Book excerpt: The inspiration for the 2016 Sundance Film Festival documentary, NUTS!. “An extraordinary saga of the most dangerous quack of all time...entrancing” –USA Today In 1917, John R. Brinkley–America’s most brazen con man–introduced an outlandish surgical method for restoring fading male virility. It was all nonsense, but thousands of eager customers quickly made “Dr.” Brinkley one of America’s richest men–and a national celebrity. The great quack buster Morris Fishbein vowed to put the country’ s “most daring and dangerous” charlatan out of business, yet each effort seemed only to spur Brinkley to new heights of ingenuity, and the worlds of advertising, broadcasting, and politics soon proved to be equally fertile grounds for his potent brand of flimflam. Culminating in a decisive courtroom confrontation, Charlatan is a marvelous portrait of a boundlessly audacious rogue on the loose in an America ripe for the bamboozling.

Book excerpt: Vienna 1777, Maria-Theresa Paradies, a gift blind young pianist, has been sent to Doctor Mesmer in the hope that his unorthodox methods will cure her blindness where conventional medicine has failed. Mesmer's treatment is based on what he terms "animal-magnetism", a spirit of fluid which he believes he is capable of transferring to other people to restore physical and mental harmony. To the disquiet of her parents, he insists that Maria stays in his house for the duration of the treatment. Maria's sight is restored, but it is not long before the coffee house gossips read more into his relationship with Maria than that of doctor and patient, and the treatment ends in scandal and fiasco, with most of Vienna convinced that Mesmer is nothing more than charlatan. Unable to see once again, Maria returns to her.

It can show real cures, both undeniable and numerous, in spite of the vast number that may not bear scrutiny. This the physician cannot, alas! deny, though he Quack may deplore it. After allowing full discount for arenot" forged and false testimonials (which are not so "rt78 numerous as supposed), for purely imaginary diseases and the credulity of mankind, and even for the lesser functional disorders, there remains behind a large residuum that cannot by any ingenuity be explained away. At any rate, the public believes it has suffered from some disease, say, rheumatism, for which, in the ordinary course and the absence of the quack, it would have gone to the nearest doctor; with the result of a possible more or less tardy cure, and the certainty of a considerable bill. Whereas now, the purchase for 7&. or Is. l d. of a small bottle of something in a wrapper black with testimonials has already given relief, maybe even before it has been taken, on the mere reading of the wonderful cures effected. The ignorant charlatan may thus effect with his shallow mysteries what a great physician cannot do with his science, because wonder and awe have a greater therapeutic power than respect. In this case, of course, the remedies used on both sides are regarded as inert; and yet we believe it is true that many of our most useful medicines have been discovered by quacks. Now it is quite possible that no one is more surprised as well as pleased at the cures than the quack vendor of the same; and it is not for him to deny what he cannot account for, as the doctor is often tempted to do, because his interest is to magnify cures, which he promptly does. Pseudo-It is therefore doubtless true that, in spite of all...

Book The Trouble with Doctors

Download or read book The Trouble with Doctors written by Dr. John Anderson and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2022-01-10 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book arose from the authors knowledge of a small number of doctors who were not behaving in a professional or proper manner. As he read about them, he found he was astonished at the extent of some offenders. Any human being can have flaws in their character, personality disorders or mental illnesses, what if that person is your doctor? This book takes the reader on a journey from the colorful life of Geoffrey Edelsten through Medawar's The Strange Case of the Spotted Mice, a fertility specialist who used his own sperm to impregnate over 50 women without their knowledge to the lasting and devastating effects of the MMR vaccine debacle. The author suggests that a test needs to be devised to detect character flaws such as greed before they harm innocent people through fraud and deceit. As much a reference book as it is a celebration of the brave‘whistleblower’and witty commentary on human nature, capturing the imagination, leading the reader to wonder why people make the decisions they do. Anderson himself had a colorful life and a brilliant career, leaving an immeasurable legacy to medicine. His wish was that this book would prompt change, leading to enhanced integrity in the medical and scientific world.

  • Author : Eric W. Boyle
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing USA

Download or read book Quack Medicine written by Eric W. Boyle and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2013-01-09 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This timely volume illustrates how and why the fight against quackery in modern America has largely failed, laying the blame on an unlikely confluence of scientific advances, regulatory reforms, changes in the medical profession, and the politics of consumption. Throughout the 20th century, anti-quackery crusaders investigated, exposed, and attempted to regulate allegedly fraudulent therapeutic approaches to health and healing under the banner of consumer protection and a commitment to medical science. Quack Medicine: A History of Combating Health Fraud in Twentieth-Century America reveals how efforts to establish an exact border between quackery and legitimate therapeutic practices and medications have largely failed, and details the reasons for this failure. Digging beneath the surface, the book uncovers the history of allegedly fraudulent therapies including pain medications, obesity and asthma cures, gastrointestinal remedies, virility treatments, and panaceas for diseases such as arthritis, asthma, diabetes, and HIV/AIDS. It shows how efforts to combat alleged medical quackery have been connected to broader debates among medical professionals, scientists, legislators, businesses, and consumers, and it exposes the competing professional, economic, and political priorities that have encouraged the drawing of arbitrary, vaguely defined boundaries between good medicine and "quack medicine."

Book SCAM

  • Author : Edzard Ernst
  • Publisher : Andrews UK Limited
  • Release : 2018-06-22
  • ISBN : 1845409833
  • Pages : 132 pages

Download or read book SCAM written by Edzard Ernst and published by Andrews UK Limited. This book was released on 2018-06-22 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: So-called alternative medicine (SCAM) is popular and therefore important, no matter whether we love or loathe it. Consequently, an impressive number of books about SCAM are already available. Most of them, however, are woefully uncritical, overtly promotional and dangerously misleading. Not so this one! This book was written by someone who received SCAM as a patient, practised SCAM as a doctor, and researched SCAM as a scientist. It provides an insider's perspective by covering aspects of SCAM which most other books avoid, and by questioning the many tacitly accepted assumptions and wild extrapolations that underpin SCAM. The text is factual, occasionally dosed with a touch of humour or satire. The aim is not only to inform but also to entertain. It is written principally for members of the general public who have an interest in healthcare and are tired of the promotional counter-knowledge produced by SCAM enthusiasts. It is an exercise in critical thinking that might prevent you from wasting your money on (or endangering your health with) bogus treatments.
