This book traces the evolution of large business enterprises in Australia, from the giants of the nineteenth century - such as Dalgety's, CSR and BHP - to the contemporary leaders in Newscorp and Qantas. It delves into why the market leaders became the major players, examines what was crucial to their success, and their roles in leading the Australian economy. By investigating their evolution this book provides a useful evaluation of the factors that have led to their competitive success and provides an essential guide for all businesses in Australia and beyond.

Book The Dynamics of Corporate Social Responsibility

Download or read book The Dynamics of Corporate Social Responsibility written by Maria Aluchna and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-12-27 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores recent developments in the theory, strategic perspective and international practice of corporate social responsibility. In particular it discusses the consequences of the economic slowdown apparent in many economies and the impact of changes in the regulatory environment. It consists of three parts: Part one addresses a variety of theoretical approaches as well as the dynamics and criticism of corporate social responsibility. It takes into account social and governmental expectations for the new and extended role of companies in the economy and in society, and provides a new context and theoretical assumptions regarding the functions and tasks of corporate social responsibility. Part two discusses the practical aspects relating to strategic management and corporate governance, corporate disclosure and reporting, as well as the empowerment of stakeholders. Lastly, part three focuses on the international practice of corporate social responsibility in various organizational and institutional settings. Using numerous case studies, the book explores the challenges and tasks of CSR in emerging markets, in the fashion industry and in global and family companies. It identifies the changes that can be detected following the financial crisis, closing the loop and linking the empirical findings with the revised theoretical framework.

Download or read book Hunting the Collectors written by Susan Cochrane and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2013-04-24 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume investigates Pacific collections held in Australian museums, art galleries and archives, and the diverse group of 19th and 20th century collectors responsible for their acquisition. The nineteen essays reveal varied personal and institutional motivations that eventually led to the conservation, preservation and exhibition in Australia of a remarkable archive of Pacific Island material objects, art and crafts, photographs and documents. Hunting the Collectors benchmarks the importance of Pacific Collections in Australia and is a timely contribution to the worldwide renaissance of interest in Oceanic arts and cultures. The essays suggest that the custodial role is not fixed and immutable but fluctuates with the perceived importance of the collection, which in turn fluctuates with the level of national interest in the Pacific neighbourhood. This cyclical rise and fall of Australian interest in the Pacific Islands means many of the valuable early collections in state and later national repositories and institutions have been rarely exhibited or published. But, as the authors note, enthusiastic museum anthropologists, curators, collection managers and university-based scholars across Australia, and worldwide, have persisted with research on material collected in the Pacific.

Book The Devil Is in the Details Analysis of Substantial Market Power in Fijian Markets

Download or read book The Devil Is in the Details Analysis of Substantial Market Power in Fijian Markets written by Releshni Karan Reddy and published by Scientific Research Publishing, Inc. USA. This book was released on 2022-07-13 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fiji, being remotely located with a small population, does not attract many players to its economy. Fewer players with large market shares coupled with high barriers to entry allow firms with substantial market power (“SMP”) to form. This research aims to explore the existence of SMP amongst selected markets and the adequacy of Fiji’s regulatory law, which is inspired by the US and EU competition regulation models. Based on the analysis of competition cases and in-depth interviews with members of the Fijian competition authority, the research examines how FCCC has dealt with the issues of testing SMP in relevant markets. Three industries were randomly selected as case studies. These were the telecommunications industry, shipping industry and the LPG industry. SMP was tested using a three-stage test. Stage One was choosing the relevant market and Stage Two was analysing the market conditions such as market shares of players and barriers to entry. Stage Three was analysing whether the player could maintain its price independently of its consumers and competitors. If Stages Two and Three was affirmative in respect of Stage One, SMP was held to exist. Legislation was closely examined to identify and verify the test of firms holding SMP. The results show existence of firms holding SMP in the chosen markets in telecommunications, shipping and LPG sectors. Competition legislation in Fiji does not limit the mere existence of SMP but punishes abuse of its SMP. The results identify the ways in which the authority seeks to adjust its competition system to the particularities of a small developing country, in terms of legislation, economy, culture and institutional framework. The existing legislation needs to be reformed to include provisions identifying tests for SMP. The study reveals inconsistencies between the formal provisions of the competition law and the manner in which it is applied and advances recommendations for improvement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sugar as a global commodity has shaped our world, impacting cultures and influencing cuisine. The heritage of sugar is investigated in the context of globalization and tourism development. Facets of the sugar story include colonization, enslavement, decolonization and postcolonial tourism while cultural practices traced to sugar include carnival and confectionery as souvenirs. However, what happens where sugar is still produced, where production is in decline, or where the country has exited from producing? How is sugar engrained in national identities and how does this influence tourism? From the perspectives of contributing authors, destination examples include Brazil, India, Taiwan, New Zealand, Australia, Barbados, Cuba, Dominican Republic, St. Lucia, and St. Kitts. This is the first work examining sugar heritage in relation to tourism from a global perspective, identifying related tourism directions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main purpose of the British Documents on the End of Empire Project (BDEEP) is to publish documents from British official archives on the ending of colonial and associated rule and on the context in which this took place. The Republic of the Fiji Islands, is an island nation in the South Pacific Ocean, east of Vanuatu, west of Tonga and south of Tuvalu. The country occupies an archipelago of about 322 islands, of which 106 are permanently inhabited; in addition, there are some 522 islets. The islands came under British control as a colony in 1874. It was granted independence in 1970. This publication sets out the documentary progress to independence. The book, divided into seven chapters, contains documents covering the political and economic background to Fiji's constitutional evolution; the aspirations and national interests of Fijians; the London constitutional conference and its aftermath, July 1965 - September 1967; the Alliance government, January 1968 - September 1969 and finally documents leading towards independence and the achievement of independence. The book is based overwhelmingly on hitherto unpublished Colonial Office records which documents Fiji's progress over a ten-year period leading to indpendence in 1970.
