Download or read book Crying for Our Elders written by Kristen E. Cheney and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2017-03-05 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The HIV/AIDS epidemic in Africa has defined the childhoods of an entire generation. Over the past twenty years, international NGOs and charities have devoted immense attention to the millions of African children orphaned by the disease. But in Crying for Our Elders, anthropologist Kristen E. Cheney argues that these humanitarian groups have misread the ‘orphan crisis’. She explains how the global humanitarian focus on orphanhood often elides the social and political circumstances that actually present the greatest adversity to vulnerable children—in effect deepening the crisis and thereby affecting children’s lives as irrevocably as HIV/AIDS itself. Through ethnographic fieldwork and collaborative research with children in Uganda, Cheney traces how the “best interest” principle that governs children’s’ rights can stigmatize orphans and leave children in the post-antiretroviral era even more vulnerable to exploitation. She details the dramatic effects this has on traditional family support and child protection and stresses child empowerment over pity. Crying for Our Elders advances current discussions on humanitarianism, children’s studies, orphanhood, and kinship. By exploring the unique experience of AIDS orphanhood through the eyes of children, caregivers, and policymakers, Cheney shows that despite the extreme challenges of growing up in the era of HIV/AIDS, the post-ARV generation still holds out hope for the future.

Download or read book Tears of a Gangster written by Valentine and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2018-07-21 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the story of the reality of New York street gang in the late 90s to present. It is about the violence, the passion, the despair, the pain, the loyalty, and the disloyalty. It is the true story of the destruction of families caused by violence, incarceration and racism. It is about murder, rape, betrayal, and the injustice of the justice system. This is a society that fails to protect, defend, educate, rehabilitate, and inspire young people to succeed and families to grow and flourish. It’s the Bronx and rawness of the ghetto. It’s the true life story of actual individuals with their identities masked to protect them from further harm. Blacks, Dominicans, Puerto Ricans, Latin Americans, Muslims, Israelites, and the police are all engaged in a battle to dominate and to survive. The backdrop is the Bronx, the inner city and one of poorest congressional districts in the United States. It is about a failing school system, the question of race, the history of conflict, and the brainwashing of a society to ignore the truth and keep living a lie. The games they play out in the street pit females against females, and the cost is not being able to trust anyone or anything. Ask yourself the question, Could you survive this world? Can anyone survive this world? This is the world that some people live in, some people fear, and some people have never heard of. It is also the world that those in power don’t want you to know about so that they can continue to profit off the misery and suffering of people fighting, trying, and doing their best to keep each other down. They’re down lower than you can ever imagine or believe someone can go.
Download or read book Tears from Heaven written by Dr. Tabowei and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-08-18 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tears from Heaven is a true life story (names of persons and places have been changed though) that is set in a typical African village in the oil-rich Niger Delta region of Nigeria. The events span through a period of about twenty years. This book portrays the hydra-headed effects of ignorance in rural African society. Several unscientific practices such as belief in witchcraft being the cause of all evils, communing with the dead, and attributing misfortunes in ones life to an enemy are evident. These are taken to such extremes that families have been torn apart, marriages broken, and peoples lives threatened. Churches are not left out too. Preachers capitalise on this ignorance and the tendency to attribute things to the supernatural to defraud their unsuspecting members. They deceive their members by claiming to hear from God, while they actually do not, pretending to have solution to all problems and performing rituals in the name of casting out evil spirits, among other things. Tears from Heaven portrays God literally crying in heaven as a result of preachers abusing his name for selfish interests. He (God) also cries seeing the pain people go through and the injustice they suffer from self-inflicted or society-inflicted harm based on false cultural beliefs. Contrary to popular belief, these inhuman practices are still held on to in many places, and reading through this book will expose this can of worms that many thought was hitherto closed or even dead. As the traditional ruler of my community, I am best positioned to tell the story because I have first-hand experience, having spent a greater part of my life with the people. It will make an interesting reading for those interested in African philosophy and culture. More so, it is set in the troubled oil-rich Niger Delta region of Nigeria. It also points to the fact that there are some things that science has not changed and may unfortunately not be able to change. Tears from Heaven
Download or read book The Children s Bible written by Charles Foster Kent Henry A. Sherman and published by anboco. This book was released on 2016-08-24 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Children's Bible" provides, in simple English, a translation of selections from both the Old and the New Testament. These selections have been made as a result of more than twenty-five years of observation and study. The text is that of the Bible itself, but in the language of the child, so that it may easily be read to the younger children and by those who are older. It is not in words of one syllable, for while the child is reading the Bible he should gradually learn the meaning of new words and idioms. The Bible contains the foundations on which the religious life of the child must be built. The immortal stories and songs of the Old and New Testaments are his richest inheritance from the past. To give him this heritage in language and form that he can understand and enjoy is the duty and privilege of his parents and teachers. It is hoped that "The Children's Bible" will meet the need and the demand, which parents and educators alike have long felt and often expressed, for a simple translation of selections from the Bible most suited to the needs and the interests of the child. It is also believed that after the child has learned to appreciate and love these stories and songs, he will be eager and able to read the Bible as a whole with genuine interest and understanding.
