Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Crude Conditions in American Musical Education The following item was recently seen in a well-known German periodical: "There are upwards of one hundred Americans now in Germany endeavoring to finish a musical education which was never begun." This, in more dignified phraseology, means that, from the German point of view, American musical training or education is lacking in the fundamentals. There are scores of piano players who possess a good degree of keyboard facility and many singers who possess considerable vocal facility, to whom a page of unfamiliar music is little better than a blank page, except as they ascertain how it sounds by playing it. The sight conveys no idea to them of the sound. Many readers will exclaim: "How could any one be expected to know how it sounds until it is heard?" This question alone is quite sufficient to prove the soundness of the German criticism just quoted. It also reveals the cause, - namely, a deep popular ignorance of what constitutes the true foundation of a musical education. No such degree of ignorance exists as to what constitutes the foundation of a literary, scientific, or business education. Therefore no one thinks of sending a child to a teacher of English grammar before that child has learned to read and write. If one could imagine such as absurdity, he could also imagine that there could be found teachers who would undertake the task. "How Absurd!" Book Democracy and Education

Download or read book Democracy and Education written by John Dewey and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1916 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.

Book The Crisis of Classical Music in America

Download or read book The Crisis of Classical Music in America written by Robert Freeman and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2014-08-14 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Crisis of Classical Music in America by Robert Freeman focuses on solutions for the oversupply of classically trained musicians in America, problem that grows ever more chronic as opportunities for classical musicians to gain full-time professional employment diminishes year upon year. An acute observer of the professional music scene, Freeman argues that music schools that train our future instrumentalists, composers, conductors, and singers need to equip their students with the communications and analytical skills they need to succeed in the rapidly changing music scene. This book maps a broad range of reforms required in the field of advanced music education and the organizations responsible for that education. Featuring a foreword by Leonard Slatkin, music director of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, The Crisis of Classical Music in America speaks to parents, prospective and current music students, music teachers and professors, department deans, university presidents and provosts, and even foundations and public organizations that fund such music programs. This book reaches out to all of these stakeholders and argues for meaningful change though wide-spread collaboration.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Music for Everybody: Organization and Leadership of Community Music Activities The Situation has given rise to serious concern on the part of all intelligent Americans. On every hand the questions are being asked: How can these conditions be changed? IS the remedy economic? IS it political? IS it educational? IS it religious? What remedies give promise of even a partial cure? How can the nation be induced once more to assume wholesome attitudes and to give itself wholeheartedly to those types of work upon which national prosperity depends? While other and very wise men have been making elaborate and technical studies of the Situation, the writers of this volume, in the light of their truly remark able war experiences, have proposed a practical solution. They are experts in diagnosing conditions of low morale. They are intelligently familiar with the common enemies of morale whether in the army, the factory, the great apartment house, or any other center of common interest. Under a great variety of conditions they have been successful in creating a friendly spirit where suspicion reigned. They have substituted contentment for dis content. Book Closing of the American Mind

Download or read book Closing of the American Mind written by Allan Bloom and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2008-06-30 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The brilliant, controversial, bestselling critique of American culture that “hits with the approximate force and effect of electroshock therapy” (The New York Times)—now featuring a new afterword by Andrew Ferguson in a twenty-fifth anniversary edition. In 1987, eminent political philosopher Allan Bloom published The Closing of the American Mind, an appraisal of contemporary America that “hits with the approximate force and effect of electroshock therapy” (The New York Times) and has not only been vindicated, but has also become more urgent today. In clear, spirited prose, Bloom argues that the social and political crises of contemporary America are part of a larger intellectual crisis: the result of a dangerous narrowing of curiosity and exploration by the university elites. Now, in this twenty-fifth anniversary edition, acclaimed author and journalist Andrew Ferguson contributes a new essay that describes why Bloom’s argument caused such a furor at publication and why our culture so deeply resists its truths today.

Book excerpt: Children are inherently musical. They respond to music and learn through music. Music expresses children's identity and heritage, teaches them to belong to a culture, and develops their cognitive well-being and inner self worth. As professional instructors, childcare workers, or students looking forward to a career working with children, we should continuously search for ways to tap into children's natural reservoir of enthusiasm for singing, moving and experimenting with instruments. But how, you might ask? What music is appropriate for the children I'm working with? How can music help inspire a well-rounded child? How do I reach and teach children musically? Most importantly perhaps, how can I incorporate music into a curriculum that marginalizes the arts? This book explores a holistic, artistic, and integrated approach to understanding the developmental connections between music and children. This book guides professionals to work through music, harnessing the processes that underlie music learning, and outlining developmentally appropriate methods to understand the role of music in children's lives through play, games, creativity, and movement. Additionally, the book explores ways of applying music-making to benefit the whole child, i.e., socially, emotionally, physically, cognitively, and linguistically.
