Book Cross Currents in Israeli Culture and Politics

Download or read book Cross Currents in Israeli Culture and Politics written by Myron Joel Aronoff and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on 1984-01-01 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fourth volume of Political Anthropology is the first in the series to be devoted entirely to a single country. Israel is currently undergoing a critical stage of transition in its development. The election of the first Likud government in 1977 ended fifty years of Labor dominance of the political system. It in-troduced new personalities, policies, symbols, and myths as it attempted to establish the legitimacy of the new regime. The 1981 election, which maintained the Likud rule, was the closest and one of the most violent in Israeli history; and one in which political and ethnic tensions reached an unprecedented peak. The election in 1984 will determine considerably more than just which part will rule the country. The very character of the nation is at stake. In this volume the most timely and pressing problems confronting Israeli society are analyzed by leading Israeli and American experts, utilizing the unique interdisciplinary focus of political anthropology. Aronoff analyzes the resurgence of political polarization after almost two decades of relative politi-cal quietude. Lewis astutely explains the role of ethnicity in Israeli politics and how it relates to foreign policy of the Likud government. Shokeid critically analyzes a case study exemplifying collective redefinition of status. Weissbrod sees the war in Lebanon as particularly noteworthy, because it was the first time that a significant part of the Israeli public questioned the justice of an Israeli war, especially during the initial victorious stages. Weisburd and Vinitzky demonstrate that the settlers of Gush Emunim have developed a "rational" ideological legitimization for their vigilante activities against the Arabs in the territories. Dominguez analyzes the meanings of "left" and "right" as multivocal and multifunctional terms in Israeli politics. This volume is the one book that will give you insight into and understanding of the most pressing problems facing Israeli society.

Book Cross Currents of Social Theorizing of Contemporary Taiwan

Download or read book Cross Currents of Social Theorizing of Contemporary Taiwan written by Ananta Kumar Giri and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-08-22 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents aspects of cross-currents of theorizing of self, culture and society in the contemporary Taiwan. Social theorizing has been addressed critically, reflectively and creatively by the philosophical, religious, psychological and literary traditions of one of the world’s great civilizations Theorizing is a dynamic movement of self, culture, society and the world as it is related to our actions, reflections, meditations to understand the world more meaningfully and holistically as well as to transform it. But much of social theorizing in the modern world is primarily Euro-American and despite the socalled globalization of knowledge, this condition of one-sided Euro-American valorization of knowledge and neglect of others continues unabated. There is very little attention to theorizing about the human condition emerging from other parts of the world such as Taiwan and its global implication. This book transforms this condition by mapping the field of theorizing in a wider spectrum of philosophy, psychology, religions, social sciences and humanities in contemporary Taiwan.

Book Crosscurrents and Crosscutting Themes

Download or read book Crosscurrents and Crosscutting Themes written by Kagendo Mutua and published by IAP. This book was released on 2006-08-01 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this Third Volume of the series, Research on Education in Africa, the Caribbean and the Middle East, the volume continues with the previously established overarching purpose of publishing chapters that are based upon research conducted in those regions by scholars, many of whom are indigenous to the regions they write about and are, therefore, able to provide cultural insights about relevant issues, as well as nonindigenous scholars who have conducted their studies in countries within the regions or about those regions. This mixture of indigenous scholarship offering emic perspectives and outside scholarship offering etic perspectives continues to be a relative strength and uniqueness of this book series. In addition, several chapters in the current volume constitute collaborations between the authors etic and emic to the contexts about which they write. This bifocality in the gaze cast upon issues covered in this book series has been well received by readers of earlier volumes of the series.

Book Cross Currents

    Book Details:
  • Author : Cindy Scheopner
  • Publisher : Cambridge Scholars Publishing
  • Release : 2014-07-24
  • ISBN : 1443864692
  • Pages : 195 pages

Download or read book Cross Currents written by Cindy Scheopner and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-07-24 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philosophy begins with a question. The same question is often asked in different languages. Comparative philosophy is a project that engages thinkers from all areas of the world and approaches common problems from different perspectives. The conversations look at not only interactions between cultures, but also the relationships among humans, animals, and nature. But the many languages and unfamiliar terms can seem intimidating even to those with formal philosophical training. This book provides an approachable survey of current topics from some of the newest comparative philosophers as they enter the field. Arising out of a graduate student philosophy conference at the University of Hawai‘i, these selected papers were revised to respond to the suggestions and challenges presented during the conference. For this volume, foreign terms are translated, and introductions and editors’ notes give context to the individual chapters. Ignoring the traditional divisions of academic philosophy, this anthology focuses rather on the common search for answers by bringing thinkers from what are labeled “eastern” and “western” philosophy into conversation with one another as members of the global community.
