Book excerpt: This is a book about readers on the move in the age of Victorian empire. It examines the libraries and reading habits of five reading constituencies from the long nineteenth century: shipboard emigrants, Australian convicts, Scottish settlers, polar explorers, and troops in the First World War. What was the role of reading in extreme circumstances? How were new meanings made under strange skies? How was reading connected with mobile communities in an age of expansion? Uncovering a vast range of sources from the period, from diaries, periodicals, and literary culture, Bill Bell reveals some remarkable and unanticipated insights into the way that reading operated within and upon the British Empire for over a century.

Book excerpt: Robinson Crusoe explores Defoe's story, the legend it captured, the universal desire which underlies the myth and a range of modern re-writings which reveal a continued fascination with the problematic character of this narrative. Whether envisaged as an heroic rejection of the old world order, a piece of pre-colonialist propaganda or a tale raising archetypal problems of 'otherness' and 'inequality', the mythic value of Crusoe has become a pretext over many centuries for an examination of some of the fundamental problems of existence. This collection of essays examines, from a wide range of critical and philosophical perspectives, the cultural manifestations of Robinson Crusoe in different centuries, in different media, in different genres.

Book excerpt: Robinson Crusoe is a novel by Daniel Defoe, first published on 25 April 1719. The first edition credited the work's protagonist Robinson Crusoe as its author, leading many readers to believe he was a real person and the book a travelogue of true incidents.Epistolary, confessional, and didactic in form, the book is presented as an autobiography of the title character (whose birth name is Robinson Kreutznaer)-a castaway who spends 28 years on a remote tropical desert island near Trinidad, encountering cannibals, captives, and mutineers, before ultimately being rescued. The story has been thought to be based on the life of Alexander Selkirk, a Scottish castaway who lived for four years on a Pacific island called "Más a Tierra", now part of Chile, which was renamed Robinson Crusoe Island in 1966

This book was released on 2021-09-21 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2020 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2,3, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, language: English, abstract: Although released at a time, in which the downfall of English Puritanism was already conspicuous, I claim that by contrasting the protagonists of the two works, Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe definitely contains theological elements. These are founded in the old-fashioned Puritan belief depicting the spiritual journey of a reluctant pilgrim to God. In validating this thesis, I will primarily work with the two aforementioned works and another publication of Daniel Defoe, as well as the King James Bible which most likely has been the translation that the two authors might have had at their disposal. Due to the fact that Daniel Defoe has been raised in a Presbyterian home, I am also going to consult the Institutes of the Christian Religion by the French reformer John Calvin and other secondary literature. For the confirmation of my above-mentioned claim, I will structure the term paper as follows: The first section, will feature the spiritual lives of Crusoe and Christian before their conversion. The second section will cover their conversion experience as such and the crucial role of God’s providence. The last section focusses concisely on the possible intention of Daniel Defoe. I will conclude this paper by summarizing the different outcomes supporting my thesis statement and by mentioning some potential research topics based on this paper.
