Book excerpt: The present study compared reports of perceived parenting style of mothers and fathers from predominantly White-American (n = 276) college students in the United States and Indian college students in India (n = 195). This study investigated whether cultural group identification moderated the relationship between perceived parenting style and college students' interpersonal/family and academic/career functioning. Results indicated that Indian females were most likely to perceive their mothers and fathers as authoritative, followed by U.S. males and females, followed by Indian males. Indian males were most likely to perceive their mothers as authoritarian, followed by U.S. males and females, followed by Indian females. Perceived authoritative parenting was inversely associated with interpersonal and academic problems for Indian and U.S. college students, while perceived authoritarian parenting was positively associated with interpersonal and academic problems in both samples. Culture did not serve as a moderator for perceived parenting style and interpersonal or academic problems.

Book excerpt: The purpose of the study was to determine and compare the frequency of self-destructive behaviors among Third Culture Kids (TCKs, those who spent a portion of their developmental years in a culture different than their parents) and non-TCKs, and to explore possible differences in the frequency of self-destructive behavior engagement among parenting styles. It was hypothesized that self-destructive behaviors would be more common among TCKs than non-TCKS. It was also hypothesized that among TCKs and non-TCKs who endorsed that their mothers raised them using authoritarian, permissive, and neglectful parenting styles would be more likely to report engagement in self-destructive behaviors than those who endorsed that their mothers raised them using the authoritative parenting style. Additionally, it was hypothesized that among TCKs who perceived that their fathers raised them using the permissive parenting style would be more likely to report engagement in self-destructive behaviors than those who perceived that their fathers raised them using the authoritative parenting style. Data was collected from 331 participants through an online questionnaire including concepts from the Risk-Taking and Self-Harm Questionnaire (Vrouva, Fonagy, Fearon, & Roussow, 2010), parenting styles (Baumrind 1996), and demographics. The results of the study showed that there is no difference in the frequency of engagement in self-destructive behaviors among TCKs and non-TCKs; however, there are indeed differences in the frequency of engagement in self-destructive behaviors among TCKs and non-TCKs who reported having experienced different parenting styles. -- Keywords: Self-destructive behaviors; Third Culture Kids; Global Nomads; Parenting Styles; Adjustment.
