Book excerpt: During the latter half of the nineteenth century, a number of social philosophers' gained pre-eminence throughout North America and Europe for their writings and speeches, Henry George being one of the best known; often referred to as progressivists', they sought to expose the established and growing socio-economic iniquities that were the result of swift industrialisatio, and called for a new political ecomony and social order. This book, the first in a trilogy, examines the basics of Henry George's political and social philosophy. Through careful and exhaustive research into George's original works (including Progress and Poverty, Our Land and Land Policy and articles in the Standard), the editor has compiled in one volume the essentials required for a clear and comprehensive understanding of Henry George's thinking. Book excerpt: “An American Anarchist closes a major gap in our understanding of American an- archism and particularly a gap in our understanding of its deep roots in American radicalism. It makes the same contribution to our understanding of American feminism.” —Richard Drinnon, author of Rebel in Paradise: A Biography of Emma Goldman "Paul Avrich's book is very well researched—it fascinated me as I am sure it will fascinate many other people who are interested in the anarchist personality." —George Woodcock An American Anarchist marked the trail historians of American anarchism are still following today: above all else, to understand anarchists as human beings. Narrative-driven like all of Paul Avrich’s works, this story highlights famous characters like Emma Goldman and Alexander Berkman and the infamous, like Dyer D. Lum—Voltairine de Cleyre’s lover and the man who sneaked a dynamite cartridge into Louis Lingg’s cell so the accused Haymarket Martyr could die at his own hand and not the state’s. De Cleyre (1866–1912), born in Michigan, is noted as the first prominent American-born anarchist. From her voluminous writings and speeches, the illnesses that plagued her, the shooting on a streetcar in Philadelphia that left de Cleyre clinging for life, to her eventual death at forty- five in Chicago, she worked tirelessly for her ideal.

Book Martyrs of the Early American Left

Download or read book Martyrs of the Early American Left written by Robert C. Cottrell and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2023-04-12 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intertwining the stories of three leading early twentieth century radical Americans, this book presents the enthralling tale of the too-short lives of Inez Milholland, Randolph Bourne, and John Reed. It highlights the movements and personal experiences that drew such privileged individuals to the American left, willing to sacrifice comfortable circumstances and opportunities. As writers and activists, the trio became leading spokespersons for feminism, sexual liberation, unions, civil liberties, pacifism, internationalism, socialism, anarchism, and, in Reed's case, communism. Challenging capitalism, patriarchy, and the nation-state, the independently-minded Milholland, Bourne, and Reed possessed a twofold commitment to personal liberation and community. With their early deaths, they left behind personal models for acting, living, and thinking afresh. One could say they became martyrs to the very movements they championed.

Book The Prophetic Tradition and Radical Rhetoric in America

Download or read book The Prophetic Tradition and Radical Rhetoric in America written by James Darsey and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 1999-09-01 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This expansive volume traces the rhetoric of reform across American history, examining such pivotal periods as the American Revolution, slavery, McCarthyism, and today's gay liberation movement. At a time when social movements led by religious leaders, from Louis Farrakhan to Pat Buchanan, are playing a central role in American politics, James Darsey connects this radical tradition with its prophetic roots. Public discourse in the West is derived from the Greek principles of civility, diplomacy, compromise, and negotiation. On this model, radical speech is often taken to be a sympton of social disorder. Not so, contends Darsey, who argues that the rhetoric of reform in America represents the continuation of a tradition separate from the commonly accepted principles of the Greeks. Though the links have gone unrecognized, the American radical tradition stems not from Aristotle, he maintains, but from the prophets of the Hebrew Bible.
