Book Chile Culture Smart

Download or read book Chile Culture Smart written by Caterina Perrone and published by Kuperard. This book was released on 2017-09-01 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chile is a land of contrast and surprise, flanked by the Pacific Ocean on the west, the Andes to the east, the forbidding salt basins of the Atacama Desert to the north—with a verdant Central Valley and Cape Horn at its southern extremity. The Chilean people, too, are surprising: on one hand reserved, family-oriented, Catholic, and conservative; and on the other fun-loving, entrepreneurial, neoliberal, and modern. Their geographical isolation from the rest of the world, their colonial past, and the near 20years of repression under the military dictatorship of General Pinochet have had a profound influence on their character. Today, traditional Chilean values are being questioned by the younger generation. In fact, the country's position as the Latin American stronghold of Catholicism is being challenged by Chileans of all generations, and pressure has led to unprecedented changes in family and censorship law. Chile is also one of the fastest-growing economies in South America, and thanks to ambitious structural reforms, has sharply reduced its poverty rate in the past few years. Culture Smart! Chile provides vital information on what to expect and how to behave in this complex and dynamic society.

Book excerpt: First published in 1991. An implicit thesis of this volume is that popular culture in Chile is more than the total of many individual biographies. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The islands of Chiloé, in southern Chile, have developed a distinct culture over several centuries, blending indigenous traditions and Spanish settler heritage to create a vibrant pattern of folklore, music, dance, and related creative practices. This cultural heritage has become an important aspect of the islands’ identity and is key to their successful marketing as a tourist destination. However, these elements exist in tension with new developments, most particularly the introduction of salmon aquaculture, which has disrupted traditional livelihood patterns and polluted the region’s marine environment. This volume analyzes the development of the islands’ distinct culture with a particular focus on music and dance. Key topics include the relation of tradition and modernity, the impact of tourism on cultural practice, and the relationship between social activism and music culture. The authors complement this focus with a discussion of their own creative engagements with the region through the production of the music album Viaje a Chiloé (2018) and through the work of the audiovisual ensemble The Moviolas (in 2015–2018).

Book excerpt: Rich and interesting, the history of Chile prior to the arrival of the Spanish Conquistadors offers an insight into the lives and cultures of the indigenous peoples who inhabited the territory for thousands of years before Europeans arrived. The Mapuche people were historically the largest and most dominant indigenous community in Chile; furthermore, the culture and traditions of the Mapuche people continue to play an important part in contemporary Chilean society. Before the arrival of the Spanish, Chile was home to a number of different indigenous peoples and cultures. One of them was the Mapuche, but there were others as well. The most important of these was the Inca Empire, which controlled much of what is now known as northern Chile and had a huge influence on the history and culture of that region. Other indigenous civilizations, such as the Aymara and the Atacameo, also left their influence on Chilean history and continue to be remembered and cherished in modern day Chile. This is especially true of the city of Santiago. Indigenous peoples of Chile were recognized for their sophisticated agricultural methods, expert craftsmanship, and spiritual beliefs. They lived in small villages spread out across the country and were famed for their seclusion. Despite the fact that they lived in relative seclusion, the indigenous people of Chile maintained a sophisticated trading network, which enabled them to engage in cultural and economic interaction with other communities across South America. The entrance of Spanish Conquistadors in the 16th century marked the beginning of a new chapter in the history of Chile. During this time, the indigenous peoples of Chile were gradually integrated into the Spanish colony, and as a result, their cultures and customs were changed irrevocably. In spite of this, indigenous peoples continue to have an impact on contemporary Chilean culture, and their contributions to the history and heritage of the country are honored and recognized.
