During his excavation of his subject, Martin Gilbert has discovered many gems. Book excerpt: The photographs and cartoon portraits in this volume, collected by Martin Gilbert over several years, vividly portrait the variety and span of Winston Churchill's life. More than a third of the photographs and most of the cartoons came from Sir Winston's own albums, appearing nowhere else. Displayed here, they are supported by a rich historical commentary, often in Churchill's own words or those of this contemporaries. The result is a unique photographic record, as remarkable for its completeness as for the many fascinating pictures it contains.

Book Bringing the World Home

Download or read book Bringing the World Home written by Theodore Huters and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2017-04-01 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bringing the World Home sheds new light on China’s vibrant cultural life between 1895 and 1919—a crucial period that marks a watershed between the conservative old regime and the ostensibly iconoclastic New Culture of the 1920s. Although generally overlooked in the effort to understand modern Chinese history, the era has much to teach us about cultural accommodation and is characterized by its own unique intellectual life. This original and probing work traces the most significant strands of the new post-1895 discourse, concentrating on the anxieties inherent in a complicated process of cultural transformation. It focuses principally on how the need to accommodate the West was reflected in such landmark novels of the period as Wu Jianren’s Strange Events Eyewitnessed in the Past Twenty Years and Zhu Shouju’s Tides of the Huangpu, which began serial publication in Shanghai in 1916. The negative tone of these narratives contrasts sharply with the facile optimism that characterizes the many essays on the "New Novel" appearing in the popular press of the time. Neither iconoclasm nor the wholesale embrace of the new could square the contradicting intellectual demands imposed by the momentous alternatives presenting themselves. Book The Audacious Raconteur

Download or read book The Audacious Raconteur written by Leela Prasad and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2020-11-15 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can a subject be sovereign in a hegemony? Can creativity be reined in by forces of empire? Studying closely the oral narrations and writings of four Indian authors in colonial India, The Audacious Raconteur argues that even the most hegemonic circumstances cannot suppress "audacious raconteurs": skilled storytellers who fashion narrative spaces that allow themselves to remain sovereign and beyond subjugation. By drawing attention to the vigorous orality, maverick use of photography, literary ventriloquism, and bilingualism in the narratives of these raconteurs, Leela Prasad shows how the ideological bulwark of colonialism—formed by concepts of colonial modernity, history, science, and native knowledge—is dismantled. Audacious raconteurs wrest back meanings of religion, culture, and history that are closer to their lived understandings. The figure of the audacious raconteur does not only hover in an archive but suffuses everyday life. Underlying these ideas, Prasad's personal interactions with the narrators' descendants give weight to her innovative argument that the audacious raconteur is a necessary ethical and artistic figure in human experience. Thanks to generous funding from Duke University, the ebook editions of this book are available as Open Access volumes from Cornell Open (cornellpress.cornell.edu/cornell-open) and other repositories.
