Book Crust Mantle Recycling at Convergence Zones

Download or read book Crust Mantle Recycling at Convergence Zones written by Stanley R. Hart and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book consists of a collection of papers presented at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) on "Crust/mantle Recycl ing at Convergence Zones," held in Antalya, Turkey, between May 25 to 29, 1987. The workshop was attended by 36 earth scientists from ten countries and 28 papers were presented. Crust/mantle recycling is one of the most fundamental processes in the Earth. The study and understanding of this process requires the consideration of the Earth as a whole system including the atmosphere, the hydrosphere and the core, as well as the crust and the mantle; effective interdisciplinary collaboration is therefore essential to our progress. The Antalya ARW gave us the opportunity to assemble key specialists from relevant branches of the earth sciences and to address our state of knowledge. This ARW proved to be very useful in attaining an interdisciplinary, mutual understanding among specialists from diverse fields such as isotope and trace element geochemistry, mineral physics, theoretical geophysics, seismology, experimental petrology, and structural geology.

  • Author : Geoffrey Brown
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 9401115168

Download or read book The Inaccessible Earth written by Geoffrey Brown and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the dozen years since the first edition appeared, there has been a great advance in understanding of the Earth's deep interior. This is not because there have been breakthroughs in understanding, or even many changes of ideas, but largely because of many small advances, often the result of improved tech niques. This has led to a complete revision of the book. For instance, we have a much better idea of how the cloud of gas that formed the Solar Nebula evolved into the Sun and the planets, and of the chemical processes that accompanied its evolution and determined the mix of elements in the Earth. We have a better understanding of convection and how plates are an essential part of it, and how it is accompanied by chemical processes that have extracted the materials to build continents. Although the major variation within the Earth is radial, improved geophysical and geochemical techniques have made progress in investigating and under standing the lateral heterogeneities, and it is encouraging that when geochemists and geophysicists talk about lateral heterogeneities they can sometimes be referring to the same thing. Plumes have become very fashionable as the cause of hot-spot magmatism and associated geochemical anomalies, probably origi nating at the base of the mantle (though clear evidence for their existence is lacking).

Book The South Aegean Active Volcanic Arc

Download or read book The South Aegean Active Volcanic Arc written by M. Fytikas and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2005-09-13 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of 22 selected papers from the homonymous Conference held in September 2003 Milos, Greece. The aim of the conference was to serve as a forum for the presentation and constructive discussion of the state-of-the-art and emerging issues on the South Aegean Volcanic Arc. In the first part of the book the tectonic- geodynamic setting and the present upper mantle structure of the Aegean area are discussed. It includes an interesting interpretation of data on the spatial distribution of intermediate focal depth earthquakes, fault plane solutions and deep velocity structures, to further investigate active tectonics related to the deep structure of the southern Aegean volcanic arc. The second part deals with general volcanological, petrological and tectonic characteristics of the SAAVA presenting an extensive review of volcanological, chemical, isotope and tectonic data, using a large amount of new field and laboratory data. Interesting conclusions are presented regarding the present volcanic associations, the volcanic fields location and shape in respect to the large tectonic lineaments and the plate motions, the source of the SAAVA parental magmas. Presented in the third part is an extensive review on the volcanic hazard assessment and the monitoring state of the SAAVA centers. Seismic and geodetic monitoring of the Santorini volcano and the recent (1995-1998) crisis of Nisyros volcano are presented and discussed. The last part deals with hydrothermal deposits and processes in the SAAVA, as well as products and processes in adjacent areas with a particular interest and significance that link them to the SAAVA processes.*Systematic re-evaluation on the geodynamic and tectonic setting of the Aegean active volcanic centers *Thorough review with new data and ideas on the magma source region, the magma differentiation processes in both the deep and shallow levels, and the volcanological processes related both to the magma composition and storage depth as well as to the tectonic regime of the volcano growth area*Up to date estimation of the volcanic hazard in the Aegean area, and a detailed presentation of the present state and the monitoring efforts of the South Aegean active centers

Download or read book The Sea Floor written by Eugen Seibold and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Man's understanding of how this planet is put together and how it evolved has changed radically during the last 30 years. This great revolution in geology - now usually subsumed under the concept of Plate Tectonics - brought the realization that convection within the Earth is responsible for the origin of today's ocean basins and conti nents, and that the grand features of the Earth's surface are the product of ongoing large-scale horizontal motions. Some of these notions were put forward earlier in this century (by A. Wegener, in 1912, and by A. Holmes, in 1929), but most of the new ideas were an outgrowth of the study of the ocean floor after World War II. In its impact on the earth sciences, the plate tectonics revolution is comparable to the upheaval wrought by the ideas of Charles Darwin (1809-1882), which started the intense discussion on the evolution of the biosphere that has recently heated up again. Darwin drew his inspiration from observations on island life made during the voyage of the Beagle (1831-1836), and his work gave strong impetus to the first global oceanographic expedition, the voyage of HMS Challenger (1872- 1876). Ever since, oceanographic research has been intimately associ ated with fundamental advances in the knowledge of Earth. This should come as no surprise. After all, our planet's surface is mostly ocean.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive introduction to radiogenic andstable isotope geochemistry. Beginning with a brief overview ofnuclear physics and nuclear origins, it then reviews radioactivedecay schemes and their use in geochronology. A following chaptercovers the closely related techniques such as fission-track andcarbon-14 dating. Subsequent chapters cover nucleosyntheticanomalies in meteorites and early solar system chronology and theuse of radiogenic isotopes in understanding the evolution of theEarth’s mantle, crust, and oceans. Attention then turns tostable isotopes and after reviewing the basic principles involved, the book explores their use in topics as diverse as mantleevolution, archeology and paleontology, ore formation, and, particularly, paleoclimatology. A following chapter explores recentdevelopments including unconventional stable isotopes,mass-independent fractionation, and isotopic‘clumping’. The final chapter reviews the isotopicvariation in the noble gases, which result from both radioactivedecay and chemical fractionations.

Book Metasomatism and the Chemical Transformation of Rock

Download or read book Metasomatism and the Chemical Transformation of Rock written by Daniel Harlov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-08-15 with total page 805 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fluid-aided mass transfer and subsequent mineral re-equilibration are the two defining features of metasomatism and must be present in order for metamorphism to occur. Coupled with igneous and tectonic processes, metasomatism has played a major role in the formation of the Earth’s continental and oceanic crust and lithospheric mantle as well as in their evolution and subsequent stabilization. Metasomatic processes can include ore mineralization, metasomatically induced alteration of oceanic lithosphere, mass transport in and alteration of subducted oceanic crust and overlying mantle wedge, which has subsequent implications regarding mass transport, fluid flow, and volatile storage in the lithospheric mantle overall, as well as both regional and localized crustal metamorphism. Metasomatic alteration of accessory minerals such as zircon or monazite can allow for the dating of metasomatic events as well as give additional information regarding the chemistry of the fluids responsible. Lastly present day movement of fluids in both the lithospheric mantle and deep to mid crust can be observed utilizing geophysical resources such as electrical resistivity and seismic data. Such observations help to further clarify the picture of actual metasomatic processes as inferred from basic petrographic, mineralogical, and geochemical data. The goal of this volume is to bring together a diverse group of geologists, each of whose specialities and long range experience regarding one or more aspects of metasomatism during geologic processes, should allow them to contribute to a series of review chapters, which outline the basis of our current understanding of how metasomatism influences and helps to control both the evolution and stability of the crust and lithospheric mantle.
