Book excerpt: About nine miles long and two miles wide, Crystal Lake has been a recreational center in northwest Michigan for over 100 years. However, resorts and vacations were not the intention of Benzonias first settlers, who arrived on Crystal Lakes eastern shore in 1858 to found a religious colony and a college. In an attempt to increase the areas economic potential with a navigable channel to Lake Michigan, Crystal Lake was accidentally lowered in 1873. As the waters drained away, an unexpected boon occurred as summer camps, cottages, and resorts sprang up along its shores. The railroads and steamships were quick to follow with eager entrepreneurs, developers, and tourists. Between Frankfort and Point Betsie to the west, and Beulah to the east, an assortment of hideaways and getaways were established to cater to people of differing religions, occupations, and classes.

Elliana MacLeod has come home to whip the Mirror Lake Inn into tip-top shape, the only way to prevent her mother from selling the beloved family business. In between watching over mischievous, cigar-sneaking Grandpa Joe and trying to help Highland Falls win the Most Romantic Small Town in America contest, Elliana’s plate isn’t just full, it’s overflowing. She can’t refuse Nathan Black’s offer to fix up the inn, even if the gorgeous law enforcement officer has made it abundantly clear he considers her a friend, and nothing more. Nate knows he’s not cut out for long-term relationships or white picket fences, and that’s what Ellie deserves. Yet keeping her at arm’s length is nearly impossible, especially once they’re working—and living—side-by-side. The more time he spends with Ellie, the more he wants, and not just for today but forever. When Ellie’s ex returns to town, has Nate missed his chance with the woman of his dreams?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crystal Lake lies between the towns of Tolland and Stafford on a five-mile-long triangular strip of land extending from the northeastern corner of Ellington. Attracted by the lakes sandy shore surrounded by forests of oak, chestnut, pine, and maple, early families of settlers called the lake Square Pond. In the 1890s, Crystal Lake became a destination resort. Its popularity extended through the advent of the interurban trolley and Depression-era auto trippers who stayed in the lakes hotels, cottages, and roadside tourist cabins. In the 1930s, the Sandy Beach Ballroom attracted the big bands of Duke Ellington, Guy Lombardo, and Cab Calloway. The ballroom also served as a roller-skating rink where young people from Ellington, Stafford, Rockville, and surrounding towns spent their leisure hours. Today Crystal Lake remains a popular getaway for fishing, swimming, and boating.

But while the friends are expert at counting stitches, they haven’t counted on murder. Guests and staff at the Crystal Lake Inn are as varied as a mixed bag of yarn, but most colorful is certainly the owner, charismatic self-help guru and former psychiatrist Dr. Max Flemming. The doctor may have told all in a revealing autobiography, but from his ex-wife to the widow of his former business partner—both employees at the inn—Max seems mired in shadows from his past. And when a killer strikes during a mountaintop retreat, the Black Sheep wonder what the good doctor might be hiding. The police seem to be following the wrong thread. But while Maggie’s workshops have given the knitters a unique view of the tensions at the little inn, can they make sense of a crime that is as complexly stranded as a Fair Isle sweater? When the killer murders a second time, the Black Sheep wonder if they’ve dropped a stitch and put themselves in mortal danger...

Communities were developed around Crystal Lake and Campgaw, and by the late 1860s, a new railroad would bring further development to the growing community. Prominent families such as the Ackermans, Demarests, Pulises, Storms, and Zabriskies were leaders in the area, and their marks on the landscape of the town are evident today in the surviving homes, road names, and descendants. After Franklin Lakes became an independent municipality in 1922, new housing developments, businesses, and amenities were created. The community continues to grow and improve while retaining strong ties to its history.

Her mother, who was stripped of the Miss Empire State crown in 1948 because of an unwanted pregnancy, is partially vindicated. Two of her daughters are on their way to the Miss American Beauty Pageant. On her road to "nationals," Glory soon finds herself thrust from her sheltered world into that socio-cultural roller coaster that was 1969. It is a world populated by hawks and doves, fraternity brothers and radicals, beauty queens and bra-burning feminists. On this journey she not only discovers true love, but also her own self worth as a woman.
