The purpose of aesthetic education is to help students experience the joy of beauty. To develop a program of aesthetic education, the stages of aesthetic development that a person goes through must be taken into consideration. Although individuals of the same age may be at different stages of development, all experience three facets of aesthetic awareness. They are performer, appreciator, and critic. These three stages provide a framework for developing a program of aesthetic education, no matter what the subject area the learner is studying. Through the work of various funding agencies, both public and private, many programs are now having an impact on the arts in the schools. For example, CEMREL, one of the regional educational laboratories located in St. Louis, has contributed a long-range curriculum development program for the arts in the elementary grades. The Utica School District in New York has instituted a pilot project called SEARCH in which film makers and poets worked both as artists in residence and as learning resources to teachers. If schools are to contribute to improving the quality of life of students, more attention must be given to the preparation of teachers in aesthetic education. (Author/RM)

Detels indicates that the marginalization of the arts and aesthetics in American education has been caused by a hard-boundaried paradigm that has come to dominate American education. According to this paradigm, the arts are wrongly viewed and taught as separate, unconnected disciplines of music, visual arts, dance, and theater, while their intimate connections to each other and to aesthetic experience and life in general are completely unrepresented. The way out of this crisis is to change paradigms, from a hard-boundaried, single-minded valuation of specialization to a more soft-boundaried curriculum that allows for specialized education in individual art forms as well as widespread interdisciplinary integration of the arts with each other and with general education at the K-12 and college levels. Without such a change, we will be unable to equip our students with the necessary skills to understand and communicate about the increasingly complex, sensually immersive artistic media and forms of the future.

Few studies address the concept of aesthetics and hermeneutical context in American classroom management and classroom life, and Attwood pinpoints and traces the medieval social concept of chivalry through the centuries and argues it has manifested itself in classroom social construction in the twenty-first century.
