Book excerpt: This volume contains the invited lectures and seminars and abstracts of the contributed seminars presented at the NATO Advanced Study Institute on Photon Correlation and Light Beating Spectroscopy held at the Centro Caprense Di Vita E Di Studi Ignazio Cerio, Capri, Italy, July 16-27, 1973. The Institute was organized to provide a com~rehen8ive presentation of this new and rapidly developing field for those interested in applying these techniques to problems in many areas including Physics, Biology, Engineering and Chemistry. The lectures were divided into three principal categories: the first Basic Theory (Photon Statistics and Correlation, Scattering Theory), secondly Instrumentation (Correlation Techniques, Light Beating), and the third Areas of Application (Gas and Liquid Dynamics, Critical Phenomena, Biology). The seminars provided detailed presentations of applications to a number of specific problems. - Although the selection of topics was inevitably li mi ted, i t was the hope of the organizing committee that the lectures would provide a broad coverage appropriate for the needs of the interdisciplinary audience represented by the participants, and that this volume would serve for some years to come as a useful introduction for those entering the field. It includes a section on the assumptions leading to the specific mathematical formalism of quantum theory and a section entitled "The evolutionary picture" describing my personal conclusions. Book excerpt: Topological geometrodynamics (TGD) is a modification of the theory of general relativity inspired by the problems related to the definition of inertial and gravitational energies in the earlier hypotheses. TGD is also a generalization of super string models. TGD brings forth an elegant theoretical projection of reality and builds upon the work by renowned scientists (Wheeler, Feynman, Penrose, Einstein, Josephson to name a few). In TGD, Physical space-time planes are visualized as four-dimensional surfaces in a certain 8-dimensional space (H). The choice of H is fixed by symmetries of standard model and leads to a geometric mapping of known classical fields and elementary particle numbers. TGD differs from Einstein’s geometrodynamics in the way space-time planes or ‘sheets’ are lumped together. Extending the theory based on fusing number concepts implies a further generalisation of the space-time concept allowing the identification of space-time correlates of cognition and intentionality. Additionally, zero energy ontology forces an extension of quantum measurement theory to a theory of consciousness and a hierarchy of phases is identified. Dark matter is thus predicted with far reaching implications for the understanding of consciousness and living systems. Therefore, it sets a solid foundation for modeling our universe in geometric terms. Topological Geometrodynamics: An Overview explains basic and advanced concepts about TGD. The book covers introductory information and classical TGD concepts before delving into twistor-space theory, particle physics, infinite-dimensional spinor geometry, generalized number theory, Planck constants, and the applications of TGD theory in research. Book excerpt: Recent arguments concerning the nature of causation in evolutionary theory, now often known as the debate between the 'causalist' and 'statisticalist' positions, have involved answers to a variety of independent questions – definitions of key evolutionary concepts like natural selection, fitness, and genetic drift; causation in multi-level systems; or the nature of evolutionary explanations, among others. This Element offers a way to disentangle one set of these questions surrounding the causal structure of natural selection. Doing so allows us to clearly reconstruct the approach that some of these major competing interpretations of evolutionary theory have to this causal structure, highlighting particular features of philosophical interest within each. Further, those features concern problems not exclusive to the philosophy of biology. Connections between them and, in two case studies, contemporary metaphysics and philosophy of physics demonstrate the potential value of broader collaboration in the understanding of evolution.
