Book excerpt: This book deals with the theory and experiment of the elementary process of bremsstrahlung, where photons are detected in coincidence with decelerated outgoing electrons. Such experiments allow for a more stringent check of the theoretical work. The main emphasis is laid on electron-atom bremsstrahlung and electron-electron bremsstrahlung, but further bremsstrahlung processes are also dealt with. In the theoretical parts, triply differential cross sections are derived in various approximations, including electron spin and photon-polarization. In the experimental sections, electron-photon coincidence experiments are discussed. These are done partly with transversely polarized electron beams and partly with detectors for the bremsstrahlung linear polarization.

Book excerpt: The low energy cross sections for neutral Bremsstrahlung for the major species of high temperature Air-O, N, and N2 have been measured. The experiments were performed behind reflected shocks by measuring the absolute, infrared intensity of appropriate shock heated gas mixtures. The radiation was detected with a rapid scanning infrared spectrometer covering a total spectral range of 2.0 - 5.4 microns. The data were analyzed by assuming that the observed continuum was due to free-free scattering of electrons from the neutral species in the gas studied. The neutral Bremsstrahlung cross section was determined for (1) atomic oxygen in O2-Ne mixtures, (2) atomic nitrogen in N2-Ne mixtures, and (3) for molecular nitrogen from data on pure N2. Further checks on the experimental values were obtained by comparing the measured cross sections against intensity data from air and N2-Ar and N2-Ne mixtures. The data were analyzed for the 'effective nuclear charge squared' and radiation absorption cross section of the active species. The data are compared with previous experimental measurements and with theoretical calculations. (Author).

The data have been analyzed to obtain the effective nuclear charge squared (Z sub i) squared, of the species i, doing the scattering using a modified form of the Kramers-Unsold equation, and to obtain the radiative absorption cross section Qa sub i. Experimental information on the temperature and wavelength dependence of the neutral Bremsstrahlung has been determined. The experimental Qa's have been compared with calculations based on a simple theory of radiative scattering of electrons from neutral species. (Author).
