Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication is the revised edition of the Cued Articulation range. The previously separate titles Cued Articulation and Cued Vowels are now combined and updated, with this edition covering consonants, vowels, demonstrative images, and full color coding throughout. The book was originally devised to help severely speech and language handicapped children to see a sound and hear a letter by the use of easy and logical hand cues. The Cued Articulation system has, over the last three decades, proved to be an invaluable teaching tool. Its potential and practicality is widespread and utilized by speech pathologists, speech and language therapists, remedial and reading recovery teachers who find the approach helpful in showing phoneme-grapheme relationships, and primary teachers who use it in the classroom to teach children the sounds of speech. Teachers who teach correct pronunciation to those who have English as a second language also find it extremely useful, as do teachers of the hearing impaired who want their students to see the sounds they cannot hear. Also available to compliment the book is an instructional, interactive DVD (# 9780864319180), which includes demonstrations of the cues and sounds.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jane Passyâ??s highly successful technique first came about through her work with children with severe speech and language disorders. Each of the 49 sounds (phonemes) that make up the English phonological system has a separate hand sign â?? related to where and how, in the mouth, the sound is made. The signs are logical and based on sound linguistic theory. The consonant sounds are colour-coded as an extra visual cue when doing written work. Cued Articulation and Cued Vowels are two companion texts written by Jane Passy to help teach the pronunciation of spoken English. Cued Articulation describes how to cue consonant sounds while Cued Vowels describes the 23 standard English vowel sounds.

Book excerpt: Combining coverage of the key concepts and tools within phonetics and phonology with a systematic introduction to Praat, this textbook provides a lively and engaging 'way in' to the discipline. The author first covers the fundamentals of the articulatory and acoustic aspects of speech and introduces Praat as the main tool for examining and visualising speech. Next, the unit of analysis is gradually expanded (from syllables to words to turns and dialogues) and excerpts of real dialogues exemplify the core concepts for discovering how speech works. The final part of the book brings all the concepts and notions together with commentaries to the transcription of several short excerpts of dialogues. This book will be essential reading for students on undergraduate courses in phonetics and phonology.

Book Rehabilitation of Spoken Word Production in Aphasia

Download or read book Rehabilitation of Spoken Word Production in Aphasia written by Lyndsey Nickels and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume focuses on the remediation of impairments of word production in aphasia. It is restricted to studies focusing on single word production and comprises papers by some of the researchers most active in this field worldwide. The scope of the papers is broad and includes many relatively under-researched areas and techniques. All the papers have in common a methodological rigour and the use of a single case or case-series approach. A range of treatment tasks are evaluated: 'phonological' tasks such as phonological cueing and word repetition, and judgements regarding the phonological form; 'orthographic' tasks such as orthographic cueing, word reading and writing to dictation; 'semantic' tasks such as semantic cueing; the use of gesture; computer presentation of tasks and even just repeated attempts at naming. In addition, the individuals treated using these techniques varied in the nature of their impairments and/or level of impairment that was targeted. The majority aimed to improve word retrieval generally, but one treatment was aimed specifically at verb retrieval, and another at improving accuracy of word production for an individual with a phonological encoding impairment. Each paper relates the outcome of treatment to theoretical accounts of impairment, and one explicitly uses the results of therapy to inform these theories. Taken together these papers provide a snapshot of the 'state of the art' in the rehabilitation of word production in aphasia.
