Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an intriguing and inspiring collection of devotionals based on messages gleaned from signs along the roads we travel. It can be meaningful to adults, fascinating to children, and even helpful to youth learning to drive. Each message is supported by words of wisdom from the ancient Book of Proverbs. If we will just slow down and observe, even something as seemingly mundane as a road sign can convey a powerful lesson. "Mr. Brown, in the future, I would appreciate it if you would pay attention to them (road signs) and act accordingly." As he handed me the ticket, he said, 'Have a good day.'" -North Carolina State Trooper "My goodness, Bernie, this is amazing. Never thought of this ... but it is simple and profound. We can see road signs differently after reading your devotionals. The pictures are wonderful, too ... and Proverbs come alive in a new way." -Lucy Adams, Author and Cofounder of the Western NC Christian Writers Fellowship "Our city, like others, devotes a tremendous amount of resources toward placing directional and informational signs along its streets for guidance and to insure the public's safety. It is amazing how Bernie Brown has extracted additional meaning from many of these road signs to assist each of us on our individual life's journey. This fascinating little book will not only inspire you but will assist you in passing your 'spiritual driver's license' test." -Steve "Thunder" Tumlin, Jr., Mayor, city of Marietta, GA (Bernie's home since 1971; he was named Marietta Citizen of the Year in 1990)

Book excerpt: Winner of the International Latino Book Award “An incredibly heartfelt depiction of immigrants and refugees in a land full of uncertainty.” —Kirkus Reviews “Insightful, realistic picture...especially important reading for today’s children.” —Booklist “Fans of The Only Road will appreciate...while teachers and librarians may find the text useful to counter unsubstantiated myths about Central Americans fleeing to the US.” —School Library Journal Jaime and Ángela discover what it means to be living as undocumented immigrants in the United States in this timely sequel to the Pura Belpré Honor Book The Only Road. After crossing Mexico into the United States, Jaime Rivera thinks the worst is over. Starting a new school can’t be that bad. Except it is, and not just because he can barely speak English. While his cousin Ángela fits in quickly, with new friends and after-school activities, Jaime struggles with even the idea of calling this strange place “home.” His real home is with his parents, abuela, and the rest of the family; not here where cacti and cattle outnumber people, where he can no longer be himself—a boy from Guatemala. When bad news arrives from his parents back home, feelings of helplessness and guilt gnaw at Jaime. Gang violence in Guatemala means he can’t return home, but he’s not sure if he wants to stay either. The US is not the great place everyone said it would be, especially if you’re sin papeles—undocumented—like Jaime. When things look bleak, hope arrives from unexpected places: a quiet boy on the bus, a music teacher, an old ranch hand. With his sketchbook always close by, Jaime uses his drawings to show what it means to be a true citizen. Powerful and moving, this touching sequel to The Only Road explores overcoming homesickness, finding ways to connect despite a language barrier, and discovering what it means to start over in a new place that alternates between being wonderful and completely unwelcoming.

Book The Journey in Between

Download or read book The Journey in Between written by Keith Foskett and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2012-10-31 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sometimes, the best adventures happen by chance. El Camino de Santiago, also known as The Way, is the fabled path that weaves through French and Spanish countryside to its hallowed destination at Santiago de Compostella. Thousands attempt to hike its entirety each year: some succeed, many fail. One man struggling at a crossroads in life meets a stranger in a Greek bar who points him in the right direction. A week later, he finds himself starting El Camino, a 1000-mile hike that will change him. From the pain of blisters and extremes of temperature to encountering kleptomaniacs, fake faith healers and being threatened with arrest in Spain for 'not sleeping', his hike was far from normal. This is the story of one man's walk, but it speaks to all who see life itself as a journey and are alive to the revelations that an escape to nature can bring. Written with insight, observation and a healthy dose of humour. As this book shows, it is rarely the start and the finish that count, but the journey in between. Reviews 'A thoroughly entertaining modern take on a well-worn Spanish Trail.' - Spencer Vignes (The Observer). 'Not only does he have astute observations about the people, places and scenery around him, he is adept at translating those observations into words, often making me laugh or nod in understanding. This is a rare talent. Few authors can bring you to this level of understanding of life on the trail.' - Teresa Dicentra Black (Author - 'One Pan Wonders') 'An engaging, vivid and very personal account by a likeable author of a journey and an achievement that readers will find both enviable and inspiring.' - Ingrid Cranfield (Author - 'At Last Michael Reeves')

Download or read book The Journey Home to Abba written by Camella Rose Mac Donald and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2015-07-23 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This devotion by Charles H. Spurgeon sums up the inspirational and poetic journey that brought me home to Abba Father. "He led them forth by the right way." ?Psalm 107:7 Changeful experience often leads the anxious believer to enquire "Why is it thus with me?" I looked for light, but lo, darkness came; for peace, but behold trouble. I said in my heart, my mountain standeth firm, I shall never be moved. Lord, thou dost hide Thy face, and I am troubled. It was but yesterday that I could read my title clear; to-day my evidences are bedimmed, and my hopes are clouded. Yesterday I could climb to Pisgah's top, and view the landscape o'er, and rejoice with confidence in my future inheritance; to-day, my spirit has no hopes, but many fears; no joys, but much distress. Is this part of God's plan with me? Can this be the way in which God would bring me to heaven? Yes, it is even so. The eclipse of your faith, the darkness of your mind, the fainting of your hope, all these things are but parts of God's method of making you ripe for the great inheritance upon which you shall soon enter. These trials are for the testing and strengthening of your faith-they are waves that wash you further upon the rock-they are winds which waft your ship the more swiftly towards the desired haven. According to David's words, so it might be said of you, "so He bringeth them to their desired haven." By honour and dishonour, by evil report and by good report, by plenty and by poverty, by joy and by distress, by persecution and by peace, by all these things is the life of your souls maintained, and by each of these are you helped on your way. Oh, think not, believer, that your sorrows are out of God's plan; they are necessary parts of it. "We must, through much tribulation, enter the kingdom." Learn, then, even to "count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations." "O let my trembling soul be still, And wait Thy wise, Thy holy will! I cannot, Lord, Thy purpose see, Yet all is well since ruled by Thee."
