Book Cue Utilization and Dimensional Preferendes in the Hooded Rat

Download or read book Cue Utilization and Dimensional Preferendes in the Hooded Rat written by Gerald Leonard Boerner and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Visual problem-solving is studied in the rat. Five male, hooded rats were trained to differentially respond to one of two compound visual stimuli by differential reinforcement (VI-45 sec. vs. EXT.) The stimuli differed from each other on the basis of three dimensions: brightness, orientation, and size. The cue utilized in forming the complex operant discrimination were evaluated by tests of stimulus generalization after 28 and 32 days of training. The generalization tests presented 14 generalization stimuli, 5 stimuli on each of the three dimensions; one stimulus was common to the orthogonal dimensions. Stimulus control was obtained by the complex S= stimulus, as reflected in the ratio of S-/S+ responses approaching zero. The analysis of generalization responding to the orthogonal dimensions indicated the following: (1) stimulus control was exerted within each dimension on the first generalization test. (2) Stimulus control was exerted within the brightness dimension alone during the second generalization test. (3) There was an interaction between the generalization test (as an index of extinction) and the presence of stimulus control within a dimension. (4) The brightness dimension dominated the control of responding during both generalization tests, and (5) measures of response frequency and response latency yielded essentially the same results. The data presented are best described by the multiplicative model. In addition, the present results are consistent with the formulations of Mackintosh and Sutherland (1964) and Southerland and Holgats (1966).

Book The Cambridge Handbook of Animal Cognition

Download or read book The Cambridge Handbook of Animal Cognition written by Allison B. Kaufman and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-07-22 with total page 1032 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook lays out the science behind how animals think, remember, create, calculate, and remember. It provides concise overviews on major areas of study such as animal communication and language, memory and recall, social cognition, social learning and teaching, numerical and quantitative abilities, as well as innovation and problem solving. The chapters also explore more nuanced topics in greater detail, showing how the research was conducted and how it can be used for further study. The authors range from academics working in renowned university departments to those from research institutions and practitioners in zoos. The volume encompasses a wide variety of species, ensuring the breadth of the field is explored.

Book Beyond the Cognitive Map

Download or read book Beyond the Cognitive Map written by A. David Redish and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are currently two major theories about the role of the hippocampus, a distinctive structure in the back of the temporal lobe. One says that it stores a cognitive map, the other that it is a key locus for the temporary storage of episodic memories. A. David Redish takes the approach that understanding the role of the hippocampus in space will make it possible to address its role in less easily quantifiable areas such as memory. Basing his investigation on the study of rodent navigation--one of the primary domains for understanding information processing in the brain--he places the hippocampus in its anatomical context as part of a greater functional system. Redish draws on the extensive experimental and theoretical work of the last 100 years to paint a coherent picture of rodent navigation. His presentation encompasses multiple levels of analysis, from single-unit recording results to behavioral tasks to computational modeling. From this foundation, he proposes a novel understanding of the role of the hippocampus in rodents that can shed light on the role of the hippocampus in primates, explaining data from primate studies and human neurology. The book will be of interest not only to neuroscientists and psychologists, but also to researchers in computer science, robotics, artificial intelligence, and artificial life.

Book Curiosity and Information Seeking in Animal and Human Behavior

Download or read book Curiosity and Information Seeking in Animal and Human Behavior written by Wojciech Pisula and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2020-06-01 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the book is to deliver a critical review of the literature and author's research data relevant for understanding the phenomena of curiosity, information seeking behavior, and novelty seeking. The book is designed to be a comprehensive and systematic lecture of areas related to the main subject in a way that will enable the reader to grasp the notion of development in terms of the evolutionary time scale and ontogenesis. Each of the subjects is explained on the basis of three perspectives: ultimate factors, integrative levels, and proximate mechanisms. This work is intended to integrate approaches adopted within psychology, ethology, and behavioral neuroscience. The major uniqueness is related to the integrative levels framework, which is not very often utilized the the contemporary books on the subject. This is why the book offers holistic, complete presentation of the area that it does cover. It should be of interests of students of psychology, animal behavior, as well teachers and educators. It provides refreshing cues for creative thinking about human curiosity. The present edition includes new data and the discussion of the new literature on the subject.
