Book Cruising the Library

Download or read book Cruising the Library written by Melissa Adler and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2017-04-03 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cruising the Library offers a highly innovative analysis of the history of sexuality and categories of sexual perversion through a critical examination of the Library of Congress and its cataloging practices. Taking the publication of Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick’s Epistemologies of the Closet as emblematic of the Library’s inability to account for sexual difference, Melissa Adler embarks upon a detailed critique of how cataloging systems have delimited and proscribed expressions of gender, sexuality, ethnicity, and race in a manner that mirrors psychiatric and sociological attempts to pathologize non-normative sexual practices and civil subjects. Taking up a parallel analysis, Adler utilizes Roderick A. Ferguson’s Aberrations in Black as another example of how the Library of Congress fails to account for, and thereby “buries,” difference. She examines the physical space of the Library as one that encourages forms of governmentality as theorized by Michel Foucault while also allowing for its utopian possibilities. Finally, she offers a brief but highly illuminating history of the Delta Collection. Likely established before the turn of the twentieth century and active until its gradual dissolution in the 1960s, the Delta Collection was a secret archive within the Library of Congress that housed materials confiscated by the United States Post Office and other federal agencies. These were materials deemed too obscene for public dissemination or general access. Adler reveals how the Delta Collection was used to regulate difference and squelch dissent in the McCarthy era while also linking it to evolving understandings of so-called perversion in the scientific study of sexual difference. Sophisticated, engrossing, and highly readable, Cruising the Library provides us with a critical understanding of library science, an alternative view of discourses around the history of sexuality, and an analysis of the relationship between governmentality and the cataloging of research and information—as well as categories of difference—in American culture.

Book Cruising Through Research

Download or read book Cruising Through Research written by John D. Volkman and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1998-01-15 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teaching research skills is a breeze with these fun, reproducible lessons! Through a variety of engaging projects, students experience and learn research techniques that they can use throughout their lives. In one lesson, they take a treasure hunt approach, consulting standard library materials such as Current Biography, Dictionary of American History, Bartlett's Familiar Quotations, and Contemporary Authors, to find answers to a series of reference questions. In another students write letters (term papers in disguise) that describe in detail a future cruise. In the process they learn how to take notes and combine facts to produce an interesting paper and an accurate bibliography. Projects include topics for science, foreign language, social science, and language arts.

Book Cataloging and Classification

Download or read book Cataloging and Classification written by Gretchen L. Hoffman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-11-24 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cataloging and classification field is changing rapidly. New concepts and models, such as linked data, identity management, the IFLA Library Reference Model, and the latest revision of Resource Description and Access (RDA), have the potential to change how libraries provide access to their collections. To prepare library and information science (LIS) students to be successful cataloging practitioners in this changing landscape, they need a solid understanding of fundamental cataloging concepts, standards, and practices: their history, where they stand currently, and possibilities for the future. The chapters in Cataloging and Classification: Back to Basics are meant to complement textbooks and lectures so students can go deeper into specific topics. New and well-seasoned library practitioners will also benefit from reading these chapters as a way to refresh or fill gaps in their knowledge of cataloging and classification. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of the journal, Cataloging & Classification Quarterly.
