Book excerpt: Something’s happening to the girls on Denton Street. It’s the summer of 1980 in Cleveland, Ohio, and Phoebe Shaw and her best friend Jacqueline have just graduated high school, only to confront an ugly, uncertain future. Across the city, abandoned factories populate the skyline; meanwhile at the shore, one strong spark, and the Cuyahoga River might catch fire. But none of that compares to what’s happening in their own west side neighborhood. The girls Phoebe and Jacqueline have grown up with are changing. It starts with footprints of dark water on the sidewalk. Then, one by one, the girls’ bodies wither away, their fingernails turning to broken glass, and their bones exposed like corroded metal beneath their flesh. As rumors spread about the grotesque transformations, soon everyone from nosy tourists to clinic doctors and government men start arriving on Denton Street, eager to catch sight of “the Rust Maidens” in metamorphosis. But even with all the onlookers, nobody can explain what’s happening or why—except perhaps the Rust Maidens themselves. Whispering in secret, they know more than they’re telling, and Phoebe realizes her former friends are quietly preparing for something that will tear their neighborhood apart. Alternating between past and present, Phoebe struggles to unravel the mystery of the Rust Maidens—and her own unwitting role in the transformations—before she loses everything she’s held dear: her home, her best friend, and even perhaps her own body.

Book Franco s Crypt

  • Author : Jeremy Treglown
  • Publisher : Farrar, Straus and Giroux
  • Release : 2013-08-13

Download or read book Franco s Crypt written by Jeremy Treglown and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. This book was released on 2013-08-13 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An open-minded and clear-eyed reexamination of the cultural artifacts of Franco's Spain True, false, or both? Spain's 1939-75 dictator, Francisco Franco, was a pioneer of water conservation and sustainable energy. Pedro Almodóvar is only the most recent in a line of great antiestablishment film directors who have worked continuously in Spain since the 1930s. As early as 1943, former Republicans and Nationalists were collaborating in Spain to promote the visual arts, irrespective of the artists' political views. Censorship can benefit literature. Memory is not the same thing as history. Inside Spain as well as outside, many believe-wrongly-that under Franco's fascist dictatorship, nothing truthful or imaginatively worthwhile could be said or written or shown. In his groundbreaking new book, Franco's Crypt: Spanish Culture and Memory Since 1936, Jeremy Treglown argues that oversimplifications like these of a complicated, ambiguous actuality have contributed to a separate falsehood: that there was and continues to be a national pact to forget the evils for which Franco's side (and, according to this version, his side alone) was responsible. The myth that truthfulness was impossible inside Franco's Spain may explain why foreign narratives (For Whom the Bell Tolls, Homage to Catalonia) have seemed more credible than Spanish ones. Yet La Guerra de España was, as its Spanish name asserts, Spain's own war, and in recent years the country has begun to make a more public attempt to "reclaim" its modern history of fascism. How it is doing so, and the role played in the process by notions of historical memory, are among the subjects of this wide-ranging and challenging book. Franco's Crypt reveals that despite state censorship, events of the time were vividly recorded. Treglown looks at what's actually there-monuments, paintings, public works, novels, movies, video games-and considers, in a captivating narrative, the totality of what it shows. The result is a much-needed reexamination of a history we only thought we knew.

Book The Crypt of Academe

Download or read book The Crypt of Academe written by John L. Brown and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2008 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Herewith are presented twenty highly personal tales from the darkest depths of the Crypt of Academe, told by an old soldier no longer in the line of fire. The topics include evaluation of students and faculty, how faculty claw their way up the ranks, who wins the awards and why and how decisions get made, or more often don’t. Each tale is recounted in about three pages in a straight forward manner without gilt or favor to anyone. I have tried to be frank in my writing and may offend a few but you can’t please everyone all the time and others at no time. But I hope to bring a smile to the lips of some and a pause for thought about the real life and meaning of our Crypts, a.k.a. universities. If you don’t like the writing of each tale you may enjoy the accompanying illustrative cartoons. Despite what might be interpreted as the odd harsh word or phrase I would defend the unparalleled importance of all Crypts to the fabric of our life. At their best they contribute beyond measure to our intellectual, social, emotional, democratic and economic life. And any institution of such importance deserves periodic scrutiny from a variety of angles, including the tongue in cheek.
