Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the ultimate destination? Is it a place, a state of mind, or a vision of how we would like things to be? Slick airline adverts tell us it's the journey, not the destination, that matters--but the selfie generation is all about capturing, filtering and digitally preserving the destination, in all its Instagrammable glory. How has 'the destination' evolved in our rapidly changing times? Whether it is a physical reality that we yearn for, a spiritual reckoning or an introspective quest to find one's self, this issue of Critical Muslim explores what it means to want to get there, and maybe even how our original goals--even the destination--may change, wherever or whenever they may be. About Critical Muslim: A quarterly publication of ideas and issues showcasing groundbreaking thinking on Islam and what it means to be a Muslim in a rapidly changing, interconnected world. Each edition centers on a discrete theme, and contributions include reportage, academic analysis, cultural commentary, photography, poetry, and book reviews.

Book Critical Inclusive Tourism

Download or read book Critical Inclusive Tourism written by Catheryn Khoo and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-09-06 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking book addresses the longstanding lack of consensus surrounding the approach to marginalization in tourism. The chapters identify critical components and question the legitimacy of who qualifies as marginalized. Crucially, the book formulates effective solutions to address marginalization within the tourism context. While previous studies in tourism and social sciences have presented diverse conceptualizations and explanations of marginalization, the chapters in this book meticulously scrutinize their contextualization in constructing structural marginalization within the tourism industry. By doing so the book offers a comprehensive understanding of how marginalisation manifests in the complex dynamics within the tourism sector. The chapters unravel the multifaceted dimensions of marginalization, providing a nuanced and informed perspective that contributes significantly to the ongoing discourse on inclusivity and equity within tourism knowledge. This book will be useful to tourism practitioners, academics, students, researchers and policymakers. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of Tourism Recreation Research.

Book Critical Perspectives on Equity and Social Mobility in Study Abroad

Download or read book Critical Perspectives on Equity and Social Mobility in Study Abroad written by Chris Glass and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2021-07-22 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume brings together the perspectives of a diverse group of international scholars to explore the intersections of study abroad and social mobility. In doing so, it challenges universalist assumptions and power imbalances implicit in study abroad across the Global North and South, and explores the implications of COVID-19 for equity within study abroad programs, policy, and practice going forward. Offering empirical, theoretical, and conceptual contributions, Critical Perspectives on Equity and Social Mobility in Study Abroad foregrounds critical reflection on the stratification of access to study abroad and examines the varied outcomes of international study in relation to graduates’ entry into domestic and international labor markets. Focusing on the experiences and outcomes of students from varied backgrounds, chapters identify a number of power imbalances relating to student race, ethnicity, religion, local and international policies and politics, and put forward valuable recommendations to ensure greater equity within the field. Against the backdrop of growing criticism over the power imbalances in international exchange, this text will benefit researchers, academics, and educators with an interest in higher education, international and comparative education, and multicultural education. Those interested in educational policy and the sociology of education more broadly will also benefit from this book.

Book excerpt: An authentic, unique and memorable destination image is of crucial importance to be competitive in the long-term. First of all, a detailed theoretical overview referring to various image types, the current image transfer including critical topics related to the religion of Islam, women’s role in society, behaviour, body language and dress code and the open-mindedness of the United Arab Emirates regarding local traditions related to the religion of Islam, is given. In the empirical part, a mixed method, including a qualitative media analysis (focusing on print and new media of image developers as well as newspaper articles published by journalists in the United Arab Emirates and the surrounding countries) and qualitative expert interviews are selected as appropriate research methodology.

Book Comprehensive Approach as Sine Qua Non for Critical Infrastructure Protection

Download or read book Comprehensive Approach as Sine Qua Non for Critical Infrastructure Protection written by D. Čaleta and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2014-12-16 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world in which we live is becoming ever more complex, both from the viewpoint of ensuring security, and also because of our level of dependence on technology, as represented by so-called critical infrastructure. Despite the efforts of national security entities in the national and international context, terrorist attacks will probably never be completely preventable. This makes it necessary to prepare the functioning of our systems for the occurrence of a terrorist attack so that they will operate quickly and effectively even in this type of crisis. This book presents the papers delivered at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop: Managing Terrorism Threats to Critical Infrastructure – Challenges for South Eastern Europe, held in Belgrade, Serbia in May 2014. The book is divided into five sections: strategic environment and critical infrastructure protection; information security and counterterrorism considerations; terrorist threats to critical infrastructure operation – environmental aspects; energy security as a key factor of critical infrastructure protection; and national approaches to critical infrastructure protection. The book highlights the main dilemmas and challenges of managing terrorist threats in the region of South Eastern Europe, and will be of interest to all those whose work involves protecting critical infrastructure from the threat of terrorist attack.

Book Mind the Backlash Gender Discrimination and Sexism in Contemporary Societies

Download or read book Mind the Backlash Gender Discrimination and Sexism in Contemporary Societies written by Hilde Coffe and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2023-09-26 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decades of campaigns and policy efforts have brought significant progress in women's economic and political status and pushed gender equality up the global policy agenda. The goal of gender equality, however, still remains largely out of reach, as illustrated by the recent wave of women's protests against sexual harassment, assault and gender violence (e.g. #MeToo movement). Some European countries (e.g. Poland, Hungary and Lithuania) have even seen their performance on gender equality backslide in recent years, and in parallel to calls for increased equality, a wave of mobilisation against gender equality has appeared in the public discourse. Conservative, authoritarian and populist voices in many democracies are now contesting the equal participation of men and women in society under the auspices of a "war on gender ideology." This backlash against women's empowerment carries considerable implications for anti-discrimination laws, policies protecting women against domestic violence, reproductive health and the establishment of gender quotas. Given the "backlash" against gender observed in various countries around the globe, we argue that now is a critical time to revisit and broaden our knowledge about gender discrimination, gender equality and sexism. Our proposed Research Topic will provide a gender perspective to illustrate and understand the recent illiberal turn in politics in a variety of contexts. Taking a comparative approach, we aim at improving our understanding of how sexism, discrimination and gender equality operate at the societal level, and how they shape broader social and political views. At the individual level, we will study the current, seemingly opposing forces—for and against gender equality— by analysing the antecedents, predispositions, experiences and motivations explaining and underpinning these attitudes towards different ways of gender equality (sexism and discrimination).

Book Among the Believers

    Book Details:
  • Author : V. S. Naipaul
  • Publisher : Vintage
  • Release : 2011-03-23
  • ISBN : 0307789306
  • Pages : 595 pages

Download or read book Among the Believers written by V. S. Naipaul and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2011-03-23 with total page 595 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Nobel Prize-winning author gives us – on the basis of his own intensive seventeen month journey across the Asian continent – an unprecedented revelation of the Islamic world. • “A brilliant report…. A book of scathing inquiry and judgment, whose tragic power is being continually reinforced by current events” (Newsweek). With all the narrative power and intellectual authority that have distinguished his earlier books and won him international acclaim (“There can hardly be a writer alive who surpasses him” – Irving Howe, The New York Times Book Review), Naipaul explores the life, the culture, the ferment inside the nations of Islam – in a book that combines the fascinations of the great works of travel literature with the insights of a uniquely sharp, original, and idiosyncratic political mind. He takes us into four countries in the throes of “Islamization” – countries that, in their ardor to build new societies based entirely on the fundamental laws of Islam, have violently rejected the “materialism” of the technologically advanced nations that have long supported them. He brings us close to the people of Islam – how they live and work, the role of faith in their lives, how they see their place in the modern world.

Book Places in Motion

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jacob N. Kinnard
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2014-06-20
  • ISBN : 0199359687
  • Pages : 305 pages

Download or read book Places in Motion written by Jacob N. Kinnard and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2014-06-20 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jacob Kinnard offers an in-depth examination of the complex dynamics of religiously charged places. Focusing on several important shared and contested pilgrimage places-Ground Zero and Devils Tower in the United States, Ayodhya and Bodhgaya in India, Karbala in Iraq-he poses a number of crucial questions. What and who has made these sites important, and why? How are they shared, and how and why are they contested? What is at stake in their contestation? How are the particular identities of place and space established? How are individual and collective identity intertwined with space and place? Challenging long-accepted, clean divisions of the religious world, Kinnard explores specific instances of the vibrant messiness of religious practice, the multivocality of religious objects, the fluid and hybrid dynamics of religious places, and the shifting and tangled identities of religious actors. He contends that sacred space is a constructed idea: places are not sacred in and of themselves, but are sacred because we make them sacred. As such, they are in perpetual motion, transforming themselves from moment to moment and generation to generation. Places in Motion moves comfortably across and between a variety of historical and cultural settings as well as academic disciplines, providing a deft and sensitive approach to the topic of sacred places, with awareness of political, economic, and social realities as these exist in relation to questions of identity. It is a lively and much needed critical advance in analytical reflections on sacred space and pilgrimage.
