He beat Mom regularly for six years while I hid in the shadows. Our home life was unstable; we lived in campers, run-down shacks, and dilapidated trailers with no heat or electricity. Constant chaos ensued as we tried to desperately survive the horror story that was our lives. Gregory controlled us and treated us as his personal slaves, and Mom dutifully endured while I accumulated resentment within. I was a quiet, introverted child who internalized everything. Everyone thought I was dealing with the situation beautifully and therefore offered me no help or support. My faith in God pulled me through those times and made me into a stronger, better person. Despite growing up in poverty without loving parents or family and with the troubles I have had in relationships, I have done well for myself. God has blessed me beyond measure. I credit all my success to God and give him the glory.

We get simple instructions from tree noises except for getting out of the way should one of them collapse. Not much information was gathered after a life of staring up at trees in awe, not even a smile. The reason is obvious. We have to be told what a word is when struck on the ears for the first time, generally intended to identify some object that can bring danger or caring or usefulness. After that identification, its clear sailing. The word grows like the tree does, with additional information tacked on to get you to laugh or cry or shrug or wonder or turn away unconcerned. Unless the word is attached to other words, words lurking about that can be hooked up with ease. Something new will happen. The mind can become busy directing the body to cause something to come about. Something to come about comes in two sizes. The one size we know the best is an action to change what is around our body, directed by needs and wants. It is the second one coming about that has no outward change of body direction but does something special to the mind as to be carried around by that mind for a lifetime, if not longer. It is an amazing sense of ones feelings without motion to the body, rising out of words clustered together in certain ways that words can come together. This miracle of the human animal creates the feelings of a satisfaction never to be known to any other of the animals also fighting for survival. This sensation strikes deeply within oneself and is called by names we all recognize. There is poetry, prose, and plays to mention the few that bring me to a sense of emotion that otherwise would lie forever dormant in the rush through lifes practical requiring needs to keep oneself available for more gathering up of practical needs. My break with that cycle, as life permitted, is what is expressed, as best as I could, in this book as I wandered in and out of one act, plays, poems, and essays, all discoveries I had a chance to taste while the tasting was good.

About two years later I was interviewed by someone from the Sun Senior News, a paper mailed to Sun City residents at the start of each month, because Id started a New Yorkers club. When the interviewer found out I was a freelance writer for the Neighbors section of the Sacramento Bee she suggested I write something for the Sun Senior News. I wrote a piece called Observations after Two Years in Sun City, which was printed, then a few more Observations, then it became a monthly feature and is still going on. This book is a collection of ten years of Observations, from 2000 through 2009. As I put it together, I saw that I had gone from columns that were mainly about Sun City to columns on what was going on in the outside world. Observations allowed me to express my opinions on a number of matters. I enjoyed doing them, and hope readers will enjoy reading them. Martin Green is a retiree/free-lance writer living in Roseville, California. Starting in 1991, he started writing articles and for a time was a columnist for a weekly alternative newspaper in Sacramento, the Suttertown News. In the same year, he began free-lancing for the Neighbors section of the Sacramento Bee, contributing over 100 articles until Neighbors was discontinued. Since 2000, hes been writing for a monthly newspaper, the Sun Senior News, which goes to over 10,000 households in two retirement communities, Sun City Roseville (where he lives) and Sun City Lincoln Hills. He contributes two features each month, one called Observations and the other called Favorite Restaurants. In addition to his journalistic writing, Martin has had over 200 short stories published in online magazines, plus a few literary and senior publications. He has so far self-published three collections of these short stories (2006, 2007 and 2008) and has also self-published a longer work, One Year in Retirement (2009). Martin has been married to Beverly (a water-color artist) for 45 years, has three sons (David, Michael and Christopher), three grandsons (Logan, Mason and Morgan), one granddaughter (Stephanie) and two cats, (Bun-Bun and Shandyman).
