Book excerpt: When a killer plays mind games with a cop, there are no rules…“As authentic and scary as thrillers get.”—Nelson DeMille The first victim is attacked in her home. Tied to her bed. Forced to watch every unspeakable act of cruelty—but unable to scream. The second murder is even more twisted. Signed, sealed, and delivered with a message for the police, stuffed in the victim’s throat. A fractured nursery rhyme that ends with a warning: “There will be more.” For detective Jack Murphy, it’s more than a threat. It’s a personal invitation to play. And no one plays rougher than Jack. Especially when the killer’s pawns are the people he loves… “A jaw-dropping thriller.”--Gregg Olsen, New York Times-bestselling author of Lying Next to Me “A tornado of drama.”—Shane Gericke, author of The Fury “Put this on your must-read list.”—John Lutz, New York Times-bestselling author of Darker Than Night

But she was at a loss to figure what was going on now. She knew that George Barlow and even Sam Perkins had gone to bat for her . . . and that they had lost, at least they had lost up to this point. She rose from the chair opposite Barlow, as he rose with her. She faced him and held her hand out to shake his. He responded and took her hand. "Thanks for trying to help, George. I'll start the hearing process." She turned and left. Barlow was left alone, drained, exhausted, and truly depressed, standing in front of his desk watching her leave. As she shut the door to his office behind her, he walked back behing his desk and slumped to his chair, shaking his head, frowning. Retirement looked better and better. In fact, he decided then that he would indeed step down. He couldn't stand this kind of thing anymore. But he would never quit until he rescued Lorna from whatever sinister force was in motion against her. And he intended to do whatever it took to do just that. Starting now.

Book Means Motives and Opportunities

Download or read book Means Motives and Opportunities written by Christian Breunig and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2024-02-08 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Means, Motives, and Opportunities illuminates how states spend public money through the lens of governmental structure, executive power, and interest group competition. Christian Breunig and Chris Koski argue that policymaking is a function of not only policymakers' means (powers), but of their motives (issues) and opportunities (interest group competition) for change. Using over twenty-five years of data across all fifty US states, four in-depth case studies, and multiple examples of budget battles, the book describes a budget-making environment in which governors must balance the preferences of interest groups with their own, all while attempting to build a budget that roughly balances. While governors are uniquely powerful, the range of changes they can make is largely impacted by interest group competition. By showing how means, motives, and opportunities matter, the book shows how spending decisions at the state level influence nearly every aspect of American life.

Book Girls Moral Panic and News Media

Download or read book Girls Moral Panic and News Media written by Sharon Mazzarella and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-11-07 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mazzarella examines the representational politics behind journalistic constructions of US girls and girlhood through a series of contemporary in-depth case studies which work to document a wider cultural moral panic about the troublesome nature of girls’ bodies. The public concern and media fascination with youth so evident in the United States today is a century-old phenomenon. From the flappers of the 1920s to the bobbysoxers of the 1950s, from the hippies of the 1960s and on to the ever-present pregnant teens, this fascination has played out in the media and has consistently focused on (primarily White, middle-class, heterosexual) girls. A growing body of research has revealed the manner in which journalistic practice constructs such girls as problems. Girls, Moral Panic, and News Media takes a broad look at U.S. news media constructions of girls, girlhoods, and girl’s bodies/sexualities through a series of contemporary in-depth case studies including news coverage of the 2008 Gloucester (MA) High School "pregnancy pact," teen gun control activist Emma González, and the sexualization of "early puberty." In general, the news media constructs girls’ bodies as troublesome and in need of adult surveillance and policing. These case studies document a cultural obsession with girls’ bodies—an obsession that often approaches moral panic. This book will be key reading for researchers and instructors in the rapidly growing international and interdisciplinary field of Girls’ Studies, and scholars of Media Studies, Cultural Studies, Gender Studies, Communication and Journalism.

Book Modernism Media and Propaganda

Download or read book Modernism Media and Propaganda written by Mark Wollaeger and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2008-09-15 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though often defined as having opposite aims, means, and effects, modernism and modern propaganda developed at the same time and influenced each other in surprising ways. The professional propagandist emerged as one kind of information specialist, the modernist writer as another. Britain was particularly important to this double history. By secretly hiring well-known writers and intellectuals to write for the government and by exploiting their control of new global information systems, the British in World War I invented a new template for the manipulation of information that remains with us to this day. Making a persuasive case for the importance of understanding modernism in the context of the history of modern propaganda, Modernism, Media, and Propaganda also helps explain the origins of today's highly propagandized world. Modernism, Media, and Propaganda integrates new archival research with fresh interpretations of British fiction and film to provide a comprehensive cultural history of the relationship between modernism and propaganda in Britain during the first half of the twentieth century. From works by Joseph Conrad to propaganda films by Alfred Hitchcock and Orson Welles, Mark Wollaeger traces the transition from literary to cinematic propaganda while offering compelling close readings of major fiction by Virginia Woolf, Ford Madox Ford, and James Joyce.
