Davidson, where he was named twice southern conference player of the year, setting the all time scoring record for both Davidson and southern conference. During His sophomore years he set the single-season NCAA record for the three-pointer made. Curry went on to be drafted by the Golden State Warriors during the 2009 NBA Draft. However because of his recurring injuries, during his first three years he was compared to Grant Hill, whose large potential wasn't fully realized due to being constantly injured very early in his career. Like most of the things in Curry's life, he bounced back and improved tremendously setting records on his way to stardom. With his team mates, especially his close friend Klay Thompson "Splash Brother," the devote Christian and family man has led the Golden State Warriors to relevance once again. The Golden state Warriors success in the NBA is not unconnected to Steph Curry's unstoppable form. Steph has been able to lift the Golden States Warriors with his Characteristic 3 pointers time and time over again. His impact on the team cannot be over emphasized. Stephen Curry has won many honors and awards over his basketball career, but the one that stands out to him the most is winning the 2011 NBA Skills Challenge. This contest puts 6 different elite Point Guards against each other in a race with different passing, shooting, and cutting drills. Stephen Curry loved this award because it showed that he was one of the best Point Guards in the NBA. Wardell Stephen "Steph" Curry is definitely a phenomenon and a rare breed of athlete that combines family life and sports, a rare thing for athletes to do, perfectly.

Book Parker Looks Up

Download or read book Parker Looks Up written by Parker Curry and published by Aladdin. This book was released on 2019-10-15 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times bestseller! A visit to Washington, DC’s National Portrait Gallery forever alters Parker Curry’s young life when she views First Lady Michelle Obama’s portrait. When Parker Curry came face-to-face with Amy Sherald’s transcendent portrait of First Lady Michelle Obama at the National Portrait Gallery, she didn’t just see the First Lady of the United States. She saw a queen—one with dynamic self-assurance, regality, beauty, and truth who captured this young girl’s imagination. When a nearby museum-goer snapped a photo of a mesmerized Parker, it became an internet sensation. Inspired by this visit, Parker, and her mother, Jessica Curry, tell the story of a young girl and her family, whose trip to a museum becomes an extraordinary moment, in a moving picture book. Parker Looks Up follows Parker, along with her baby sister and her mother, and her best friend Gia and Gia’s mother, as they walk the halls of a museum, seeing paintings of everyone and everything from George Washington Carver to Frida Kahlo, exotic flowers to graceful ballerinas. Then, Parker walks by Sherald’s portrait of Michelle Obama…and almost passes it. But she stops...and looks up! Parker saw the possibility and promise, the hopes and dreams of herself in this powerful painting of Michelle Obama. An everyday moment became an extraordinary one…that continues to resonate its power, inspiration, and indelible impact. Because, as Jessica Curry said, “anything is possible regardless of race, class, or gender.” **FOREWORD BY ARTIST AMY SHERALD**

Book Alone

Download or read book Alone written by Bill Jones and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2014-07-31 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The previously-untold story of the life and tragic early death of John Curry, one of the most famous ice skaters in history. The book that inspired new film The Ice King, the story of John Curry's life. One winter's night in 1976, over 20 million people in Britain watched John Curry skate to Olympic gold on an ice rink in Austria. Many millions more watched around the world. Overnight he became one of the most famous men on the planet. He was awarded an OBE. He was chosen as BBC Sports Personality of the Year. Curry changed ice skating from marginal sport to high art. And yet the man was a mystery to a world that had been dazzled by his gift. Surely, men's skating was supposed to be Cossack-muscular, not sensual and ambiguous like this? Curry himself was a complex, tortured man. For the first time, Alone untangles the extraordinary web of his toxic, troubled, brilliant and short life. It is a story of childhood nightmares, furious ambition, sporting genius, lifelong rivalries, homophobia, Cold War politics, financial ruin and deep personal tragedy. So much more than a sports biography, Alone reveals the restless, impatient, often dark soul of a man whose words could lacerate, whose skating invariably moved audiences to tears, and who after succumbing to AIDS, as so many of his fellow artists and friends did, died of a heart attack aged just 44.
