Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This introduction to some basic ideas in algebraic topology is devoted to the foundations and applications of homology theory. After the essentials of singular homology and some important applications are given, successive topics covered include attaching spaces, finite CW complexes, cohomology products, manifolds, Poincare duality, and fixed point theory. This second edition includes a chapter on covering spaces and many new exercises.
Download or read book Mathematics Related to Physics written by Raoul Bott and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1994-12-19 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Collected Papers of Raoul Bott are contained in five volumes, with each volume covering a different subject and each representing approximately a decade of Bott's work. The volumes are: Volume 1: Topology and Lie Groups (1950's) Volume 2: Differential Operators (1960's) Volume 3: Foliations (1970's) Volume 4: Mathematics Related to Physics (1980's) Volume 5: Completive Articles and Additional Biographic Material (1990's) Most of the papers in this volume deal with two physical-inspired themes: the Yang-Mills equations and the rigidity phenomena of vector bundles. It also contains Bott's own commentaries on a few of the papers, as well as a tribute by Clifford Taubes.

Download or read book Differential Topology written by Victor Guillemin and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2010 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Differential Topology provides an elementary and intuitive introduction to the study of smooth manifolds. In the years since its first publication, Guillemin and Pollack's book has become a standard text on the subject. It is a jewel of mathematical exposition, judiciously picking exactly the right mixture of detail and generality to display the richness within. The text is mostly self-contained, requiring only undergraduate analysis and linear algebra. By relying on a unifying idea--transversality--the authors are able to avoid the use of big machinery or ad hoc techniques to establish the main results. In this way, they present intelligent treatments of important theorems, such as the Lefschetz fixed-point theorem, the Poincaré-Hopf index theorem, and Stokes theorem. The book has a wealth of exercises of various types. Some are routine explorations of the main material. In others, the students are guided step-by-step through proofs of fundamental results, such as the Jordan-Brouwer separation theorem. An exercise section in Chapter 4 leads the student through a construction of de Rham cohomology and a proof of its homotopy invariance. The book is suitable for either an introductory graduate course or an advanced undergraduate course.

Download or read book Topological Methods in Differential Equations and Inclusions written by Andrzej Granas and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 531 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers collected in this volume are contributions to the 33rd session of the Seminaire de Mathematiques Superieures (SMS) on "Topological Methods in Differential Equations and Inclusions". This session of the SMS took place at the Universite de Montreal in July 1994 and was a NATO Advanced Study Institute (ASI). The aim of the ASI was to bring together a considerable group of young researchers from various parts of the world and to present to them coherent surveys of some of the most recent advances in this area of Nonlinear Analysis. During the meeting 89 mathematicians from 20 countries have had the opportunity to get acquainted with various aspects of the subjects treated in the lectures as well as the chance to exchange ideas and learn about new problems arising in the field. The main topics teated in this ASI were the following: Fixed point theory for single- and multi-valued mappings including topological degree and its generalizations, and topological transversality theory; existence and multiplicity results for ordinary differential equations and inclusions; bifurcation and stability problems; ordinary differential equations in Banach spaces; second order differential equations on manifolds; the topological structure of the solution set of differential inclusions; effects of delay perturbations on dynamics of retarded delay differential equations; dynamics of reaction diffusion equations; non smooth critical point theory and applications to boundary value problems for quasilinear elliptic equations.
Download or read book Critical Point Theory written by Martin Schechter and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-05-30 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph collects cutting-edge results and techniques for solving nonlinear partial differential equations using critical points. Including many of the author’s own contributions, a range of proofs are conveniently collected here, Because the material is approached with rigor, this book will serve as an invaluable resource for exploring recent developments in this active area of research, as well as the numerous ways in which critical point theory can be applied. Different methods for finding critical points are presented in the first six chapters. The specific situations in which these methods are applicable is explained in detail. Focus then shifts toward the book’s main subject: applications to problems in mathematics and physics. These include topics such as Schrödinger equations, Hamiltonian systems, elliptic systems, nonlinear wave equations, nonlinear optics, semilinear PDEs, boundary value problems, and equations with multiple solutions. Readers will find this collection of applications convenient and thorough, with detailed proofs appearing throughout. Critical Point Theory will be ideal for graduate students and researchers interested in solving differential equations, and for those studying variational methods. An understanding of fundamental mathematical analysis is assumed. In particular, the basic properties of Hilbert and Banach spaces are used.

Download or read book Topological Data Structures for Surfaces written by Sanjay Rana and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2005-12-13 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Geography and GIS, surfaces can be analysed and visualised through various data structures, and topological data structures describe surfaces in the form of a relationship between certain surface-specific features. Drawn from many disciplines with a strong applied aspect, this is a research-led, interdisciplinary approach to the creation, analysis and visualisation of surfaces, focussing on topological data structures. Topological Data Structures for Surfaces: an introduction for Geographical Information Science describes the concepts and applications of these data structures. The book focuses on how these data structures can be used to analyse and visualise surface datasets from a range of disciplines such as human geography, computer graphics, metrology, and physical geography. Divided into two Parts, Part I defines the topological surface data structures and explains the various automated methods used for their generation. Part II demonstrates a number of applications of surface networks in diverse fields, ranging from sub-atomic particle collision visualisation to the study of population density patterns. To ensure that the material is accessible, each Part is prefaced by an overview of the techniques and application. Provides GI scientists and geographers with an accessible overview of current surface topology research. Algorithms are presented and explained with practical examples of their usage. Features an accompanying website developed by the Editor - http://geog.le.ac.uk/sanjayrana/surface-networks/ This book is invaluable for researchers and postgraduate students working in departments of GI Science, Geography and Computer Science. It also constitutes key reference material for Masters students working on surface analysis projects as part of a GI Science or Computer Science programme.

Book excerpt: This self-contained monograph presents methods for the investigation of nonlinear variational problems. These methods are based on geometric and topological ideas such as topological index, degree of a mapping, Morse-Conley index, Euler characteristics, deformation invariant, homotopic invariant, and the Lusternik-Shnirelman category. Attention is also given to applications in optimisation, mathematical physics, control, and numerical methods. Audience: This volume will be of interest to specialists in functional analysis and its applications, and can also be recommended as a text for graduate and postgraduate-level courses in these fields.
