Book Current Developments in Clay and Clay Products

Download or read book Current Developments in Clay and Clay Products written by Illinois State Geological Survey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-05 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Current Developments in Clay and Clay Products: Extract of the Contributions of the Fifth Annual Illinois Mineral Industries Conference One of the important pieces of work being done in European laboratories is the mineralogical analysis of all types of clays with these new techniques. Here In Illinois we are carrying on similar work In our attempt to catalog completely the kinds of clays we have in the State and the types of clay which may be used in various industries and which are not now produced in Illinois. The exact procedure used in making these mineral analyses is not the same in all laboratories. In Germany it is generally felt that X-ray analyses alone are sufficient to determine the mineral composition of clays. Here we are of the opinion that a satisfactory determination of the mineral composition of clays and Shales can only be gained by X - ray, optical and chemical analyses. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structural clay products have had a place in the history of civilization like bread and cloth. Probably because the industry has been so commonplace in the lives of people, 1ittle has been written about it; even the history of its development is sketchy. There is no other book quite like this in publication at present, and it is prompted now because much general scientific knowledge can be, and is, applied to the manufacture of structural clay products. This book is an attempt to bring together in one place the basic sciences that can be useful in all of the processes and experiences of the clayworker. This volume was written primarily as a text to be used in courses for third and fourth year college students; however, there will be a broader interest in it by industrial foremen, engineers, architects, and scientists employed in the manu facture, research and use of structural clay products. It will also be a source of general information for those interested in entering the field. The treatment of the basic principles of clay products manufacturing and use is so general that even those interested in refractories, whitewares, and pottery may find many parts useful to them.

Book excerpt: An interdisciplinary account of the environmental history and changing landscape of New York City. In this innovative account of the urbanization of nature in New York City, Matthew Gandy explores how the raw materials of nature have been reworked to produce a "metropolitan nature" distinct from the forms of nature experienced by early settlers. The book traces five broad developments: the expansion and redefinition of public space, the construction of landscaped highways, the creation of a modern water supply system, the radical environmental politics of the barrio in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and the contemporary politics of the environmental justice movement. Drawing on political economy, environmental studies, social theory, cultural theory, and architecture, Gandy shows how New York's environmental history is bound up not only with the upstate landscapes that stretch beyond the city's political boundaries but also with more distant places that reflect the nation's colonial and imperial legacies. Using the shifting meaning of nature under urbanization as a framework, he looks at how modern nature has been produced through interrelated transformations ranging from new water technologies to changing fashions in landscape design. Throughout, he considers the economic and ideological forces that underlie phenomena as diverse as the location of parks and the social stigma of dirty neighborhoods.

This book was released on 2018-04-30 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Clay and Clay Products Sessions: Abstract Reports of General Session, Forum on Researches in Progress, and Symposium on Needed Researches The general session was under the chairmanship of Dean M. L. Enger of the Engineering Experiment Station of the University of Illinois. After welcoming the guests he introduced Dr. M. M. Leighton, Chief of the State Geological Survey, who outlined the Ob jectives of the conference. Dr. Leighton pointed out that prosperity in our early his tory rested upon the exploration and development of the country's untouched resources, whereas now it rests upon Scientific discover ies and technologic developments of new and improved uses of these Same basic resources. The new viewpoint given us by science_is that we Should make a complete inventory of our many types of resources by thoroughgoing investigations and then show that their constitu tion, composition, and properties are such that they can be trans formed in various ways into ever increasingly useful products. The commonwealth that will make available this kind of information will make more profitable use of its resources, will be better able to meet competitive conditions, will create more industrial Opportuni ties, will provide more widespread employment and will lay the soundest of foundations for prosperity and happiness of its people.
