Download or read book In Vitro Culture of Trees written by J.M. Bonga and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Woody plants provide many challenges to the tissue culturist. Although there are many excellent tissue culture books and manuals available, these are generally strongly biased towards herbacious crops. Consequently, they often do not pay sufficient attention to the problems that specifically apply to in vitro culture of tree species. Culture of the latter often poses problems which are either absent or of lesser significance when culturing herbacious species. When trees in the field are used as explant source, the problems can be especially severe. For example, the physiological condition of the explants is difficult to control because of variation in weather and biotic factors. Furthermore, it is often difficult to obtain explants free of contaminants from field grown trees. Lack of genetic uniformity and maturation are additional problems one often has to deal with when culturing tree cells or tissues. These problems are emphasized in this text. In vitro culture of trees is not viewed in isolation. It is considered in conjunction with breeding, traditional cloning and other common tree improvement techniques. The text discusses theoretical as well as practical aspects of the in vitro culture of trees.

Book Plant Tissue Culture

Download or read book Plant Tissue Culture written by Bozzano G Luisa and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant Tissue Culture: Methods and Applications in Agriculture contains the proceedings of a symposium based on the UNESCO training course on Plant Tissue Culture: Methods and Applications in Agriculture, sponsored by UNESCO and held in Campinas, Sao Paulo, Brazil, on November 8-22, 1978. This book contains two major sections encompassing plant tissue culture: Part A, which focuses on methodology, and Part B, which emphasizes the applications. The first chapters present the requirements for a tissue culture facility, and then describe nutrition, media, and characteristics of cultured plant cells and their growth and behavior in vitro, particularly with reference to embryogenesis and organogenesis. Discussions on protoplasts, mutagenesis and in vitro selection, meristem culture, freeze preservation, and cytogenetic techniques complete Part A. In Part B, androgenesis, in vitro fertilization, and embryo culture are discussed. Some chapters follow on the application of in vitro methodology to selected crops. The final chapter deals with the potential of tissue culture in the biosynthesis of secondary products. This text will prove useful to those who must thoroughly plan their research in tackling problems in agriculture that are amenable to the tissue culture approach.

Book Micropropagation of Woody Plants

Download or read book Micropropagation of Woody Plants written by M.R. Ahuja and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume covers recent advances in the vegetative propagation of woody plants by tissue culture. A wide range of topics relevant to micropropagation of woody plants are discussed by renowned international scientists. These include cellular contro of morphogenesis, light regimes in tissue culture, maturation and rejuvenation, synthetic seed, genetics of micropropagated plants, haploid embryogenesis, protoplast culture, and acclimatization of ex vitro woody plants. In addition to micropropagation of selected woody plants, both gymnosperms and angiosperms, this volume also includes in vitro genetic selection, strategic planning for application of biotechnology for genetics and breeding, and clonal options for woody plant improvement. A balanced view of both perspectives and limitations of woody plant micropropagation is presented.

Book Applied and Fundamental Aspects of Plant Cell Tissue and Organ Culture

Download or read book Applied and Fundamental Aspects of Plant Cell Tissue and Organ Culture written by Jakob Reinert and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 810 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Progress in the field of plant cell and tissue culture has made this area of research one of the most dynamic and promising not only in plant physiology, cell biology and genetics but also in agriculture, forestry, horticulture and industry. Studies with plant cell cultures clearly have bearing upon a variety of problems as yet unsolved in basic and applied research. This was the compelling reason for assembling such a comprehensive source of information to stimulate students, teachers, and research workers. This book comprises 34 articles on regeneration of plants, vegetative propagation and cloning; haploids; cytology, cytogenetics and plant breeding; protoplasts, somatic hybridization and genetic engineering; plant pathology; secondary products and a chapter on isoenzymes, radiobiology, and cryobiology of plant cells. Particular attention has been paid to modern , fast-growing and fascinating disciplines - e.g. the induction of haploids, somatic hybridization and genetic manipulation by protoplast culture, which possess an enormous potential for plant improvement.
