Book excerpt: The Adventures Of Rhonnie The Cross-eyed Rhino (And Friends) Is a series of seven short stories for young children of ages from very early learners to age 7 – 9 years. It would also be found entertaining and informative to some older children and adults alike. The lead or main character, Rhonnie, is a young Rhinoceros who is born with eyes that are crossed and from an early age he decides that he's going to find a way to have his eyes straightened so that he will not appear different to his mother, his siblings and other rhinos. As he travels around, he discovers that life can be much harder for others and he learns to understand and accept this. Sometimes his efforts to get them straightened gets him into some scrapes and funny situations. Eventually he arrives at the conclusion that it isn't so important and accepts his disability as just an annoyance and sets out his ambition to adjust to it and to become the best rhino he can possibly be. As he is growing up he makes many new friends and acquaintances. He is determined to have the best time he can and sets out on adventure after adventure with his friends. Nothing fazes him in his explorations and search for fun. All stories were written entirely by Peter Davies whilst looking for a productive hobby during the lock-down period caused by the COVID19 pandemic. Each story contains life lessons for the younger reader, also morals to adopt in developing life skills. He learns the importance of sharing. It deals with diversity issues and also natural systems including environmental and social harmony.

Book excerpt: Presenting the life and professional career of The Dean of Afro-American Composers, this is the first comprehensive book on the writings by and about Still, the compositions with manuscript sources, the performances of Still's works, and the reviews of those performances. It includes a touching personal reminiscence by his daughter Judith Anne. The full resources of the extensive collection known as The William Grant Still and Verna Arvey Papers at the University of Arkansas Libraries, Fayetteville, give this book the distinction of being the first one about Still that utilizes diaries, letters, scrapbooks, and family papers to provide information on his works and performances. Still performed, composed, and arranged in the commercial music field before he began to write orchestral works and opera. He is called the Dean of Afro-American Composers because of his pioneering efforts on behalf of American music and his achievements as an African American. Still was the first African American to write a symphony that was performed by a major symphony orchestra in the United States, the first to conduct a major symphony orchestra, the first to conduct a major symphony in the Deep South, the first to direct a white radio orchestra, the first to have an opera produced by a major company, and the first to have an opera televised over a national network. His career tells an important story about the development of an American style of music.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1970s, Dr. Alan Scott sought to selectively weaken eye muscles to treat strabismus (when one or both eyes are misaligned) without surgery. After failed attempts with other agents, Scott developed a method to stabilize the bacteria that causes botulism, culminating in a drug that eventually became known as Botox. In Death to Beauty, Eugene M. Helveston, MD, follows the unlikely story of botulism's 1817 discovery in contaminated German sausages, to its use in military and research facilities, to Scott, an ophthalmologist who aimed to safely use the drug in humans. Scott struggled alone as an unknown in the pharmaceutical industry, searching for clinical trial financing and FDA approval, which he achieved at a fraction of the billions big pharma usually spends to bring a drug to market. Eventually, the company Allergan bought him out, capitalizing on the possibilities for cosmetic uses. Scott's formula was renamed "Botox" and reached annual sales in the billions. After the sale, Scott received no further compensation from Botox sales and remained the same unassuming man. A fascinating walk through the intricate history of how the world's deadliest toxin starting as a treatment for crossed eyes became a routine tool for the cosmetic industry, Death to Beauty will make you rethink success, beauty, and deadly bacteria.
