Book Planning for Coexistence

Download or read book Planning for Coexistence written by Libby Porter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-06-10 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Planning is becoming one of the key battlegrounds for Indigenous people to negotiate meaningful articulation of their sovereign territorial and political rights, reigniting the essential tension that lies at the heart of Indigenous-settler relations. But what actually happens in the planning contact zone - when Indigenous demands for recognition of coexisting political authority over territory intersect with environmental and urban land-use planning systems in settler-colonial states? This book answers that question through a critical examination of planning contact zones in two settler-colonial states: Victoria, Australia and British Columbia, Canada. Comparing the experiences of four Indigenous communities who are challenging and renegotiating land-use planning in these places, the book breaks new ground in our understanding of contemporary Indigenous land justice politics. It is the first study to grapple with what it means for planning to engage with Indigenous peoples in major cities, and the first of its kind to compare the underlying conditions that produce very different outcomes in urban and non-urban planning contexts. In doing so, the book exposes the costs and limits of the liberal mode of recognition as it comes to be articulated through planning, challenging the received wisdom that participation and consultation can solve conflicts of sovereignty. This book lays the theoretical, methodological and practical groundwork for imagining what planning for coexistence might look like: a relational, decolonizing planning praxis where self-determining Indigenous peoples invite settler-colonial states to their planning table on their terms.

Book Environmental Planning

Download or read book Environmental Planning written by Lincoln Allison and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-11-21 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1975, this was an entirely new approach to the study of environmental planning and problems. Planning had hitherto been generally described as a technical exercise, involving the solving of biological and economic problems. In Environmental Planning: A Political and Philosophical Analysis it is seen as an ideological activity and the development of planning in Britain and the nature of contemporary environment problems are analysed in terms of social and political theory. The book discusses the nature of ‘planning’, its relationship to ‘politics’ and examines the groups and ideas which had been instrumental in its development. It tries to determine how important the environment is to people and how decisions affecting planning are made. In particular it looks at the theories and assumptions behind environmental policy, suggests alternatives and describes the role played by ‘participation’ and pressure groups in influencing planning in Britain at the time.

Book Conservation and Recreation in Protected Areas

Download or read book Conservation and Recreation in Protected Areas written by Yun Ma and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-12 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive and up to date comparative study of the management and resolution of conflicts between conservation and recreation in protected areas in the US and China. Competing claims on the use of nature, increasing regulation of land use and recreational activities, and the conflicting goals between conservation and development have led to a rise in conflicts in the designation and management of protected areas. How to effectively manage and resolve these conflicts has become a challenge for both legislators and managers. By adopting an institutional dimension in legal interpretation, this book critically examines how such conflicts are dealt with in the legal regimes of the US and China while exploring interactions between legislatures, agencies and courts. The book searches for a plausible solution to improve the legal framework of protected areas in China by emulating pertinent mechanisms developed in the US, whilst also presenting legal and policy recommendations to the US. This informative book will be useful for legal scholars in Chinese law, nature conservation law, administrative law and comparative law.

Book Spatial Planning Systems and Practices in Europe

Download or read book Spatial Planning Systems and Practices in Europe written by Mario Reimer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-02-05 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ideal for students and practitioners working in spatial planning, the Europeanization of planning agendas and regional policy in general Spatial Planning Systems and Practices in Europe develops a systematic methodological framework to analyze changes in planning systems throughout Europe. The main aim of the book is to delineate the coexistence of continuity and change and of convergence and divergence with regard to planning practices across Europe. Based on the work of experts on spatial planning from twelve European countries the authors underline the specific and context-dependent variety and disparateness of planning transformation, focusing on the main objectives of the changes, the driving forces behind them and the main phases and turning points, the main agenda setting actors, and the different planning modes and tools reflected in the different "policy and planning styles". Along with a methodological framework the book includes twelve country case studies and the comparative conclusions covering a variety of planning systems of EU member states. According to the four "ideal types" of planning systems identified in the EU Compendium, at least two countries have been selected from each of the four different planning traditions: regional-economic (France, Germany), Urbanism (Greece, Italy), comprehensive/integrated (Denmark ,Finland, Netherlands, Germany), "land use planning" (UK, Czech Republic, Belgium/Flanders), along with two additional case studies focusing on the recent developments in eastern European countries by looking at Poland and in southern Europe looking at Turkey.
